I know we have discussed high school sports in other Threads. It's time to create a distinct Thread covering our high school sports!

The First Columbus High School Track Meet Year 1917No better place to start this track site than "in the beginning."Keep in mind this is the time period of Francis Crump, Kermit Maynard and Chuck Taylor days. In this first event at the fair grounds they had a bicycle race at the track meet. Notice Francis Crump won the bike race and pole vault.Historical comment: The Crump family has been well know in Columbus history for many years. Above you will also see that Kermit Maynard (brother of movie great Ken Maynard) was in this track meet. Kermit and Ken were in a few western movies together. One movie titled "Drum Taps;" they both appeared in. Kermit the track person graduated in 1916 at CHS and Ken went out West to movies. So, in summary three famous former CHS folks were in school together during the first basketball and track teams at Columbus High School. They being Francis Crump, Chuck Taylor (tennis shoe famed)and Kermit Maynard. Source: Log 1917
