Another Person & Columbus Company To Identify Date: Late 1949 or January 1950 Columbus, Indiana
Comment:This man is obviously working on a lathe making a steel product of some sort. The shop area is probably Cummins, Reeves or Arvins during the 1940s or first month of 1950. The picture was taken January 1950. If you have a guess at the person's name please come forward and post a comment. Also, the company name would be of interest. This is the first posting of this picture.
Identity of these copyrighted pictures: So far we have had fairly good luck on identifying individuals and families around Columbus. Hopefully, we will continue the record and improve on other pictures.

Amazing "View Numbers" For The 1950 Copyrighted Photos & A Guess On A Desk of The Irwin Bank
Well, to start with since Nanc, Richard, George, Ricky and I worked on the photos and Nanc finalizing the approval; there have been over 10,000 views of these posts. Now, of course it took maybe 300 visits to the web thread to write and post them, but even at that it is the most viewed thread on the Columbus Historical Message Boards in such a short time.
The picture posting was approved March 16, 2009 and here 4 months later the views have been fantastic. Not only that, we have identified many former Columbus residents and in some cases found ourselves in a picture. Never, before since my board membership of 2004, can I recall such interest in a thread within, and the emails and posting comments on such a wide variety of old photos and comments. The photos have stirred the interest of folks not only in Columbus, the local Columbus Republic Newspapers and many former residents nationwide. It would be nice to find more "pots of gold" like these photos to re-stir the members and readers.
Now For My Desk Guess Related To The Irwin Bank
On page 5 (post 44) under these Copyrighted 1950 Photos is a picture of Joseph Irwin Miller at a young age sitting partially on an old desk. I have enlarged the picture and found very old ledgers, documents, and a gavel for meetings. The desk may have been restored to show its beauty from previous wear. However, it can't hid that it is an antique from the past even during the year of 1950 when this picture was taken. Here is a partial of the desk enlarged:
I am guessing that the desk has a significant personality of the time period of Irwin Bank founder Joesph I. Irwin. This would place the age back around year 1881, when Joesph I. Irwin started his bank on the corner of 3rd and Washington Street. I suspect the desk was and may still be today a display of his original desk; including some historical documents that were generated during those early days. Researching the internet antique 1880/1890s pictures of "Roll top Desks;" I found many styles of oak wood similar to this desk. Now, as I said this is a guess but what I am saying could be confirmed by someone asking I suppose. Here is the desk picture and young Joseph Irwin Miller:

Thanks to an email I received, another person has been identified.
Here's the email: "You asked if anyone knew someone in the LIFE Pictures. The picture ( I believe on page 10) of the young man holding an engine that is on a chain lift, is my Father. His name is John Robert Zeigler, known as Bob. He worked at Cummins for 43 years, retiring in 1985, I think. He passed away on 2/7/2001 at the age of 79. After working in the shop at Cummins, he transferred to the NEW Technical Center and worked there until he retired."

Comment to David: His daughter Roberta Zeigler had contacted the History Boards and at Post number 205, and 204 April 2, 2009 we had posted his name. However, you have added new information about his tenure at Cummins and movement within the company. His daughter Roberta Zeigler went to CHS with Richard and myself. I recall that Roberta was such a nice young lady and a person that always had a smile and comment if you approached her. Thanks David for the additional information.
