This Thread is for genealogy, and a search for ancestors. This area is set up so you can create your own Thread. Family name is preferrable when setting up your own Thread...

I am wondering if there are any of the Marshall Hacker family still living in Columbus. I believe he was a judge married to Julia Eldridge Hacker. They had five or six children, one my mother, and lived at 604 Franklin street. Maude married a John McCaslin and lived about a block down on Franklin. There was also one named Arthur who I think stayed in Indiana and had family there. I know the lovely ivy covered house is gone and that is sad to me. I have not heard about any of them in years but I have only happy memories of Columbus - I was born there!

In regard to the Judge Marshall Hacker family that I wrote about earlier, is there someone who could tell me how I could contact a place that could tell me about people there in the early 1900s or late 1800's? I am not very good at this but there must be some place that would have records of people living there then. I just need to know where to look. I am old myself now but would like to know if there is anyone left in Columbus who has any relation to them. I would really appreciate any advice anyone could give me. Thank you.

Welcome Jane, to the message boards. I will be the first to admit that I am NOT into genealogy, nor do I really know very much about 'researching.' I do know that at the Historic Columbus Indiana July 15th celebration the Bartholomew County Genealogical Society did have a display. I was so busy that day I basically can't say that I saw what they had to offer in the way of help. You might want to check out this website tho' as a start: www.indgensoc.org/counties/bartholomew.htmlSecondly, and I don't know your location in relationship to Columbus. With the capable assistance of a message board friend, thanks Richard, I was introduced to the Indiana Room at the Cleo Rogers Library in Columbus. For a fact I know that they had 'directories' going back at least as far as 1882-1883. Additionally, I found the librarians there to be a huge help. It seemed to me that there was a vast amount of information available, if you had a 'starting point.' Newspapers from the past are easily accessed via micro film. I also tapped into information at the county gov't offices, I believe in Records. And the ladies there were great in pointing you in the right directions. Wishing you success in your quest to find out about the Hacker family. I will admit that the little bit of research that I had time to do really opened up a lot of avenues to explore. And it is FUN. Enjoy. Nanc

;)I want to thank "Nanc" for anwering my message. I have not been able to find out much else. I did find his name in the 1903-1904 directory but that is it. I also know that the old home is now some kind of city office building, corner of 6th and Franklin. I am not much into this sort of thing either but since I'm now 83 just like to know if I still have relatives around there. This is my mother's family. I contacted my father's old home and got all kinds of info going all the way back to early 1800's and you are right, it was fun. I will contact the address you gave me and see if they have anything. Anyway, thanks so much to you. janelouadams@aol.com

Referencing my post # 134 in 'Trivia,' I think this is the best place to add a little bit more information. I keep telling myself, over and over, I am NOT 'into genealogy,' I really am NOT. However, the past couple of weeks I will admit that I am 'having a greater interest' as a result of that phone call, and several emails that have followed. My today's email offered 'something' that I had not found in some of my efforts to track down and verify ' family stories' that I have heard. For those of you doing genealogical work, you might like to check out this site which has some nearly 1000 gravesites in Garland Brook referenced. www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=85104&CScn=garland+brook&CScntry=4&CSst=17Hope that someone can make use of this info. For me, I found nothing new, but did include some photos of my mom's family plot. Nanc

Does anyone have information about Bernard Wayne Pennington who owned and ran the Pennington Music Co. in Columbus Indiana? I read that he had died in October 11th, 1994. I'm his daughter born in 1953 and he married my Mother Norma R. Emboden in 1952 in Indiana. The marriage didn't last and we moved, Mom and I, and lost all contact with him. If you can help me find an obituary or if you knew or saw him, a picture perhaps it would be a great help to me. I already tried asking his wife Alberta but she hung up on me. Thank You, Michelle Pennington-Italy

I am looking for Jacob Alexander Stewart he was born about 1875 and married Amanda Martin. They had several children one of which was my grandmother Clara Melvina Stewart who married Victor Effinger. If anyone has any information I would greatly appreciate it.

I MENTIONED IN THE BOOKS ABOUT BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY THAT I BOUGHT A BOOK ABOUT MAPS BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY IT WAS INTERESTING TO ME TO LOOK AT HISTORICAL RENDERINGS ABOUT AREAS OF MY ANCESTERS I AM ATTACHING A SAMPLE OF THE BOOK TO SHOW THE AREA THAT NANC , RER AND I HAD TALKED ABOUT PREVIOUSLY CONCERNING GARLAND BROOK CEMETERY. THE TWO ITEMS SHOW THE PEOPLE WHO PURCHASED THE LAND IN THE EARLY STAGES OF THE COUNTY THE MAPS ARE OF THE TOWNSHIP GARLAND BROOK IS IN THE SECTION 20 ON BOTH MAPS ARE OF THEN AND NOW YOU CAN SEE THE NAMES OF ANCESTORS ALL IN THE AREA I AM A RELATIVE OF THE LAMBERT FAMILY AND YOU CAN SEE AT THE TOP IS WHERE THE LAMBERT CEMETERY IS IN LOOKING AROUND THE AREA YOU CAN SEE GEORGE DOUP WAS A PROMINENT LAND OWNER BACK THEN

DAVID I BOUGHT THE BOOK I PUT A SAMPLE ON THE SITE SHOWING THE AREA WHERE GARLAND BROOK CEMETERY SINCE NANC HAD SAID SOMETHING ABOUT HER FAMILY OWNING SONE OF THAT LAND AND MY LAMBERT SIDE OF THE FAMILY OWNED THAT LAND I THINK. I'LL BE GLAD TO SEND COPIES OF PARTS BUT IT HAS 198 PAGES. BASICALLY IT HAS 3 MAPS OF EACH TOWNSHIP WITH ALPHA INDEX FOR EACH IT ALSO HAS CONSOLIDATED INDEX AT FRONT. IM NOT INTO COPYWRITE STUFF SO I DONT KNOW IF IM ALLOWED TO COPY IT COMPLETELY? I FOUND IT THRU A GOOGLE SEARCH THE .COM IS UNDERTHE BOOKS ABOUT COLUMBUS THREAD IF SOMEONE WOULD LIKE A CERTAIN TOWNSHIP I CAN SEND THAT IF ANYONE WANTS. MY SON HAS TO HELP ME SCAN BUT I COULD DO IT WHEN I CAN GET HIM TO HELP. WHEN I SCAN IT I DEFAULT UNDER 700 X BUT MOST PEOPLE SHOULD BE ABLE TO ZOOM IT TO READABLE SIZE. I FOUND THE BOOK THRU ARPHAX.COM IT COST ABOUT 33.00 INCLUDING S & Hjd, did you buy that book? is it for sale? myself as well as others on the board may want a copy. if so, can you provide more info about it? Thanks!

My Mother and her siblings "grew" up in the children's home there in Columbus. She really would not ever talk about it much. Other than they were taken there during the depression becasue my Grandmother couldn't take care of them. Her name was Jean Martha, a sister named Molly, a sister named Mary, a sister named Ann and a brother named George. I know that this is a real reach. But if anybody on here ever was there, it would be great to learn something about the life there.

I have been doing family history for about thirty years and my Bartholomew and Johnson county connection is the Crittenden family. I also have Tanner,Singer, Tucker,Henry and Johnson family connections in this area. This was the Richard Hazlewood Crittenden family.
