Chubby Checker's version of The Twist peaked at NUMBER 1 on the Billboard HOT 100 Charts week ending September 25, 1960. That same week, Hank Ballard's version hit number 28. It wouldn't climb any higher than that, but would remain on the charts longer than Chubby's version.
Hank Ballard wrote and recorded The Twist in 1958. The song was on the Vee Jay label and was the "B" side of Teardrops On Your Letter.
You can thank Dick Clark for having Ernest Evans re-record the song. Dick's wife gave Ernest his nom de plume and the world would forever know him as Chubby Checker. Chubby recorded The Twist in June 1959. He literally worked his tail off promoting the song and the dance (he stated he lost 30 pounds demonstrating the dance).
The Twist hit the Billboard Charts again in 1962, climbing to the number 1 slot in January.
During this time, 45's (jeez, I hope I don't have to explain what a 45 is/was) outsold albums. LP's of this time period were notorious for having one or two good tunes with the balance of the songs being crap, remakes, or throw-aways. Albums from the rock and roll era wouldn't begin to surpass the sale of 45's until the Beatles came along in 1964.
Most records could be purchased at one of the 5 and 10 cent stores along Washington Street, or:
Amp Records, 306 3rd Street (Gregg, do you know anything about AMP? I ran across a 45 recorded on the AMP label, stating it was recorded in Columbus Indiana). Berry's House Of Records, 1102 25th Street Tom Pickett's Music Center, 1126 25th Street

Hinkle Music House....
This is where my parents purchased my clarinet so that I could play in the CHS Band. Great people to work with, although I believe he scratched his head many a time while I was taking lessons....

So as not to confuse any alumni from the Class of 1960, let's keep all info regarding the event in this Thread. If the other 1960 reunion Thread is pretty much redundant to the info here, I think it best that it be deleted.
If not, those who posted in the other Thread may want to copy and paste their posts here if necessary.
The other 1960 Thread will be deleted in the next few days.
Thanks to all.

The 1960 Graduation Program At CHS50 Years Ago @ "Good Ole" CHS (May 25, 1960)Columbus Indiana Interesting History Comment On Program: It says 88th Commencement......well that means the the first was in year 1872 (136 Years As Of 2010).Brief: A special thanks to my deceased Father that kept this program that I found many years later. He was a very historic and thoughtful person. You don't have to look in the LOG for who graduated, because it is all here. Further, you will see the top students in the Class up front. Some top students may be a mis-print and were not tops in the class. Additional Comment: This is a long post but a large 1960 Class of great folks and friends. Comment: I hope the 1960 Class members enjoyed seeing this historic program from the class. Sorry about the check mark but my farther checked my name.

History of CHS Senior Cords (skirts & pants)A repeat of a October 2, 2007 post herein Columbus Indiana Note: Due to a few folks asking me about the history of the CHS senior cords, I will provide what I know about the subject.Senior Cords History: The CHS Senior Cords skirts and men's pants started during the Classes of 1954-1955 and ended around 1969. The tradition was popular among many high schools throughout the state of Indiana. The tradition was that a Junior could only wear his or hers on the last day of their Junior year as the seniors were departing. Of course they wore them if they had them ready for that day. The next year the tradition was to wear them on Fridays of each week, but many wore them daily. Some students refused to wash them much, but that is another story. The material referred to as "cords" was corduroy, which is a heavy ribbed fabric. The color utilized was light yellow. The tradition is no longer with the schools but was a different tradition that most enjoyed. During late year 1959 I painted my own cords (not the greatest artist that is for sure) and many other fellow students' cords. In fact students that I ran around with in Franklin Indiana asked me to paint their skirts and pants. I only charged mostly for the paint tubes that were used because it cost almost $6 or $7 in paint to complete the skirt or pants. The ink was indelible from tube pens bought at the Nagel Book and art/paint stores on Washington Street. Final: This post is a summary of a couple posts I made during the year 2007. It is appropriate to repeat it with the pending class reunion this summer. The last picture is from the 1959 Log; inside Neal Paint Store. The paint for the cords was called Tri Chem ballpoint point tabe paint. The ladies in the picture could not be identified.

1960 Classmate Pat Hayworth Picture With John F. KennedyCan anymore faces in this group be identified with the then future President of the United States? Pat Hayworth is in the front below Kennedy in this picture. "It was 50 years ago today that then-Sen. John F. Kennedy, D-Mass., looked down on a large crowd of admirers at the Don Thompson farm near Waynesville during a visit to the area while campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination. There is an ongoing conversation among 1960 graduates and they are trying to come up with more names in the picture. Source: Republic archives and today's Republic April 29, 2010
