Times line of the Hinkle Sandwich Shop in Columbus, Indiana. The following information, listed in the Columbus City Directories was gleaned by member george and me on March 24, 2010. Board member jdhinkle has posted about the Hinkle Sandwich Shop in this Lucas Brothers Thread. 1931 - 1932 – No Hinkle Sandwich was listed. 1934 - 1935 – A Hinkle Sandwich was listed at 423 Fourth Street. Winfred M. & Mildred Hinkle, were listed as the owners. 1936 -1937 – Hinkle Sandwich was listed at 423 Fourth Street and at 406 Fifth Street. 1938 - 1939 – Hinkle Sandwich shop is listed at 1202 Washington Street. 1940 - 1941– Hinkle Sandwich shop listed at 1202 Washington Street. 1942 - 19 43 – The Columbus City Directory no longer lists a Hinkle Sandwich Shop. Also, Winfred M. & Mildred Hinkle, are no longer listed as residents of Columbus.

WITH THE RELEASE OF THE 1940 CENSUS RECORDS I HAVE BEEN ENJOYING THE SEARCH OF BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY AND FOUND SOME ADDITION INFO ON THE HINKLE CONTRIBUTION TO COLUMBUS AND HANDING THE SHOPPES TO LUCAS BROS AND OTHERS WINFRED HINKLE WAS 1 OF FOUR BROTHERS WHO WERE IN THE HAMBURGER SHOP BUSINESS YOU CAN SEE THEM TOWARDS THE BOTTOM APPEARS THEY ALSO HAD A MAID. IMAGINE RUNNING A RESTUARANT WITH 3 BOYS UNDER 10 YEARS OLD IN THE 1940 CENSUS WINFRED HIS WIFE MILDRED AND 3 SONS PHILLIP,ALAN AND TOM LIVED AT 1109 LAFAYETTE A COUPLE OF BLOCKS AWAY MY MOM AND DAD AND OLDEST BROTHER LIVED AT 1035 SYCAMORE ST AND THEIR NEIGHBOR WAS ERIT 'BUD' KLINE MY DAD WORKED FOR WINFRED IN COLUMBUS AND ALSO AT NORTH VERNON IM SURE WINFRED'S FAMILY WENT BACK TO BLOOMINGTON IN 1941 AND MY FAMILY MOVED TO INDIANAPOLIS LATER THAT YEAR

Word on the street is that Lucas Brothers is closing the doors at the end of July, 2012. I guess if you want one more burger from there...you better hustle!

Do you remember Lib's Nook on Washington Street ? It was what I considered "upscale" when eating a lunch there in 7th grade, with Gretchen Meyers. She ate there every day with her gaggle of followers.

I'll have to check with Mom, but I believe my Aunt Goldie worked at Lib's Nook when I was a kid. Would have been the 1960s.
We didn't eat out as a family, but when I started working (paper route), I would occasionally eat lunch there. They had the best meatloaf dinner!
