I received this fine email regarding Fire Station #2 and the men that worked there.
Hey George, We lived at the other end of the block at 1334 Hutchins and let me tell you many a time did we go down to the fire station to get a coke, or my favorite a Nehi grape, or maybe take cookies to the firemen. It was indeed a gathering place. I lived at that address all thru high school and that is where we caught the bus to town, where you would meet people, etc. All the firemen were friendly and looked out for all the kids in the neighborhood...and there were quite a few just in the block North of the station. You always knew there would be a friendly smile and a welcome as you got off the bus and took off towards home. I miss those days; it is sad that nowadays kids have to be so careful and parents have to teach them to not talk to strangers, etc. I think as we get older we all maybe miss "the good ole days". Babs

JK, you are really 'good about reading between the lines' and yes, to all of what you said. And because I knew where Lonnie lived, as well as that he worked part time at the garage there, was the only reason that I sort of knew the location. I sure don't recall a pasture, but know that Lonnie and his dad kept their horses, like in a converted garage on their property. Nanc

Fire Station # 4 after completion in 1967. At the time you could say that it was almost located in the country, it was surrounded by corn fields.

I received this fine email from the son of a firefighter that I served with while on the Columbus fire Dept.
Hi George,
Fred Schroeder here! I suspect that you will remember me considering all of the hours that I hung out with Dad at new No.2. And, a few at old No.2 as well though memories are rather sparse. I was only a few years old at the time. I do have a few memory flashes of the place. I well remember when Dad held me up on the pole a few feet and let me slide down. It nearly jarred my teeth loose when I hit bottom! Or the time I kicked the pole doors open. Dad nearly killed himself grabbing me. Man, that was a long way down to a little kid!
I read one of your posts talking about being at the old No.2 and at the new No.2. I told my wife that the only George I knew was George Kelly. Then I punched up the e-mail and saw your last name.
I just stumbled across this site and have spent many hours pouring over it. It brought back a flood of memories and more than a few tears. I often think back to what a wonderful time it was in my life.
If you wouldn't mind giving it out I would love to have your phone number. Talking to you would be a real kick. So many things that I would like to ask and find out about.
I do hope to hear back from you. It was a bit of a jolt to see your name pop up. I would hate to lose track now.
Best regards,
Fred Schroeder

In the early 1950's the Columbus Fire dept. sponsored a motorcycle race at the 25th St. Fairgrounds. Selling tickets at the entrance to the Fairgrounds are members of the dept. L-R, Bud Kline, Bus Adams, Lawrence Siekman, Ed Harris, Frank Strohe, on the motorcycle but not a member of the dept. is Ralph Vogel.

He married my cousin Carol Schwartzkopf who lived at 8th and Hutchins Ave. What a surprise ! He and Carol were members of the Stoney Lonesome Motorcycle Club along with my other cousin Fred Schwartkopf . Carol passed away 2 years ago and Ralph is living in Madison In. He worked for Dunlap's for many years here in Columbus. It was always a thrill to myself as a very young girl to have them ride up to our house on their Shining Harley's. Thanks for reviving a special memory for me !! Any chance I could get the picture to make a copy of it ?? Ralph's family lives here in Columbus and I would love to give a copy to them. Margo

When we lived on Indiana Ave back in the early 1940's the Vogel's lived just down the street on the corner of Oak and Indiana Ave, Ralph was a little older than me so I really didn't get to know him, but I sure remember the family. I will make some prints of that picture and you can stop by and pick them up any time you wish, we are in the phone book for the address, I think we are near to you. Thanks for letting me know about the post card, I'm still thinking about bidding, I would sure like to have it!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D.

Richard Thanks for posting this pic. It was so good to see Ken Greenlee and Bill Maze's pictures again along with yours. Ken is a member of First Baptist Church and has several Fire Fighters in his family history. Will have to tell him Sunday I saw his pic. Bill has taken many wedding photos for our family and also took pics at our Class Reunion last year and did a fantastic job!

A BIIIIG THANK YOU goes out to George Kelly for making copies of this picture of my cousin Ralph Vogel on his motorcycle. I spent a very enjoyable but too short a time visiting with George and his wife this past week as I picked the pictures up. I plan to hand deliver them today to his two daughters who live in Columbus. I know they will be thrilled to see their Dad in "The Good Ol' Days". Ralph married my cousin Carol Schwartzkopf and along with Carol's brother Fred they were members of the Stoney Lonesome Motorcycle Club off of 46 in Brown County. Ralph currently resides in Madison In . Carol Fred and Johnny are with their Mom and Dad .. Margaret and Walter Schwartzkopf in Heaven waiting for the rest of us to appear someday.

My mother Nellie McCalip was instrumental in starting the process for a Volunteer Fire Dept in Scipio. She had invited Ken's father Dale Greenlee to speak at an informational meeting while she was Pres. of Scipio School PTA in the '50's. As we lived in the country close to Scipio on St. Rd 7 she knew how much the area needed a Fire Dept. From Dale's speech the ground was laid for a Fire Department in Scipio. Every time I pass that building now I say " Hi and Thanks Mom " as it brings back special memories. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ For those of you interested in Fire Departments and Buildings I thought I would let you know the SCIPIO VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT is celebrating their 50 yr Anniversary this Sunday Sept 17th from noon on with a fish fry and lots of activities scheduled. I hope to drive down after Church to recall memories with the building and to say "Thanks" to those who are serving as Volunteers now. Care to come along It's very easy to find ......just drive south on Rd 7 for apprx 13-14 miles. The Fire Department sets on your left hand side. If you get to Scipio School you've gone too far. WARNING !! This town is noted as a Speed Trap. It is posted 40 - 45 mph and most of the time a State Trooper sits just before you get to the school or just as you enter the town.

I had a great time Sunday when I went down to this celebration. They had trucks from Columbus and Hope there also on display. The Fish Was DELICIOUS and some one had donated plenty of home made ice cream !! The best meal I've had at a fish fry this summer. I got to talk with an elderly genteleman Clyde Hines about the fire station and it's history. They had several old newspaper articles stapled to a large piece of plywood on display. I took some pics but doubt very much if they turn out. Unfortunately the have not kept a scarpbook or any journal of the Department's history. First Time I had seen them play water ball and it was great fun !! There was an article in The Republic about it and will have to take time later to post it in here. I met some high school class mates Allen and Harriet Tirtel Dillman and we ate together while watching the firemen get drenched with the hoses while trying to move the bright yellow ball. I try to support as many of the Fire Departments in their fundraisers as I can. We owe a lot to every fire department personnel for the long hours they serve and to me they are all Heroes !

I was not sure whether to place this here or in the " Every thing Non - Columbus" Folder. So will do both and Richard or Dave can delete one of them for me.
THIS IS THE TYPE OF HERO OUR CHILDREN NEED TO LOOK UP TO AS A ROLE MODEL !!! Scipio-Geneva Fire Department ( NORTH VERNON PLAIN DEALER )
Sep. 19, 2006
By: Bryce Mayer Mike Burkman accepts an award from Megan Forney Batton. Emotions ran high during the Scipio-Geneva Township Volunteer Fire Department’s 50th anniversary weekend. During a ceremony Saturday honoring all firefighters past and present at the fire station, Megan Forney Batton presented a special award to Mike Burkman who has served as a volunteer with the department for 35 years.
Eleven years ago when she was only 12, Batton was attempting to walk across a bridge spanning Rock Creek. High water from spring flooding swept her into the water.
Burkman, who fortunately lives nearby, heard the report on the scanner and arrived quickly. Although he can’t swim, he dove in and after riding the current 50 yards downstream managed to pull the then unconscious girl out of the raging creek.
He administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation to Megan, who was not breathing and was without a pulse until he revived her.
“I don’t remember anything from the time I fell into the creek until I woke up in the hospital (Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis),” Batton said. “We were just being kids, acting foolishly then (when the accident happened). I still consider Mike Burkman my guardian angel. He had quite an impact on my life.” Batton, who still lives in Geneva Township is now CPR certified herself and plans to become a volunteer firefighter when her children are older.
The crowd in the Scipio firehouse applauded her remarks, then laughed when Batton said, “I apologize to Mike for interrupting his dinner and vomiting in his mouth that day.”
Tears welled in Burkman’s eyes as he came up to get the award, a wooden replica of a fireman’s ax on a plaque.
“I wasn’t the only one involved in Megan’s rescue,” the 52-year-old firefighter said modestly. “Seeing Megan and her family here today is how we (volunteer firefighters) get paid.”
Volunteer firefighters long ago began helping at emergencies that are not always fire related.
“Volunteers started doing just fires,” said Lt. Allan Leeds of the department. “Now we are a full-service agency responding to medical emergencies and all types of rescues. We are a big town fire department in a small community.”
Roger Johnson of the Indiana Fire Marshal’s office agreed.
“Megan’s story epitomizes what volunteer fire departments do,” Johnson said. “Scipio-Geneva Township provides a classic volunteer firefighting service. I’m very proud of them for their 50 years of service and the governor is, too.”
During the weekend, firefighters put on extrication demonstrations and waterball battles for the enjoyment of people attending. There was also a fish fry with proceeds going to help with the purchase and maintenance of equipment.
But nothing could top the award presentation from Batton to Burkman. “It was awesome to present him the award,” Batton said. “He saved my life.”

When I read the posting about the volunteer fire station in East Columbus I thought of the grocer, Bill Palmer whose store was on State Street, and his house on the side street adjoining the store. Mr. Palmer trained a couple of black “Scotty Dogs” to do a lot of tricks and would put on shows to raise money for that venture. He also gave the shows for free at the orphans home and maybe other places. I still remember dad and mom going there to shop. Mr. Palmer waited on every customer alone, one at a time. He still had time to ask about everyone’s health and job status. What about that? That was back in the 1940’s.

The Looking Back Column today for 1956 said that Albert Dahn retired from the Columbus Fire Department. Captain Dahn, started his career in 1900 with the Volunteer Fire Company. He served as Fire Chief three times during his career.
When I was a teenager and hanging around Station # three, Mr. Dahn was known as Capt. and Curly.
