The 1903-04 Bartholomew County Directory noted black residents by an asterisk before their names. Here's the listing of some of the earliest black residents of Bartholomew County. This is, most likely, not a complete listing:

In reference to the names listed above, it should be noted that no black men were listed in the Rural Free Delivery section, and none listed in Azailia, Burnsville, Clifford, Elizabethtown, Grammer, Hartsville, Jonesville, Kansas, Newbern, Nortonsburg, Ogilville, Petersville, Rugby, St. Louis, St. Louis Crossing, South Bethany, Taylorsville, Walesboro, Waymansville, or Waynesville.

All of the addresses listed were preceded by a "b" for boards or boarders.

Yes, the 1897-1898 and the 1902-1903 directories do use the *.
