Did anyone see in the paper recently talking about the murals painted on the walls of the basement of the Bob-o-link site? One was apparently painted by a prominent Brown county artist. Alas there are gone as the basement has been filled in but they also found the original Bob-o-Link neon signs down there! I believe Hutch Schumaker retrieved them for safekeeping. I love old signs and hate to seem them destroyed. So many prominent landmarks in these old signs that just disappear as progress rolls on.

Denny's Restaurant (estimated dates late 40s early 50s)
The Denny's Restaurant was located at North US 31A going toward Taylorsville. Over the years Dave Burnside had an office and mobile home sales in part of the old building and behind the building. In the latter years of the 1940s our family would go there and eat a chicken dinner with bread, butter and a drink for probably less than one dollar. I don't even know if the building is still there today. Does anyone have a picture of this early eatery?
NOTE: Because of misinformation I changed this post. It had information about the Bob-O-Link that wasn't accurate. Sorry but now I think it is correct. Thanks George and Babs !!

George, you may be right about Denny's. I asked another person and they weren't sure. He thinks maybe it was Denny's, then Bob-O-Link then closed for move to 46 and 31. Heck, I am not sure even the Bob-O-Link was there now, but do remember the place. The chicken dinner with bread and drink may have cost less than a dollar. Maybe, 75 cents per person in those late 40s days, not sure. Maybe, someone else will remember the history of the building. UPDATED: The info here is about Denny's not the Bob-O-Link. Denny's closed in the early 50s. The Bob-O-Link was never at that location. Bob

George and RER, I remember Denny's being out on 31, there where the road makes a Y.
One evening a friend and I were out there to eat and her car broke down. Some nice fellas came along (we didn't know them) but they drove us back to town. Sure couldn't accept a ride now from a stranger could you? As I recall they were soldiers from Camp Atterbury.

George and Babs...........I changed the original post around so it wouldn't misinform people. You two are correct about the Denny's name. It closed I think in the early 50s and was at the "Y" as Babs said on North 31 and 31A. Thanks for your help and knowledge.....

For some reason, and I may be way off base, the name Denny Cox keeps coming to mind as being the owner of the Establishment? . I do recall going there when I came home from the navy in 1957, and it was under new ownership then, I believe. How much longer it stayed open after that I can't remember. The Bob-O-Link opened right after WW2 at the junction of US 31 & 46. by a Robert Bierlein. A few years latter the Bob-O-Link Jr. was opened next to the Bob-O-Link, which was a drive - in only with curb service. The Bob-O-Link Jr. latter became a liquor store and was there for several years.

Hello All,
I remember Denny's Drive-In at the "Y" at US 31 and Old Indianapolis Road(now 11). It was open until at least the late fifties. I was a child but I lived in that area until 1962 or so and clearly remember going there for Great hamburgers, etc. It was always very busy!

What is on the Denny's Drive-In site today? Is there any building on or near so I can pinpoint its location in my mind? Gosh, I'm glad David increased the number to 50, on the recent posts. I got way 'behind' here. Plus a HUGE WELCOME to the new members. We love you adding info. Guess memories of 'Denny's' is going in this link. As I was reading through the posts and catching up, I sort of got 'thrown' as I never remembered it having the word 'drive-in' attached to it. Frequently, we would ride the horses, a huge group of us, out to Denny's for a Sunday breakfast. Know that we forded some river there on, probably 31, I guess west of Washington St. When it was flooded, and the water did spread out a lot over the low lands below the highway, we would make use of the bridge. Being on a pony, neither route was much fun, as that river was a lot deeper normally. than say Hawcreek. Seems to me that we 'picked up' a RR track out a ways, and followed along that to Denny's. In my memory, I can picture Denny's as a 'truck stop' as often big semi-s would be there. And it just so stands out in my mind that one trucking line had the name of 'Huber & Huber.' Remember when it was the 'in thing' to say "Hubba, Hubba," perhaps this was said when one saw a good looking guy or gal? I remember 'misreading' what was painted on the semi-truck, and being teased when I asked why that truck said "Hubba, Hubba." Sharon, are you out there checking the boards, do you remember that? Remember, I am younger and probably lacked some reading skills. ;D Think that was also the first place that I ever saw 'writing' on the bathroom walls. Whatever naughty thing was written, Sharon suggested that I ask my mom to explain it to me. These are definitely not food memories!!!! Here's to the memories, off the wall, as they may be. ;D Nanc

Denny’s Restaurant In the 1953 City Directory it lists Denny and Ruth Cox as employed at Denny’s Restaurant. In the 1957 book it lists Denny and Ruth still living at 1607 Washington Street however the restaurant is now listed as Denny’s drive-in. I find the same listing in the 1959 Directory. Nancy, I also think of it as a Truck Stop. It seems to me that it was open 24 hours. During those pre I-65 years, US 31 was the main route between Indianapolis and Louisville Ky. I suspect that the opening of I-65 was the beginning of the demise of Denny’s. I’m thinking that the opening of I-65 between Taylorsville and Seymour occurred in 1963. Wasn’t Karen, class of 1961, the daughter of Denny? If we can find her, perhaps some more information could be obtained. Ricky, It’s the building that’s on the point. If memory serves, it has the row of flag poles along the west side. You could enter the lot from both US 31 and US 31A. US 31A today is Indiana 11.

Okay, gad, I keep forgetting that I have a 1951 phone book sitting beside me!!!!! Thank goodness for a recent computer replacement, but sadly I need to get back into the swing of scanning photos and onto the boards. In this 1951 phone book, there is an ad, with a drawing of Denny's---------AND it clearly bears the name of 'Denny's Drive In.' Says 'Eat at the Point' and 'WE NEVER CLOSE.' Going on to say '3 mi. north of Columbus on 31.' Get me through this weekend and participating in the local Cancer Walk, offering the love of my therapy dog, and I might be able to scan this ad. Here's to getting the memories in order!!!! Nanc

Since the discussion sort of "veered off course" from Bob-O-Link to Denny's, I created a Denny's Thread and copied and pasted the messages into that Thread. This is an interesting discussion, so let's continue it in the Denny's Thread. Thank You... Also, you might noticed I got rid of the "Sub-Boards." After some thought, I didn't feel that this original Board (i.e., Restaurants on the Welcome Page) didn't really need sub-boards. All of the original posts still remain. You just don't have to click twice to get to a topic!

Getting things back "on course" regarding the Bob-O-Link, here's a picture: It's kind of difficult to make out in this picture, but the building to the right of the Bob-O-Link was something like "The Bob-O-Link Junior." Wasn't carry out available here? Maybe it's just the angle, but I remember the Bob-O-Link being much larger than what the picture shows. Or, is it possible that I'm thinking of Waffle House? After Bob-O-Link closed its doors, this building became the Waffle House. Does anyone remember if the Bob-O-Link added on, or that occured after the Waffle House took over? This gives the viewer a very good glimpse of the corner of 25th St. and National Road in the 1950's (the corner where they're currently building the new CVS Pharmacy). There really wasn't much out that way!

This is another ad from my trip to the microfiche files at the Bartholomew County Library last Monday. I was doing a little research to find more information from the ‘Saddle Club Reports’ from December 1947. This is part of a December 9, 1947 ad for the opening of the Bob-O-Link. As far as I know the complete page cannot be viewed on the screen and the full screen cannot be printed. The articles and ads are printed from the film and then scanned before I can post them here. I realize the quality is poor, but it’s the best I can do with the resources I have.
