I don't remember Columbus Center being called that back in the late 1960's.
J C Penney's relocated here from downtown sometime around 1970.
I thought I remembered Danners 5 & 10 Cent Store being here, but my 1966 City Directory shows it at 25th & Beam Road. Danner's also had Danner's Trolley Stop Cafeteria at that same 25th & Beam Rd. address. Remember the ads for their "beer soaked hot dogs?"
I know that Danner's finally located in this shopping center. I'm just not certain of when.

Ponderosa Steak House and a pizza parlor was located on Marr Rd just behind this center. Ponderosa was built in the late 60's. Ponderosa on Marr Rd was the first to have Tuesday night specials and also was the first to have a banquet room. Just think on how Tuesday night became a night that was adopted across the nation. I am sure a lot of eating places would have wished it never happened. Haha

I remember Danners, JC Penney, there and when Big Lots (I think it was called Big and Small Lots back then) took over the store at the corner. I can't remember for sure what used to be there. Was it called Tempo? I remember Big Blue took over the Penney building first didn't they? It seems before that Big Blue was in a building close to where the Centra Millenia Center area is. That was the previous site of the grocery we shopped that I mentioned in the Northside drug thread. It also seems there was a fire there when Big Blue was there.

That grocery was Thrifty Mart. And yes, Big Blue burned to the ground there and later reopened in Columbus Center in the spot that had previously housed JC Penny. Tempo was in that shopping center when it first opened.

There was also an A&P grocery store, Hills Department store and the Columbus Cinema.

There was a Tempo dept. store at Columbus Center and Penny's. Penny's also had a auto center at the present main entrance to the center. Danners and the Trolley Stop were in the approx. location of the present Big Lots. I don't recall the "Stop" having beer soaked hot dogs, but I do remember the "Lum's " Famous hot dogs steamed in beer" restaurant that was at the present Arby's at 25th & Pennsylvania. The present Enterprise car rental at 25th & Caldwell was originaly a Car wash and Pizza hut was in between the two. Oh, I feel Old!

During the late 70's the corner spot (where Big Lots would later occupy before taking over the Danners spot) was Century. They had a toy section (bought a lot of Micronauts and View Master toys there) but were primarily a Sears-type store, most of their items were ordered through catalogs.

25th and Beam Rd is the road on the west side of Columbus Center and that was what it was called in the 60s and Danners 5 & dime was always located there until it closed. I used to go there every weekend to get baseball cards in 60s and 70s at Rexhall Drugs and mom used to shop for groceries at JC Food Store next door in same center. I don't remember Columbus Center being called that back in the late 1960's. J C Penney's relocated here from downtown sometime around 1970. I have been trying to locate some pictures of Hills Department Store inside and out, but have had no luck. Does anyone have any they would like to share?

The pictures aren’t great, but do show the location of the sign above the lobby.Attachments:
