The Supreme Leader Of Columbus High School Swimming
Duane Barrows took control of the Pearl Street Gym pool in the 1950s and developed a swimming program never before seen in Columbus history. He was tough on physical conditioning in and out of the water; which was his instilling determination. He won so many State Titles that this writer isn't aware of all of them. However, I know he was just as much as a leader to the young students as were others in various sports.
Duane not only thrived for perfection within the pool side, but assisted football Coach Max Andress on the fields of success. Duane goes down in Columbus High School history as a supreme leader as a teacher, coach and outstanding citizen, whom reflected positive to students and the adult community.
Coach Duane Barrows is deceased but a true Indiana Hall of Fame person in life, as well as the Indiana Swimmers Hall of Fame.

I stumbled on this excellent site while searching for information about the great Duane Barrows, my swim coach at Indiana State University. Looks like all the superlatives have already been used to describe Duane and his achievements. The only thing I can add is that sometimes, if you're really fortunate, you cross paths with someone in your life who affects whatever you do from then on. Duane was certainly that person in my life. To a huge degree, much of who I've become, or what I've achieved in life, always seems to work it's way back to something Coach Barrows said to me. He was the purist example of a leader and a friend. And I've never met anyone else like him.
Unfortunately, I also learned about the passing of my college friend and teammate "Chick" Newell from this site. As the "other" breast stroker at ISU, I spent a lot of quality practice time in "Chick's" wake.

I was very happy to find this site and to see the appreciation of Coach Duane Barrows. I also was coached by Duane Barrows at ISU during 1974 and 1975, our teams then were a great group of guys. And I hope I can get in touch with any of them, via this site. I went to a D.O.D. High School in Munich, Germany, where we had no swimming pool or program. I was astonished to see the level of competition just to get on the team, and I thank Coach Barrows due to his rigorous training program for getting me into shape enough to be able to swim along with all my teammates, who were true stars of the sport. I have a scanned picture of our 1975 team of Sycamores, including Coach Barrows, for anyone on the team, or for this site, if you wish. Sincerely, Garry N. Kolafa (Gnkolafa@aol.com)
