I think that everyone here will agree that Tony deserves his own Thread here on the Historic Columbus Indiana Message Board.
Of course, it goes without saying that when most of us here were all youngsters, Tony wasn't even a glitter in his parents eyes.
I have one story I'd like to share about Tony (and Tony--if you ever read this, you can correct me if I'm wrong)...
I have a friend that used to manage Ski World, in Brown County. Ski World WAS once a hopping place. It was located on SR46, about 5 miles out of Nashville on the way to Bloomington. ANYWAY, my friend was at work one day and Tony comes walking in and asks him if he could get a job working on their go-karts. Ski World had a FUN go-kart track back then, and my friend hired Tony to work on them and keep them running in tip-top shape. Tony did a fine job, and eventually started holding races there on Saturday mornings.
I'm not sure how long Tony worked there, but one day, Tony walks in and asks my friend for a 25 cent on the hour raise. My friend told Tony "no" and Tony quit!

Good Story Dave !! I can believe he would quit if he didn't get a raise. I have had mixed emotions about this driver. Was very disappointed in him when his temper gets the best of him ( similar to a Coach from Bloomington) both on and off the track.
However Bob Franke speaks highly of him and a lot of what Tony does for Charity is not known. Surely wish he would either shave or grow a beard...the 5:00 shadow is now a " heavy weekend "
He had a very unhappy ending to his "Race for the Chase " last week and will have a loooooong end of season ahead of him watching the others this time.

Hi to all, and perhaps you all might like to check out Tony Stewart's homepage website. msn.foxsports.com/name/public/NASCAR/TonyStewart/Index It is quite extensive, and Margo, it does make note of what he is doing in the way of charitable things. I have to also make note here, that Tony Stewart DID contribute items for us to give away at the Historic Columbus Celebration in July. They were surely much appreciated, and we thank him for supporting this function with these donations. Know that the items I brought home of what Tony donated were much appreciated by my family, having several avid fans of his in my midst. And these items were well received at the celebration, as well. Thanks to Tony, for his support. Nanc

Today's Republic, sports section. Tony Stewart is "out of the running". He crashed his main Chevrolet just minutes into the first practice and then ended up only finishing 18th in Saturday night's race. So our own Tony is out of it for the NASCAR's Chase for the championship this year. He will not be eligible for the Nextel Cup title when the postseason starts next week.

TONY STEWART WINS AGAIN!
It seems our boy Tony is doing very well since he is no longer in "the chase". In Fort Worth at the Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday he finished FIRST, leaving the rest of the pack far behind. The Republic reported he "often was so far ahead, it appeared he was all by himself on the track".
WAY TO GO TONY!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)

Stewart wins 2nd Chili Bowl 1/16/2007 6:07:00 AM By Tim McKinney for The Republic In spite of the fact that Saturday morning found Tulsa, Okla., buried under a thick coat of ice, every seat at the Chili Bowl seemed to be full and standing room in front of the Jumbotron monitors seemed to be at a premium. This was probably one of Tony Stewart's best weeks ever as his favorite car owner, Glen Neibel, was elected to the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Stewart won his second Chili Bowl Championship. Only three other drivers have multiple Chili Bowl titles. World of Outlaws star Sammy Swindell has four and Cory Kruseman and Dan Boorse have two each. Stewart won the 2002 Chili Bowl driving a Bullet/MOPAR for Keith Kunz Motorsports of Columbus. This year he was driving his own car, a Spike/Chevrolet. Saturday night Stewart lined up fifth for the championship race. When the green flag waved, Shane Cottle charged into the lead with Dave Darland and Davey Ray on his tail. By the time that the fifth lap went into the books, Stewart was running second. The caution flag for a shunt involving Wayne Johnson and Casey Shuman then stopped the action. On the restart, Stewart put pressure on Cottle while Darland and J.J. Yeley battled for third behind him. Stewart kept the pressure on Cottle. After running wheel to wheel for half of Lap 10, Stewart took the lead and was never seriously challenged. Yeley then got past Cottle and followed his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate to the finish line. Justin Allgaier fought his way to third place trailed by Cottle, rookie of the race Donnie Ray Crawford, Joe Boyles, Chris Windom, 2006 Chili Bowl champion Tim McCreadie, Mat Neely and Tracy Hines. Jordan Noblitt of Columbus drove his Columbus Silgas-sponsored Ford Focus Midget to ninth place in the first "G" hooligan. Steve Arnold of Seymour finished 10th in the second "G" feature.

Tony Stewart won the first of the Daytona Twins on Thursday! I guess they aren't still called the "twins" but thats how I remember them anyhow. It's the qualifying races for the Daytona 500.
Way to go Tony!

Tony Stewart didn't win the Daytona; he was involved in a "crash" with Kurt Busch in lap 153. Tony had been "the favorite" to win the Daytona but the wreck filled race was not to be his again.
Guess it will have to be yet another year for Tony to achieve his "Super Bowl" as he related to friend Peyton Manning after his Super Bowl win over the Chicago Bears.
Good luck Tony and we all know you will be racing toward that checkered flag many years to come!!! Columbus is proud of our hometown hero.

AMEN!!!!! I just wish Fox would change "Rushville" to "Columbus" in their graphics. This is, after all, the information age!

The following appeared in the Columbus Paper, The Republic on February 23, 2007
Stewart glad to get back in groove
By Andy Proffet Sports Editor
Although the Daytona 500 is the opening race of the Nextel Cup season, Tony Stewart feels like it's the second race that really marks the start of the season.
"Once we get away from Daytona, everything kind of settles into a groove," said Stewart. "We're back in the weekly grind.
"Once you leave California, you feel like the season has officially started."
Stewart said some of that has to do with the usual three-day race weekend leading to Sunday's Auto Club 500, as opposed to the two weeks race teams spend in Daytona.
"I think everybody's pretty worn out after being in Daytona for so long," Stewart said. "California means a normal routine and a chance for the crew guys to get back to their families for a couple of days." Stewart and his crew hope a winning chassis will get them back into the winning groove.
Chassis No. 120, which Stewart will race this weekend, is the same mount with which he won three of last season's final eight races.
However, the chassis - and Stewart - will have to break a streak at Fontana, one of four Cup tracks where Stewart has never won. The others are Las Vegas, Talladega and Darlington, S.C.
Stewart has run well at California Speedway, however, with five Top-10 finishes in 11 career starts. He likes that the track has more than one groove.
"It's nice knowing that as a driver, you can help yourself out and you're not relying so much on the car," Stewart said.
Rough start, no worry
If history is any indicator, Stewart's bid for a third Cup championship didn't take much of a hit with his last-place finish at Daytona.
In 2002, Stewart finished last in the Daytona 500 when an engine failure on Lap 2 ended his day early. He went on to win the first of his two Cup titles that season.
In fact, only four of the last 12 series champions finished in the Top 15 at Daytona.

Our guy Geroge was on the Channel 8 late news! Good to see Tony win and Columbus in the news for something positive for a change. For those who didn't know, Bob Franke / Dairy Queen was Tony Stewarts first sponsor when he was was about 12 and racing go-carts! Diehard Tony fans should hang around the Dairy Queen night and day because he will show up eventually to get his "Tony shake"! Nice way for Bob Franke to celebrate his 40th anniversary in business there This Boards Racing expert, George, was interviewed by The Indianapolis CBS station, Channel 8.

Tony wrote a book called TRUE SPEED. If anyone gets a chance just read it and it will tell you where he came from and how he got to where he is today.

Tony lived in a friends home in Rushville for a short time and this was his address when he signed up for one of his races. NASCAR picked this as his home and now uses it instead of Columbus.

Indiana legislators salute Tony Stewart on Monday, February 4, 2008. Tony, a Columbus, Indiana native wore a dark suit and had his customarily unkempt hair slicked back while standing on the floor of the Indiana General Assembly. House Concurrent Resolution 10, honored Stewart on his string of accomplishments as a racer and humanitarian. “This resolution congratulates Tony on his victory last July in the 2007 Brickyard and recognizes him for his many outstanding accomplishments in the field of racing that have made Hoosiers proud.” Tony George, Indianapolis Motor Speedway chief executive officer, presented Stewart with the 2007 Allstate Brickyard 400 champion’s ring, which commemorated Stewart’s relatively easy win last July. George also echoed some familiar tones from the afternoon: staying true to Indiana. “He’s one of the most tenacious race drivers to ever get behind the wheel.” George said. “It’s a pleasure to call him a friend.“ “As he’s gone on to pursue his professional career and gained fame around the world, he still considers Indiana home.” Stewart said he loves spending time in Indiana. However, the hectic schedule of NASCAR, which will open on Saturday with the Budweiser Shootout at Daytona, keeps that time limited. “This is something that every week when I’m done with my racing, I really look forward to this…being back home in Indiana,” he said. “I’m very proud to call myself a Hoosier.” Stewart later said politics were not a regular part of his life, but his sense of humor played well in his short address to the gathered politicians. “I’m sure I’ve probably got a speeding ticket in every one of your districts,” Stewart said. “You should be thanking me for helping pave your roads.”

My other post today told of Tony Stewart’s humanitarian endeavors. The local paper, The Republic, on Monday, February 4, 2008, had a story about the Bartholomew County Board of Zoning Appeals rejecting an application from, ‘Trails of Hope.’ Trails of Hope, a nonprofit organization, applied for a conditional-use permit as a riding academy. The organization built a barn so it could offer indoor lessons and provide year-round sessions for children and adults with disabilities. The riding center is on a four-lot subdivision, with 10 acres for each lot at 9185 East road 700 North. Traffic is on a shared access easement, meaning all parties must share the cost of maintaining. Today’s paper in a letter to the editor, the mother of one of the children said she had been taking her daughter to a facility in Bloomington the past four years. This family lives in Seymour, Indiana and told of the time she was saving by having this facility near Hope, Indiana. She said the benefits of Therapeutic horseback riding is a beneficial form of exercise and recreation for people with a wide range of disabilities. Professionals in the medical field have found that therapeutic horseback riding is beneficial because of the horse’s gentle and rhythmic motion and warmth of the horse’s body. Therapeutic horseback riding can increase muscle tone, increase strength, stimulate joint and muscle function, elevate cardiovascular and pulmonary output, increase self-esteem and confidence, enhance memory and communication skills and build positive relationships with others. The Monday story continued to say that Trails of Hope has support from Behavioral Healthcare, Bartholomew County Community Corrections Department and the Tony Stewart Foundation.
