My first license plate, it was on a 1936 Ford. I payed $ 165.00 for the car and it had a new paint job. It was on a car lot behind the Wake-Up filling station on the corner of 2nd and Jackson St., like to have that car back.

When did phone numbers in Columbus go from a 5 digit dial number (example in the year 1953 a five digit like this 27549) to a seven digit number like DR6-XXXX (Drexel exchange etc.) ? I know in 1963 it was 376-XXXX and not Drexel etc. any longer. Richard may have some phone books that have short numbers and others with long numbers. Hello, can you hear me now ? Way Back When: I think they had 3 digits after wagons became less vogue and Model Ts were in style. LOL Bob

As IF I had nothing else to do than check for long ago phone numbers!!!!! A 1927 Log reveals: Merideth Garage, 24 hour service, 55 Ed L. Schaefer, Oakland, Reo, Pontiac, 688 Barnaby's Flower Shop, 9541951 Phone Directory Barnaby's Flower Shop, 6146 A friend of mine, 3466 My family, 4837 Another friend, 7312 AND THEN I NOTE in the same directory, the addition of another number to the sequence A friend, 2-2132 Miller's Highway Service, 2-27511952 Phone Directory has quite a few more with the extra number of 2. It sticks in my mind, that when more was added to the prefix, that many kept their original 4 digit phone number, and for many years thereafter. Richard, what are you finding in your directories? OK Nancy,
I’m back home. My wife said I could take her to Cracker Barrel Old Country Store for (do I dare say), SUPPER! She had a large breakfast with eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy with coffee. I settled for the chicken and dumplings with macaroni & cheese and apple sauce along with ‘sweet tea’.
1953 City Directory doesn’t list phone numbers with the name listing. It does show a bell in the street listing if that address had a telephone. I’ve looked in the Business Listing and I found both four and five digit numbers.
The 1957 City Directory has a Numerical Telephone Directory. The first number in this list is 3012 with the last three being 25698, 33188 and 45561.
The 1959 City Directory also has a Numerical Telephone Directory. The header of the listing is ‘DREXEL EXCHANGE’! The first number is 2-1037 with the last being 9-9998. The DRexel was/became 37x-xxxx.

Quoting a previous post of mine: On recognizing license plates, two incidents that I can recall. One in 1950, driving across the Painted Desert in AZ, we came up on a car going the opposite direction. One of those ZA, ZB, ZF plates----and hark, hark, indeed a family from Columbus, I want to say Dr. Fischer/Fisher. We sat there in the middle of the road and chatted a bit. Okay, I'm still on a quest to find a photo of the ZA or ZB license plate, I ran across just the most interesting newspaper article. Gad, in small, hometown USA/Columbus, IN in 1950, let's face it nothing is sacred. There was a column written by Ann Green, 'Entirely Personal,' remember that? ?? Surely this column was the 'party line in print.' ;D This is an account of the trip my family made in 1950!!! Dated June 29, 1950 from the Evening Republican. Most facts I do view as accurate. ;D Altho' I thought we were gone for more like a month. (Our vacation account is near the end of this article.) So, I thought we met up with the Fisher family in the Painted Desert, and this says it was the Petrified Forest, was just a tad off on that part. And yes, exactly as reported, I was NOT to ask to purchase any special souvenirs. I will have to openly admit one thing I desparately wanted to buy was one of those miniature leather western saddles that one would hang on a rear view mirror. In 2000, in a trip through AZ, I did make that purchase to satisfy my longing of the past. Have to admit that, lo these many years later, those 25 rolls of photos mean a whole lot more to me than some cheap souvenir. Just a word of thanks to my mom-----she wrote descriptions on the back of every single photo that was taken! Think I got 'cheated' on those 'organizing genes.' ;D When I did find this article, it truly made my day. Fifty years plus, ago, we so lived a simplier life, and we so shared with one another. Was it Peyton Place, do you think? I don't know, I really don't. Seems to me it was just a matter of everyone knew everything about everyone else in town. Nanc

Nanc, I believe articles were submitted to the paper for this column. Someplace in one of my photo albums I have a similar thing written about (if you can believe it) how many places were set at someone's table for a certain holiday. I think they put it "so many covers were laid" or something to that effect. Also as late as 1960 items could be submitted because I also have an article about Don and me arriving in England, that I am sure my mother must've sent in to the paper.
I don't think we had our own Peyton Place as you said but the town was small and I guess the paper wanted items of interest that people wanted to share. It was definitely a simpler time and how very fortunate we were to have grown up during this time. I wouldn't want to have been born any other place or at any other time. How about you?

Folks, this is true trivia! For sure! I just hung up from a phone call from CO, from the husband of my dear Columbus friend, Sue Ann McClure, who I have mentioned in some of my 'numerous posts.' ;D Sue moved from Columbus about as many years ago as I did. OMG, it hardly seems possible that Sue passed, now five years ago. It was truly a thrill to answer the phone this evening and have her husband, Ed, just 'checking in.' You just 'gotta believe' that Columbus roots go deep. These roots, these Columbus roots, go deep, and far and wide. If you have ever called 'Columbus home,' trust me, we are special. We really are. And richly blessed. My love to all, Nanc

Bob, You will be pleased with your new Dell, I'm pretty sure. We have two and have been extremely pleased. Sorry your old computer is "sick" and maybe the new one will arrive sooner than you think. :-)
It won't be long and you will be back to posting more memories for all of us to read and enjoy.

Not quite sure where to post this but this seems as good a spot as any. You all might want to keep Nanc in your thoughts and prayers as her mother is in the hospital. They discovered a blood clot in her left ankle and she is having tests done to determine if she is well enough to take blood thinners. Boy if it isn't one thing, its a dozen others! :-( So Nanc will be absent for a while, I'm sure. She spent all day yesterday at the hospital and most likely will be doing the same today. Take a minute or two and say a little prayer for one of Columbus's biggest supporters. Nanc is really gung-ho about our hometown even though she's been gone a long, long time.
Also it does one's soul good to think of others and to extend a hand of friendship and concern to someone when they are going through trying times.
God bless Roseann and we hope she will be out of that ole hospital and back home soon. Also God bless Nanc for all she is going through right now. Love and best wishes to the family.

Thanks Babs, for the kind thoughts, and prayers. Just finished a 14 hour day at the hospital. Surely, not out of the woods quite yet, but we did 'dodge a couple of bullets today,' sooo--oooo, here's to good tomorrow's reports. I can make this post 'Columbus Trivia,' as I left the hospital this evening, one of the new nurses on duty was named Irma. Just couldn't get that across to Mom, 'until' I said, "You know, Mom, like Doc Turner's wife, Irma." Her eyes lit up, and we 'connected.' See, folks, Columbus 'exists' in So. Cal. Love to all, and thanks! Nanc

I'm going to be out of touch for about three weeks, but Nanc I hope you know your mother and you will be in my thoughts and prayers. Hang in there and I surely hope all the news you get today is good news.
Everyone keep a "good thought" for Nanc and her family while they go through this trying time. Nothing quite like having an elderly parent in the hospital and feeling so helpless to do anything to make them feel better.
Know our prayers are with you. :-)
I loved the Doctor Turner connection! Think your mother's heart is here in Columbus as well as yours.

On October 1st, RER wrote: I can't ask for help because the email system is sick as a dead dog. If you have any advice Richard write it on here and you can delete it after I tell you it either worked or didn't.RER, follow this link and it may be of some help to you: tln.lib.mi.us/~amutch/pro/ie/activexupdate.htmHope that helps. Also, you might want to try to start your old computer in SAFE mode: Turn the computer off, and restart. Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again. Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected. Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode. Running in SAFE Mode will NOT let you connect to the internet. But, you may be able to repair any damage done. While we're on this subject, did your old computer come with a BOOT disc or a RECOVERY disc? Some XP models do, and some do not. Some PC Manufacturers DO NOT offer you a disc with Windows XP on it. It's already built in to your existing computer. I thought that the F10 key handled all that, but it could vary from PC to PC. As a last option... Reformat your hard drive. If your computer didn't come with a disc that has Window XP on it, it's already built in to your system. You just need to find out from the PC manufacturer how to do it. Searching brand name, model, and how to reinstall XP on the internet might help. Reformatting your hard drive totally ERASES everything that is on your computer, and sometimes is the only way to correct things that have gone wrong. You start over from the beginning. This means that you have to reload any and all drivers for printers, scanners, and anything else attached to your PC. If you decide to do a REFORMAT, be sure to back up any and all information that you do not want to lose. Best thing here is to burn that info to disc, and then put it back on your computer after the REFORMAT.All this is assuming you have Windows XP on your computer...

Hi to all, and thanks for the kind thoughts and prayers for us, Columbus transplants on the west coast. With my mom, it is one day at a time, and hopefully tomorrow will get some positive things into place. Am truly threatening to write a book, and David, I am sure you could 'add your chapters' to this 'health care industry saga!' And man, it is beyond my belief. I will not use this forum for my soapbox, will just say 'thanks, to all of you, from all of us.' Love to all, Nanc

Dear Nanc Just had time to read through the Trivia section.
I'm so sorry to hear of your mother..Roseann's health problems. Just know a lot of people in Columbus will keep you and your Mom uplifted with prayers during this hectic time.
I know how tiring it is to run back and forth to a hospital each day. Try to get some rest yourself if at all possible. Please keep us updated when you have the time...Give your Mom a soft hug from A Hoosier Grandma Blessings to you and your family... Margo

George, by any chance is that the sign that's on the north side of State Street, just past Gladstone if travelling east?
Is that the sign for the trailer park?
