The 1965 Downtown Business Contest! The object of the contest is simple: Below you will find a link to an aerial photo of downtown Columbus, taken in 1965. Click on the link. When the photo opens up, you will find the buildings have been numbered. Simply identify as many of the buildings in the photo as possible. There are 131 numbered buildings. The person who identifies the most buildings correctly wins the contest. Use whatever tools you can find to identify the businesses that were in the buildings in 1965. City directories, the Historic Columbus Indiana website, the 1965 Columbus Indiana telephone book, etc. You may want to begin your search for answers at the Bartholomew County Public Library's Indiana Room. NOTE: When compiling your answers, please taken into consideration that some of the buildings may have had more than one business. If you can, name all of the businesses (if a downtown business was on a second floor, its address was denoted by a 1/2, for example, 406 1/2 Washington St.--Mutual Of Omaha Insurance Co.). Once you have finished identifying all the buildings, please make sure you are satisfied with your answers. In submitting your answers, first list the building number, followed by the business(es) that were in that particular building (i.e., 33 - G. C. Murphy's 5 & 10). Once you are satisfied, please email your answers to me at columbushistory@sbcglobal.net. CONTEST DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS WILL BE NO LATER THAN MIDNIGHT, SEPTEMBER 1, 2008!The person who identifies the most business locations the most accurate will be declared the winner. The contest is open to everyone (except me and Richard!). In order to award the prizes, you must be a REGISTERED Member of the Historic Columbus Indiana Message Board. 1st Prize: $50.00 CASH! 2nd Prize: $25.00 CASH! 3rd Prize: $15.00 CASH! Well, the map contest is now officially over. I am still pouring through the 1,000's of emails I received regarding this contest, so it will take some time before I will be able to announce a winner.
Winners will be announced in the very near future!

Better late than not at all I guess. I found the 1st Christian Church downtown, across fifth St. is the old library. There was a small park north of the library. Does anyone know what name it went by? I remember walking through it many times but as a carefree kid, didn't pay much attention to that sort of thing. Bob Lane
