In 1958 Two Future "Indiana Hall Of Fame" Coaches Were Best Friends Basketball Coach Bill Stearman and Football Coach Max Andress preparing the film projector for game reviewing. Little did the two know that someday they would be in the Indiana Hall of Fame for their respective sports? It is very easy to say that these two outstanding coaches and citizens were some of the most influential teachers and coaches at Columbus High School for over 20 years. Their "can do" attitudes and magnetic personalities affected not only the athletic programs, but students throughout the school. Both are deceased now but their memories will long stand in the halls of Columbus sports minds as well as students that grew to know and respect them. Bob

"Max Andress Football Field"Named after his 21 years of dedication to the sport and school at Columbus North High SchoolLocated at 25th and Maple Streets Max Andress died last week and his funeral is today. The following partial quote from the Columbus Republic paper March 27, 2007 by Harry McCawley is provided: Quote:"Max’s funeral is today. After the 10:30 a.m. funeral mass at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, the procession will make a detour on the way to the cemetery. It will proceed to the Max Andress football field at North High School, making a lap on the running surface and stopping at the 50-yard line on the home side. His 21 grandchildren will get out of their vehicles and each will send a balloon into the sky over the field named for their grandfather. " Harry McCawley End Quote.

CHS 1960 Football Team Won All Games & The Conference CrownBulldogs Undefeated Season This team coached by Max Andrews, Duane Barrows, Ted Marston and Walter (Wally) Page went undefeated that year. They won all 10 seasonal games. They didn't have any teams even come close to them during those games. They shut-out 40 percent of the teams played. They beat one team 40 to 13 as their top scoring game. The teams most valuable player was Bill Spicer. John Gentry was selected to the all-state first team. Other selected conference honors were given to Bill Spicer, Graham Updike, John Moore, John Gentry and Jack Hinkle. Jack was also a good extra point kicker. He was classified as a sure extra point each effort for those points. The team scored 254 points in ten games with a average of around 25 points a game. Opponents only scored a total of 45 points in the ten games played. This group had tremendous team and school spirit and the local fans were very supportive. Source: 1960 Log

I WAS GOING THROUGH AN OLD SCRAPBOOK OF MY BEST FRIEND THIS A PHOTO OF THE TOUCH FOOTBALL TEAM FROM ABOUT THE 1954 ERA ONE REASON FOR PUTTING IT HERE WAS THAT THIS PICTURE CONTAINS AT LEAST THREE OF THE GUYS WHO A FEW YEARS LATER WERE MEMBERS OF THE UNDEFEATED FOOTBALL TEAM OF THE 1959 SEASON. THEY ARE PREPARING TO CELEBRATE THE 50 YEAR REUNION OF THAT SEASON ON AUGUST 21, 2009 FRONT ROW; WAYNE THOMPSON,PHIL CAMPBELL,UNKNOWN,BILLY WISSMAN,REEL TALBOTT SECOND ROW; JOHN MILLER, MERRILL MCMAHAN, GRAHAM UPDIKE, DAVE ORTEL BACK ROW; COACH BILL SOLOMON, JACK HINKLE, CAL BRAND, DICK BONEBRAKE, COACH JERRY GATTEN I THINK HELP HELP HELPCAN ANYONE TELL ME WHO THE BOY WITH THE FOOTBALL IS PLEEEAAASSE!!!!!!!!!!! WHATS INTERESTING ABOUT THIS PICTURE IS THAT JACK HINKLE IN THE BACK ROW WAS THE QUARTERBACK AND GRAHAM UPDIKE IN THE MIDDLE ROW WAS THE CENTER. Dear Jack and others, I have sent this message about the 1959 Footlball Team out to all of my CHS Contacts. They are always a fountain of information. I understand Carole Burton has already sent you info on two of them already. Charlie Snyder sent me a message that Charlie Wells is an attorney here in Columbus. He seems to think Stepp is in Oregon ? Will continue to await news for you. The internet is a marvelous place for info from so many contacts you don't have the time or money, to call. I just don't have the energy anymore to post on this web site,as much as I did. However, I try to scan it at least once a week. Will get back with you again, if I hear any more. Some people only check their messages once or twice a week, so it may be a few days. Your CHS Classmate from '55 Margo McCalip Hughey
