Induction of Brent Simmons In The United States Gymnastics Hall of Fame 2008Former Columbus High School (CHS) Graduate Middle 1960s• Brent Simmons was a member of the men’s U.S. World Championships Teams in 1970 and 1974, and won U.S. titles on the parallel bars in 1971 and on the horizontal bar in 1974. He competed in the 1971 Pan American Games and earned the team silver medal and the bronze medal on the horizontal bar. In 1971, Simmons led the Iowa State men’s team to the NCAA team title, as well as won the parallel bars and the horizontal bar titles. He was the 1971 recipient of the Nissen Award and was an All-American on four events. He has been a national or brevet judge for 25 years and served as the master scorer on men’s vault at the 1996 Olympic Games. Simmons earned a bachelor’s degree from Iowa State and a master’s degree in sport management from East Stroudsburg University. He currently works in regional sales for Midwest Gymnastics Supply, Inc., and resides in Columbus, Indiana. The first unbeaten season for the Columbus gymnasts occurred in the 1967-68 season (this was an incredible year for CHS sports overall. See basketball and swimming).
The 1968 Gymnasts won the State Crown. Coach John Hinds led the Dogs to State wins 1967 through 1970.
That gymnast team of the 1967-68 season consisted of: Curt Hill, Jim David, Gary Sublette, Fred Harms, Greg Sellars, Bill Zeigler, Dave Seal, Dave Carter, Rob Traylor, Mark Northrop, Rancy Scofield, NIcky Woolls, Ric Flahr, Kevin Herr, Manager Ted Fox, Manager Mark Harold Coughlin, John McDaniel, John Miles, Rick Robertson, Bob Byrd, and Dennis McAdams.
