Hello To All...
Sorry I haven't been around much as of late, but spending the entire day at the Event really took its toll on me.
As most know my health situation, I don't feel it necessary to delve into it once again. I totally over-medicated myself to get through the day's activities, as I couldn't have lasted as long as I did without doing that.
I am plagued with a positive outlook. That might not sound like much of a "plague," but when it comes to the amount of dedication and work that goes in to putting on such an event, I have to come to the realization that I just cannot do it, no matter how great my positive outlook might be. I have neither the strength nor stamina to truly "give it all it needs."
So, with that said, I have to say that I cannot be the person in charge, if there is another Historic Columbus celebration next year. If someone else would be interested in spearheading and running the show, I will offer my support as best as I can.
I couldn't have done it without the help of all the committee members. They were the ones who truly made the day what it was. Babs, Rhonda, Richard, Linda, Joy, Margo, George, Jim & Tim Loesch, Margie, and Nanc were the ones that made this event a success. Thanks also needs to go to my brother, Dale Sechrest, for getting Tim Grimm and Craig Thayer to entertain us. Thanks also to the Bartholomew County Historical Society for sponsoring us, and all the vendors that brought such interesting items for us to peruse over.
I have had time to reflect upon what I could have done and didn't get accomplished. I should have taken more time to get more images ready for showing during the day. I scan my images somewhat different that most here. I use Photoshop CS, and save all images as a photoshop image, and not JPEGs. In order to do a slideshow, the images need to be saved as a JPEG type file. I should have pounded the streets more and asked for prizes, which I didn't. While the Republic did a fine job of advertising the event, I should have taken advantage of radio and other forms, but didn't. I still haven't gotten out the thank you letters, but I hope to get them out this coming week.
Now, I'm not looking for any sympathy here. I'm just being totally honest about things. And the greatest honesty is that I think it would be best if someone else is in charge, if it is decided to do it all again next year.
Personally, I was hoping for a greater turnout. Did the weather have something to do with that? Maybe. If it would have been held indoors somewhere, would we have realized a greater attendance? Who knows? I remember going to one of the Old Timers "conventions" inside the Donner Park building back around 2002. I do think we had a better turnout than what I saw there.
I wish I would have worked more closely with Michelle Bottorff at the Bartholomew County Historical Society, and any "lack of involvement" on their part is entirely my fault. It would be nice if whoever runs the show next year would work closer with them in planning the event.
It's been over three years since my appendix ruptured. One would think that I would have realized the limitations set upon me because of what happened. Well, I think it's just starting to set in. It's funny in a way: I keep telling myself I'm going to get better, but it's time to realize that's just not going to happen. I need to come to grips with what I can and cannot do. And, trying to organize something such as this is something that I just cannot do.
So, if anyone would be interested in volunteering to run the show again next year, that would be great. You would have a wonderful committee with which to work...

DAVE
I think you did a TREMENDOUS JOB HOSTING OUR FIRST EVENT !! I myself am learning to live with some physical limitations and I know personnaly how difficult that can be. The ones I talked with said the weather was their biggest deterrent that day - - so maybe an inside venue might work better ?? I thought we had a GOOD TURNOUT for as hot as it was.
May you gain your strength back as soon as possible Dave. I know we are all praying for you !
I'm hoping we can divide into Individual committees for the next one..instead of one person handling all the tasks. I love do publicity or arrange entertainment and I hope I am in good health so that I can do more next time. Myself..I know I was exhausted at the end of the day.. and I still went home for 3 hours to rest in the afternoon !!
Time for my nap as I still am dealing with breathing problems and stamina each day.
STAY INSIDE DURING THIS HEAT WAVE IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.

Well, I don't think anyone will be willing to take Dave's place as the head of the next Historic Columbus Celebration. Dave Sechrest was the inspiration and tireless cheeleader and organizer for this event. THANK YOU DAVE! However I'll bet we are all willing to work harder, plan smarter and encourage others to help us. As I recall the germ of this celebration was just a desire to put names to the faces of some of us folks on the website. Maybe a picnic or a get together to share pictures and memories and thoughts about Columbus. What it turned into was a very successful community event with a lot of participants who had just as much fun as any of the guests.
We should continue to have regular meetings and begin to plan early. Express our ideas here and explore options for locations so we can set a date and get it on all the community calendars. There will alway's be competing events so we need to just pick a date and all work as hard as we each can to make it happen.

Hi to all, and for, what now, at least two days, I've pondered a reply. First of all, David, know that we all are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. Think Margo put it best, when she mentioned how difficult it is to accept having to limit what you do. And noone can truly appreciate that til 'they have walked a mile in your moccasins.' Take care of yourself, David. Secondly, I sincerely believe that the July 15th event was just wonderful, and probably, if we, the committee, are really honest, it exceeded, in success, beyond our wildest dreams and expectations. It was a first, we really didn't have a clue--------Who would come, how would it be received, did we do enough pre-planning----and the list could go on. List!!!! Yep, thanks to Babs, the committee sort of does have a 'list of procedures.' For the unknowing, the committee has already had a 'planning ahead' meeting, that Tuesday after the event. That meeting was so much fun----admittedly we sort of basked in reliving the success of the 15th, brainstormed how we could improve it for next year, what we needed to do as follow-up, talked about a starting point for plans, shared memories and visited with friends. That was quite an evening at the Commons, and I don't think that any of us really wanted to leave. Know that I didn't, for sure. As I am truly blessed, with the exception of three of the committee members that I did already know, I made such a wonderful group of new friends and renewed friendships with the friends of my past. You ALL are the greatest. Okay, David--------here's the deal. With you at the helm this year, and such a wonderful coach and cheerleader combination, you have 'put the game into play.' The committee has the ability to use your coaching and cheering from the 2006 event to move forward for an event for next year. I am so confident that we can do it-----we have the game plan and really are ready to proceed. It is going to amount to a lot of team work. If we work together, divide the tasks up into little chunks, we can do it. To others, I truly extend to you, an invitation to become involved. I can promise you, you will be richly rewarded in making new friends, have the opportunity to explore Columbus history, and be contributing to Columbus, then and now. I have IMed with one person and exchanged emails with others, and the ideas for next year are already taking on 'a life of their own.' I am much to far away from Columbus to participate in the day to day, week to week, month to month planning. But I can help, I really can. If any of you are willing to offer suggestions, participate in any way, and are perhaps too shy to say anything publicly, please feel free to email me privately and I will get your information to the committee. Many hands make light the work. Get in touch with me: ylns5281@aol.com Know that there is a committee meeting scheduled for, I think September 26th, so I'd say we're ready to 'rock and roll' to a 2007 Historic Columbus Celebration. Let's do it!!!!! We have a year to put an event together. Nanc

thinking ahead. One of the factors in determining the location of the get together next year should be the weather. The heat on the 15th was, I think, a detriment to the attendance.
Something to consider might be the Commons. We could have displays down the middle and in the commons area both, if we had enough exhibits.
Did I read somewhere about a meeting of the committee?

Margie, Unless they have changed the date, our next meeting is supposed to be September 26th at Jim Loesch's place of business, which I believe someone said is over on 11th Street.

A quick update here. We held our first meeting last night regarding next year's celebration and had eleven people on hand. We discussed where, what, when and who will be involved.
If this year's very first event was a hit, just wait till next year. :-)
Room for more of you to join in and get in on the initial planning of the event, so if you are interested, the next meeting will be in three weeks on Tuesday October 17th, 6:30 p.m. at the BCHS museum on Third Street, downtown Columbus. Please come out and get involved. There is plenty to do and the more volunteers we have the better it will be for everyone. Its also a great way to meet new people and make new friends! :-)
Date and location for our "second annual event" will be announced after the next meeting or whenever a firm date can be locked in.

A grateful " Thanks " to Jim Loesch for inviting us to use his company's building as our meeting place.
I enjoyed so much seeing all the old license plates on the walls... the numerous large gasoline cans.... and the display of small oil cans. Good to greet the committee members from last year and to welcome two new ones to our group... Michelle B. from ther BCHS and Orwic (?) J. I second Babs request to have some other people join us to plan the next event. YOU do not have to be local...just ask NANCS
It's FREE... it's FUN... and It's FOR YOU !!!
Looking forward to the October 17th meeting at the Historical Society's building on third street. Blessings ....Margo

Hello All, Sorry I missed the meeting this week, but we were still away on our trip. Arrived home last evening around 7 p.m. Linda sent me the dates for the next meetings, so I at least know what is going on and where and when to meet.
I've missed reading all your posts and know it will take me some time to catch up on everything.
We were fortunate to have wonderful weather for our entire cruise and only hit bad weather as we docked in Galveston on Sunday. We did drive through the very area where there was so much flooding and I believe four people actually drowned because of it. We got to our car and headed North just as fast as we could, so got out of the "danger area" almost immediately. It did rain on us all day but once we got North of Dallas the weather cleared up a little bit.
It is great to be back home and each and every time we go away someplace, I come home more and more convinced that "Columbus is a wonderful place to live".

I was just thinking, do you suppose we should rename this particular topic as the next event is not going to be July 15th as this years was? Perhaps take the July 15th out of the headline? It might be confusing to some.
Okay, having said that, hope everyone makes it to the meeting tomorrow night at Loesch's Heating and A/C Co. at 630. Plans are being made now for next year's event which is tentatively set for April I believe. Everyone is welcome so if you'd like to make some new (great) friends, come on out, join us and jump in with both feet. It is a lot of fun and we have a great time whenever we get together.

For those who don't know the 2007 event is already being planned. It will be in The Commons on April 14th (10am till 5pm). There is major downtown development planned for the Commons and Courthouse Mall space in mid 2007 so it will be one of the last chances to experience The Commons space as it is now. As controversial as it once was it has been a gathering space for Columbus events of all kinds for well over 30 years. I think its an important part of downtown history. We also hope to somehow focus on the old Central Middle School building (CHS to many of you!) as it will be facing the wrecking ball before the start of the 2007 Fall class sessions. Nanc, I hope you might somehow be able to make it again this year....you are with us in spirit as you were such a big part of last years event. I was just thinking, do you suppose we should rename this particular topic as the next event is not going to be July 15th as this years was? Perhaps take the July 15th out of the headline? It might be confusing to some.

This post does, indeed, belong in this section!!!! As truly, the highlight of 2006, for me, was journeying to Columbus to participate in the July 15th Historic Columbus celebration. As we cleaned up that day, there were several of the posters advertising the event left over. Not being really sure what I would do with them, I took enough to 'cover' my daughters, my mom and myself. Set off to the post office, secured a mailing tube, and mailed them home, thinking that I surely didn't want to carry them on the plane with me. Once home, I did get the posters out of the tube, and that is where the mental juices ceased to work. AND I totally forgot about them. In scouting around the house, getting ready for Christmas, oh, my, I quickly saw the error in my ways. With semi-rolled posters in hand, on Thursday, yes, December 21st, I dashed to the nearby art/framing store. The dear gentleman asked when I wanted them, and being rather disgusted with my forgetfulness, I responded, 'Yesterday!' With that he smiled and replied, 'Best I can do is Sunday, will that work?' I just picked them up, and they are BEAUTIFUL when framed!!!! And I so know they will be the highlight of this Christmas, along with the 'books' that I put together. My girls and my mom will be so thrilled. Here's to Columbus memories of 2006, as well as long ago. Nanc
