AS I WAS READING A POST THE OTHER DAY BY RER ABOUT BROCKMAN AND HIS VARIOUS BUILDINGS AND RESIDENCE, HE MENTIONED ABOUT GARLAND BROOK CEMETERY AND THAT NANC'S FAMILY WAS CONNECTED TO THE LAND.
I COPIED A LITTLE FROM MY FAMILY TREE THAT I THOUGHT WAS INTERESTING
Notes for Nathan Greaves Graves: Nathan Greaves (3) was born 19 Jan. 1799 in NC, died 3 May 1873, and was buried about 1 mile southeast of Columbus, Bartholomew Co., IN. He first married Katherine Waters on 22 Jan. 1821 in Ohio. She was born 4 June 1804 and died 2 Sept. 1845. He secondly married Mary Elizabeth Soper in 1846 in Indiana. She was born in 1826 and died 12 Oct. 1850. He thirdly married Minerva Hobbs on 25 Feb. 1851 in Indiana. Nathan was an honest, upright man, and abhorred deception in his fellow man. He was well-known and respected by the community at large, and left a character that his descendants may well feel proud of. He 23 was a lifelong member of the M. E. Church, and died in his 75th year, the result of a paralytic stroke when yet in robust health. He owned a farm of 440 acres of first class land east of the town of Columbus, IN, which was later largely included in the city. Garland Brook Cem. is also on the farm land. (R-200) ii. Willliam M. Graves, born 23
112. Henry Lambert, born 05 Jan 1779 in Pennsylvania; died 07 Oct 1837 in Bartholomew County, Indiana. He was the son of 224. Nicholas Lambert and 225. Mary Magdalena Hill. He married 113. Elizabeth Reninger. 113. Elizabeth Reninger, born 29 Aug 1783 in Pennsylvania; died 17 Sep 1844 in Bartholomew County, Indiana. Notes for Henry Lambert: "Henry Lambert, first child of Nicholas Lambert and Mary Magdalena Hill, was born in 1779 in PA; died 1837 in Indiana. Henry first migrated to Ohio, and later to Bartholomew Co., IN where he farmed land northeast of Columbus, IN. Henry's farm became "Bakalar Air Base" during World War II. In one corner of his farm, Henry established "Lambert Cemetery". Henry, his wife Elizabeth Renninger (1783-1843), and Henry's mother Mary Magdalena Hill (1761-1843) are buried there, as well as many other Lamberts." Paraphrased excerpt from long family history in "Family Histories, Churches and Schools, Bartholomew Col., IN. Note: 1830 Montgomery Co., OH, census index, Henry
THIS EXCERPT MENTIONS NATHAN GREAVES AND HIS FARM AS BEING A PRT OF GARLAND BROOK SINCE THERE ARE SOME SMITH'S IN MY FAMILY WE MAY HOOK UP WITH NANC'S FAMILY
THE SECOND ITEM REFERS TO HENRY LAMBERT AND HIS FARM WAS WHERE THE BAKALAR AFB WAS BUILT.
INTERESTING SINCE A HIGH SCHOOL FRIEND JEFF CRUMP'S FAMILY ARE A PART OF THE ROCKY FORD FARM WHICH WAS PROBABLY A NEIGHBOR A WAYS BACK.
AMAZING WHAT THE GENEALOGY SEARCH CAN UNCOVER

Webber Smith, in my own head and what I know. So 'who knows?' Wonder IF? Nanc

I wonder if anyone remembers a Cheek family in Columbus? Albert and Leota Drake Cheek, with sons Donald, William Raymond and Clyde Harold? I am interested in Donald who married Greta Mae Rogers and possibly had daughters, Joy and Norma. Donald was an employee of Crump Theaters for 42 years. Thanks, Tina

I am looking for information about Sarah Rowdenbaugh McQuality, b. Abt 1798, Fairfield Co., OH, USA, d. Abt 1844, Columbus, Bartholomew Co., IN, USA, and her family. On 5 Nov 1816 at Fairfield Co., OH, USA Sarah married William McQuality. They had 11 children. At the current time I am researching Caroline McQuality, b. Abt 1835, West Jefferson, Madison Co., OH, USA, d. Abt 1912, Columbus, Bartholomew Co., IN, USA. She may be buried in Lambert Cemetery, Columbus, Bartholomew Co., IN, USA. On 17 Jun 1851 Caroline married Lorenzo Francis Bennett at Bartholomew Co. IN, USA. I believe they had four children. Frank Gordon Bennett, b. abt 1854, Wayne Twp., Bartholomew Co., IN, USA, Emma Bennett, b. Oct 1876, IN, and two children that died. I would like to verify the death of Caroline McQuality and where she is buried. Also, the birth and death of her children. Is it possible to get birth and death certificates? I would like to know who lived next to Burt Calvin (on his left) at 2327 Gilmore. I want the FORMER owners, who were Burt Calvin's neighbors at the time. On Burt Calvins right side, there was a Mr. Pancake ? I think who was the owner of the house. He had 3 buildings on his lot. 1 being his house, and one a garage and the other one perhaps a shed. That shed that looks out on the alley was used for something other than a shed. (I was told) Does anyone have pictures of homes in the area being built. I'd like to know more about the Calvin family. I was told they were the only ones who had a house on a double lot. Who were Burt Calvins wife and kids? please e-mail me at clcy@att.net

'Ya' just gotta LOVE these message boards!' Pose a question and there are people 'on board' that will do their best to 'figger' it out. Good job. AND we all learned something in the process, and puzzle pieces just continue to be put into place............
Happy New Year, one and all.

I'd like to find more background on George Cummins' father -- James Wesley Cummins. George was the owner of Cummins bookstore (see www.historiccolumbusindiana.org/gcummins.htm ). His father, James Wesley Cummins, was a carpenter who moved the family from Madison to Franklin and then to Columbus in the 1850s and 1860s. According to a Madison obituary of Vinton Matthews (another carpenter), [James] Wesley Cummins came to Mississippi and Arkansas in 1857 to build plantation houses, likely including the one I work at in 1858-1859-- the Lakeport Plantation in Arkansas. Lakeport.astate.edu Several other carpenters are mentioned in the obit, including one who can be placed, in an independent source, building a nearby house. www.mjcpl.org/historyrescue/records/obituaries-from-scrapbooks-1901-1908I located a short obit for James Cummins in the Madison Courier (February 10, 1881) which led me to Columbus and George's bookstore. If anyone is aware of any histories (unpublished or published) of the Cummins family or a local obit of James Wesley Cummins, I would greatly appreciate it. Blake

Welcome, bwintor!
I'm hoping that Rhonda Bolner sees this post. I'm also going to copy and paste your post in the Cummins Bookstore Thread!
I'll try to get down to the library week after next.

I'm in the library every week, working at the Columbus Indiana Architectrual Archives. I'll take a look at some microfilm while down there, and see if I can find an obit in the local paper. I'll post results here!

This is what I found in the microfilm today. Please note that I am typing it just as it appeared. They first listed him as "Cummings".
James Cummings died at 5 o'clock last evening of a short but severe attack of pneumonia, aged fifty-five years. By his death two daughters, young ladies, and a younger son are left fatherless and motherless, who have respect and sympathies of all who know them. The funeral will take place from family residence at 8 o'clock tomorrow, conducted by Revs. Tincher and Conner. The remains will be taken to Madison for interment.
Daily Evening Republican, Thursday, February 10, 1881
The next day's paper, I found this:
The remains of James Cummins were taken to Madison at 10 o'clock this morning accompanied by Elder Conner and the friends of the family.
Daily Evening Republican, Friday, February 11, 1881
So.......It appears he died on Wednesday, February 9th, 1881. There are no city directories back that far here at our library. They begin at 1882.
