Thanks guys for the info and the picture of the White House dept store -- all I remember is that I worked in the infant dept and knew nothing about baby clothes! And that season I was working 2 jobs to save money to go back to IU, and was exhausted!

Wasn't there an Air-Way (seems like it was spelled ayrway- but that didn't look right, either) that was across the street from Shoppers Fair? Around where Rural King is now? Seems like my mother may have worked there for a very short time before she did her 30 plus years at Public Service...

Ayr-Way was in the same building where Rural King is now located. Ayr-Way was a discount store chain started by Ayres department store. They were later all taken over by Target which was there until they built their newer building down the road. Today’s Looking Back column in The Republic, lists the following information from 50 years ago which was in 1963. A building permit for a Shopper’s Fair was issued on road 31 Bypass. The building is to be between Como Plastics and the A and H Truck lines terminal buildings.

Shopper Fair was just about exactly where "Herman Darlage Drive" turns off 31 (where the stoplight and Steak 'n' Shake are now located). It was the first "big box" store in Columbus.
