My icon is taken from a black and white countdown strip that preceded some tv shows back in the 1950's/1960's.
I picked the "nine" as that's how old I was when first allowed to stay up late on Friday nights and watch Selwin, Channel 8's Horror Host. At that time, he was hosting Tarzan movies...

The Clovers version of Love Potion #9 hit the pop charts in 1959. It peaked on the charts on November 16th at #23.
The Searchers version peaked on the Pop Charts on 1/16/65 at #3.
The Clovers had minor hits with Blue Velvet (a #1 hit for Bobby Vinton in the 1960's) and Devil Or Angel (later a hit for Bobby Vee), in 1955

Manhattan New York Restaurant & Barber Shop Prices Year 1935Comment: Normally, I would not post things unrelated to Bartholomew County & Columbus. However, I couldn't resist taking this picture and splitting it in half, and enlarging to show the prices. This is during the tail end of the 1930s Depression times in our country. As many know New York is very expensive on about everything today. Talk about inflation.......wow! You couldn't buy a candy bar today with these prices.

Hope Indiana Movie Theater Early DaysBartholomew County IndianaBecause there was no place to post this theater, I had to place in this subject post area. I never attended a movie here in Hope Indiana, but some readers may have. The sign in the window indicates it was used as a church after movie theater closure. No other information is available. Readers may post more memories of the Hope Theater. Source: Indiana Department of Natural Resources, by Governor Mitch Daniels web site.

Bob,
I attended a movie at the theater, It would have been in the early 1950's, can't remember the price of admission, but it was a big thing back then for the town of Hope. I believe the building is still there?, I will check the next time I am over there.

More Than 100 Years Making Good Ole SorghumFrom The Library Of CongressGwaw Bone Sorghum MillLocation: 4883 East S.R. 46 (West of Columbus 15 miles)Gnaw Bone Sorghum Mill uses a horse-powered wheel-press to transform sugar cane into sorghum molasses. You can buy bottles of it as well as all kinds of put-up jellies, jams and preserves. Pictures Below Dated 1906: Comment: Sorghum molasses was used as a sweetener until it became more expensive to grow, harvest and render than to buy sugar. It came in real handy during World War II, when sugar was rationed.
Most farmers in the midwest grew enough for their own use–some raised extra to sell.
Just 15 miles West from Columbus is Gnaw Bone Indiana near Brown County State Park. Now, at the intersection of Gnaw Bone is the famous Sorghum Mill. It has been in that same location for over 100 years making Sorghum using mules and horses to walk the circle so the cane would be squeezed for the sorghum process.
I remember as a young kid riding to the Gnaw Bone area and purchasing the bottles thick brown stuff. On a piece of toast or bread it is a great treat for young and old. I can still taste that good ole stuff even though I am half way across the country.
When I make the trip back to Columbus I try to remember to get a jar of Sorghum.

Life In 1906 On The Outskirts Of Columbus Going West State Road 46 Toward Gnaw Bone IndianaFormerly Part Of Bartholomew CountySource: From The Library Of CongressBrief: Less than 15 miles from Columbus in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Keep in mind this part of Brown County was formerly part of Bartholomew County before they adjust the county lines. Comment: You think you have it tough? Not really when you see these photos from the Library of Congress. Many surrounding farm areas in the 1800s through some point in the 1900s; it looked like these pictures. The library stated the second picture had a family of 10.. Source of Pictures: From the Library of Congress Washington DC. Theodor Jung, 1906- photographer.

Brown County Is Part Of Bartholomew County History From 1821 to 1836Comments: Yesterday I posted a few pictures of present Brown County related to very old settler homes and the Gnaw Bone Sorghum Mill all within about 15 miles of Columbus. The reason is simple because when Bartholomew County was established in 1821 the county was larger. At that time there was no Brown County. Then in 1836 Bartholomew County gave up some of its land to establish Brown County and Monroe County also gave up a piece of it's former land to establish Brown County, that you know of today. So, we can say Brown County is part of Bartholomew County history until year 1836. Here are two partial maps that reflect what I am am talking about. The black and white map shows a larger Bartholomew County, and the colored map shows the establishment of Brown County. The red oval in the first map shows the areas given up to Brown County. Map Dated 1822 Map Current 2010Note: I had posted a similar post under the 1800s a few years ago. This is just a refreshment because of the Brown County posts I mentioned.

Two Unique Pictures Of Brown County Long Ago (formerly Bartholomew County)From: The Library of Congress I love this picture with the elderly lady sitting and her picture reflected in the mirror. Also, the coal oil lamp probably was her only source of light at night. Further, it appears to maybe be winter with her wearing the stocking cap or it could be her sleeping cap. The picture reminds me of "Whistler's Mother." This next picture of a long ago home in Brown County shows the wood cooking stove outdoors. The rain water was collected from the house roof through the channeled erection shown. The old metal wash container stacked with wooden boxes on top. I had no idea so much of Brown County was originally part of Bartholomew County, Bob. Thanks for posting this map with the area circled in red. My dad was from Brown County and my mother's family was also so my roots go way back to that area.
Your map was very enlightening to me as practically the whole county was Bartholomew County to begin with, just a small portion was Monroe County. I have a map that our son gave me of Bartholomew County and just checked and it does show Brown County to the West so it has to be one from after the beginning of the new county.
Thanks again.

Saints 31 ________________________________________ Chef Completes Large Pot of "Super Bowl Gomwich Concoction" Gom (Sloppy Joes)It took me 70 minutes in lieu of the time in recipe, but it really is great in my book. If anyone wants to cook this sloppy stuff here is the recipe I went by to the words: PREP TIME 10 Min (more needed for this Chef) COOK TIME 20 Min (more needed for this Chef) INGREDIENTS1 1/2 pounds ground beef 1 onion, chopped 1 red bell pepper, chopped 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste 1 cup water 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon chili powder 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar 3 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 8 hamburger buns, splitDIRECTIONS In a large skillet over medium-high heat, saute the ground beef for 5 minutes. Add the onion and red bell pepper; saute for 5 more minutes, or until onion is tender. Drain the fat. Mix in tomato paste and water, stirring until paste is dissolved. Stir in garlic, chili powder, paprika, cumin, vinegar, brown sugar, oregano, salt and pepper. Continue to heat for 5 to 10 minutes, or until mixture is thick. Go Butler...........win this hummer!!!!!!!!! I normally, don't post my basketball stuff not connected to Columbus, but this is Indiana College Basketball history. They are the Bulldogs and their school song is the same as North CHS. They are a very good team this year.Side Note: Number 1 Kansas got beat today, and I am excited that they went down. I am hoping a small team may finally win the NCAA tourney.

Here is a website you may want to check out. SPOKEO offers too much private information as far as I'm concerned. What your house is worth, where you live, what your annual income is, number of people living with you, and other info that no one really needs to know. You can have them remove this information. Butler V.S. Duke TonightLucas ComplexIndianapolis Indiana "Will The Dawg Keep His Bone?"The Butler bulldogs will face the Duke blue devils tonight in the NCAA Final Game. The winner will be this years NCAA National Champs. Butler is an Indiana and national favorite, but can they win over the power horse Duke? We will see starting around 9:21 PM EST tonight on CBS television channels. I have to admit Duke's program has always been my favorite because of coach K and the fact that his players graduate. I suspect that Butler has the same credentials with a very special coach and young intelligent players. Both teams have former Indiana high school players on the rosters. Butler has 10 players from Indiana, and Duke has two brothers from Indiana. Interesting that Hoosier land is being highlighted with the final game and many Hoosier raised players. Butler Should Be Proud & Hold Heads Up High
They played a terrific basketball game last night and controlled the game by super defense against Duke. There were actually two winners and they proved that they can play with any team in the nation. Many disappointing thoughts by fans nationally, but they are the "cream of the crop" this year.
Both these college teams have smart players on the floor and in the classrooms on campus.
FINAL SCORE: Duke 61 and Butler 59
