I ATTENDED THE WERTZ MEMORIAL EVANGELICAL UNITED BRETHERN CHURCH. THE CHURCH WAS RIGHT ACROSS HOME AVE OF THE MCKINLEY SCHOOL. WE HAD SEVERAL MINISTERS OVER THE YEARS THE FIRST I REMEMBER WAS J R SIMMERMAN I WAS TOLD THE CHURCH WAS STARTED AT MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER LAMBERTS HOUSE ON THE CORNER OF 15TH AND UNION ST. IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY I THINK IT WAS THEN LOCATED AT 19TH AND ELM ST. SINCE IVE BEEN WORKING ON MY FAMILY GENEALOGY I FOUND THAT THE ELLIOTT, LAMBERT FAMILIES WERE RELATED TO THE WERTZ FAMILY THE CHURCH WAS A PART OF THE MERGE WITH METHODIST THUS THE CHURCH BECAME UNITED METHODIST. IT EVENTUALLY WAS MOVED WHEN THEY BUILT THE PRESENT SANDY HOOK CHURCH THAT HAPPENED IN THE LATE 60S. FOR DISCLAIMER PURPOSE I WAS TOLD THESE THINGS BY MY MOTHER

I was reminded this morning of the many St. Peter's Lutheran sunrise services our family attended at the Columbus Drive-In. Yes, the pulpit was atop the concession stand, and we listened via the window-hung speakers, but I don't recall hearing any "Amens" by means of car horns. We Lutherans are bit too reserved for that. At any rate, it was a simpler time. I hope you all have a blessed Easter!.......By the way, in order to save time,(and leg work for the ushers), I'm sure the collection plate was at the ticket booth.

According to a 1983 book celebrating the 125th anniversery of the forming of the St. Peter's congregation, the building was erected in 1904. It replaced a much smaller brick structure which also stood at or near 5th and Sycamore and was built in 1871.

North Christian Church Historical Dogwood Tree Planting850 Tipton Lane Columbus, Indiana I have read throughout the internet that 43 dogwood trees were planted on the landscape of the church to represent the original 43 charter members. The National Parks Association lists it as a "national historic landmark". The church was built in 1964 and members at that time included J. Irwin Miller and his wife Xenia. I have see aerial pictures of the 43 trees from an aircraft viewpoint, but can not find the names. Maybe someone knows names beyond what I have placed herein. " I think of design in the landscape as being like a walk in nature." -Dan Kiley, Landscape ArchitectComment: Eero Saarinen designed this church and his father Eliel Saarinen the First Christian Church (1942) on 5th Street. The North church was the last building designed by Eero Saarinen (1964) before his death. Dan Kiley was the Landscape Architect. Source of picture: Terri Meyer Boake B.E.S. B.Arch. M.Arch. Eero did not design First Christian Church. His father, Eliel Saarinen designed it.

I, too, join Bob/RER, and perhaps others, in wondering just who the 43 charter members of North Christian were. For a fact, I know that mention of the 43 dogwood trees planted on the grounds of the church is mentioned during the tours out of the Columbus Visitor's Center. (Great tour, I might add.) Plus these trees are also mentioned in the National Historic Landmarks paper work that was submitted. Beyond J. Irwin Miller and his wife Xenia, it is possible that some of their older children would have been old enough at the time to be a part of the list. Who else? Anyone know?? Nanc

The Legend Of The White Dogwood BloomsChristian CompassionLegend of the Dogwood TreeAs legend has it, the cross on which Jesus was crucified was made from a dogwood tree. God decreed that the dogwood tree would from that day forth never grow large enough to be used to make a cross. Thus, the dogwood tree is a small tree. -The flower of the dogwood has four petals which makes the shape of a cross. -The red reflected on the petals represent Christ’s blood. -The center of the flower resembles the crown of thorns with bright red, clustered fruit in the center representing the blood of Christ. -The dogwood blooms in April when Easter Sunday marks the resurrection of Christ after the Crucifixion. Comment: I have always been told of this legend in the South for over 40 years. Easter was in March this year which doesn't happen often.

The Wertz Memorial Evangelical United Brethern Church was a great influence on my early life. Its an honor for me to present this information about the church First I would like to thank Mr and Mrs Bill Ahlemeyer for giving me the materials to present and especially to my mother Roberta Hinkle who provided the pictures that are included. Mom created a binder of pictures and gave it to the church. The church was started in the residence of Daniel Wertz and Racheal Lambert at 1468 Union Street in 1892. This was my grandmother's grandfather's residence My grandmother Ruby Lambert Elliott and my aunt Ruth Lambert Cole were the last of the descendents still with the church in 1972. AUNT RUTH AND GRANDMA RUBY FERN ORIGINAL ORGANIZERS OF THE CHURCH Later in 1893 the first frame church was located at 19th and Elm Street in 1922 the congregation paraded to 17th and Home Avenue to the new church dedicated to Professor Samuel Wertz Mr Wertz was the janitor, teacher, bell ringer, furnace starter and also was the principal of Columbus High School. THIS IS MR WERTZ FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL LOG In 1972 the new church at Sandy Hook was built and the name was change to Sandy Hook United Methodist Church The church started as United Bretheren, it later merged with the Evangelicals. and finally merged with Methodists to become United Methodist THE BELL FROM THE WERTZ CHURCH ON HOME AVENUE NOW IS OUT FRONT AT THE SANDY HOOK SITE

The First Baptist Church Disaster Relief Team has been hard at work these last 8 weeks "muckin' and guttin", and now restoring members homes and other homes in the Columbus Community.
As of August 1st, the Team has joined forces with the Long Range Recovery Committee, through United Way. If you are needing any type of recovery/rebuilding assistance now or in the future, please contact United Way. They are now in charge of all future Recovery/Rebuilding assignments. They will continue to need Volunteer help, if you are interested.
If you are a former member that lives out of town or state, and would like to donate to our Relief Fund, please make a check payable to First Baptist Church Disaster Relief Fund. Mail to: First Baptist Church 3300 Fairlawn Drive Columbus,IN 47203.
THANK YOU SO MUCH to all who have been a "surrogate" Good Samaritan for me.
Slowly but surely WE ARE making tremendous progress. Have heard so many compliments from the National Red Cross, and FEMA Reps that they have been amazed at the Volunteer response, and the "Neighbor helping neighbor " There is still a lot of hard work to do, as our Lord guides us each day.
We have been "Blessed....to be a blessing"

Interesting Historical Tapestry First Christian Church 5th Street Columbus, IndianaAs many are aware the Church Architect was Eliel Saarinen a Finnish architect. The present church was built and completed around the year 1942. What is even more unique and interesting is Mr Saarinen's wife completed a very large tapestry that hangs in the church. It is considered one of the largest tapestries in the United States. It was woven by his wife Loja Saarinen. The tapestry illustrates the "Sermon on the Mount." Comment: I have no picture of the tapestry but if someone does have a picture it would be nice to post it herein for historical purposes. The picture above is not the church tapestry.

A little added information from my tour guide training...and quoting from the National Landmarks nomination document:
"...Saarinen’s wife Loja, who assisted him in the design of the large tapestry in the sanctuary (“The Sermon on the Mount”), and directed its weaving in her studio at Cranbrook."
"Above the choir hangs a large tapestry, “The Sermon on the Mount”, designed by Eliel and Loja Saarinen and woven in Loja’s workshop at Cranbrook Academy of Art."
At the time it was installed in First Christian, it was the largest tapestry that had been produced in the U.S.
