To any and all involved with the Celebration at the Commons Saturday, whether planner, participant, entertainer, or visitor--THANK YOU!! for a great day!! I was joined by my daughter, my wife, my sons, and my grandson in setting up, visiting with people, answering questions, and packing up. We enjoyed all of this, and we learned also. We are already thinking about next year and marking items to share. My wife, Gayle, especially enjoyed sharing the 3rd graders' time lines. An interesting sidelight, I had a telephone directory from 1954 displayed, and so many people picked it up to look up a name or number. Several items rang a bell with people who said they would like to bring similar things next year. .

Let me add my thanks and congratulations to all involved in this years event: the committee, the individuals and groups with displays and especially the people of Columbus who might have purposely or accidentally wandered into our event. The folks at the visitors center passed along to me that they received many positive comments about our celebration.
If people didn't hear the news Zaharakos has been "adopted" by local businessman Tony Moravec who is planning to fund the entire restoration of "The Greeks"! Hutch Schumaker shared that information with us that has yet to be released publicly! It might possibly be open in some fashion by Christmas.
Rovenne Quigley took us on a "flashlight" tour of every "nook and cranny" in the Crump....from the basement to the hidden areas of the balcony that had been walled off years ago.
The Commons was the perfect location but we need to start thinking of where we can hold next years event. I'm on-board for sure!

" Oh What a Beautiful Morning ~ Oh What a Beautiful Day " I am still overwhelmed by the gifts the Planning Committee bestowed on me. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH ! However we know this was a venture that all members participated in and the results were outstanding !! It was so good to stand on stage and hear our revered webmaster David be honored on His special Day ! Make no mistake David you are the Heart and Soul of this venture and we all look up and love you. Not only for bringing the History of Columbus to it's residents and visitors but for the genuine person you are. I was delightfully surprised by my cousin from Indianapolis and my nephew from Ca. who came to our Event. They enjoyed it immensely and renewed old memories of Columbus when they were young. I am hoping some of the attendees will post some comments about the celebration . Especially what they liked and also what they may not have liked or would like to see changed or added. This would give us some idea on what to plan for next year. I will not make the recap meeting as I will be in Mo with my daughter and grandchildren to celebrate several special moments with them. It has been my great pleasure and honor to serve with the Planning Committee this year as my health allowed me. I am not so sure about next year due to health issues so I may not be able to participate then. We'll just have to wait and see what the Lord has planned for me. I certainly know we made the attendees feel like Columbus is ONE SPECIAL TOWN !

Mayor Armstrong Pays Tribute & Respect To Margo HugheyThis lady deserves a lot of credit for working super hard to "Make Things Happen" for the 2nd Annual Columbus Historical Celebration. Talk about someone that used energy she found somehow, and second breaths; she is crowned the lady of the year for her extreme tireless efforts in finalizing the puzzle of events.Bob

david, we need to start a new thread for 2008. I am sure a lot more people have suggestions already than me and I am brimming over. Not only dressing period wise but contacting the industries in town for their time lines and displays of some of their products of years ago. How many people remember that Arvin made outdoor furniture at one time? Also, I know we have every thing on the website but I think we need some kind of scrapbook. For one thing, we need to get Margo to search her brain and come up with a list of suggestions for making this event such a sucess. I'll bet she could write a book of instructions. Maybe we could all help her remember so we don't lose some of the information. I know my memory is about as long as----what was I talking about? We need to really get busy now while the iron is hot and maybe rest awhile when the weather gets so hot we can't think. Does anyone know what kind of floor plan will be left when they finish all their work at the Commons? We might even have to think of someplace else.
Well need to quit my ramblin' and get busy. My house looks like Fibber McGee's closet.

To all the Columbus Historical Committee and Board members:
My wife and I want to thank each and everyone for their warm reception to us during the April 14, 2007 Celebration. We will never forget the reception at the door with Babs, Nanc and daughter. We drove from 70 degree weather, arrived Columbus in 30 degree weather and rain, but that didn’t disappoint either, one bit. The event was a total success with our guess between 800 to 1000 folks and families showing up at the Commons Mall.
The events went like clockwork because of all committee members and others putting in quality, time consuming amounts of effort in pre-planning. We visited all the displays and tables and found a great amount of Columbus History was being shown.
Sam Simmermaker started the celebration and from there it all was so well organized, that I don’t recall any problems of any size. I don’t know if we will be back next year, but we will try to make an effort. My brother in Florida may try to come and Wanda you must call him Smith Jones (Bob Jones brother). Thanks again!
P.S. The return trip from Columbus to South Carolina started at 34 degree weather, no sticking snow from Lexington Kentucky to Asheville North Carolina. The weather in Columbia South Carolina late evening was 50 degrees and storms all around including a tornado not far from our home. Bottom-line ……it’s great to be home!

These two individuals are Bob Records and Terry Galbraith (son of "Bud" Galbraith who at one time owned a photography Sudio in Columbus. )You can see a section of Terry's wife Marcia. For those of you that were able to see the painting of Irwin Gardens at my tables Terry had painted this in his High School years. Terry worked there while he attended CHS.
