Making me more sad when I see that the white covering has been ripped off the semi-circular seating upstairs. There was nothing wrong with that seating a couple years ago.

Wonderful pictures; thanks so much to Bob, Richard, Rhonda and whoever else has shared their pictures on the boards. The musty smell kept me from going back to the Crump this year because a few years ago when we toured the Crump I just couldn't breathe so I had to leave. So glad that we have these pictures to look at. :-)
Rhonda, the blue upholstery underneath the white covering looks in good shape. Wonder when the white was put over it? Suppose they are planning to completely remove the white? Did anyone think to ask Rovene when they toured what they were doing on those semi circular seats?
Thanks again to all who've posted their pictures! :-)

There has been a lot of senseless vandalism taking place...done by a tiny percentage of Rovenne's "kids" who are now the primary patrons of the Crump. They are an odd-looking bunch but are a generally well behaved group of young people. They have come to feel that the Crump is "their place" much like another generation I've met felt the same way about the Jive Kennel! Without those kids using the building for their frequent concerts the Crump might already be shuttered and facing the wrecking ball again. I just wish they had the wisdom to realize what's happening...unfortunately wisdom is rare no matter what our age might be If there is ever a proper restoration of the Crump almost everything is going to need replaced/recreated anyway. There is no plan for anything like that in the immediate future. The Crump needs a "savior" with deep-pockets willing to save a piece of Columbus history. It could very well be used and shared by the City Band, The Columbus Symphony, The Philharmonic, the Mill Race Players and others. We need advocates for the Crump to speak up at the Mayors meetings, at the City Council, to the Heritage Fund and to the various groups who could help. If you have a millionare in the family hit her up for a few bucks! Save the Crump!

Does anyone know if John Mellencamp when he was still John Cougar played his first show at the Crump? Thanks!

I've wanted to get these pictures posted for some time now and have finally found the time. John Mellencamp came back to the Crump Theatre on September 23, 2008 and performed a show for an upcoming A&E show entitled something like "Back To Their Roots." I went down to the Crump that afternoon and saw Rovene. She allowed me inside to take some photos. I was happily surprised by the way the old place looked! Rovene and the volunteers truly did the place proud! Here are some of the photos:

Here are some of the interior shots I took while the band did a sound check. Note the decorative images where the box seats used to be. Rovene recreated these from the original images that so many of us remember from years gone by...

And, for those paranormal enthusiasts who truly believe the Crump is haunted, all of the interior pics I took that day show orbs (although these were most likely caused by the lighting).

And last, but by no means least, I was contacted by the production company that shot the Mellencamp show and they want to use some of the pictures from the Crump Theatre history webpage in their A&E television special.
I sent hi-rez images of those they requested this morning.

David, So glad to see you are feeling well enough to post and what wonderful pictures. How did the Crump Theater smell inside? Last time I was inside would've been at our 50th CHS class reunion and the mold was so bad I had to leave. That would've been over five years ago. I could not tolerate the odor. I hope that has been cleared up and if it has I would love to see inside the theater again. We used to go to the "midnight show", I believe it was Friday or Saturday nights. I used to think the ladies room upstairs, and those huge pilars and the seats that circled them was like being on a movie set. As a small child I liked to pretend I was "someone special" and we would sit at the mirrors and comb our hair or pretend we were applying lipstick, etc. Thanks so much for these wonderful glimpses into what the theater looks like now and it's so good to see you back here posting. Everyone has missed you!

Babs, thank you. It feels good to be back. It's been a busy summer.
I didn't notice any mold smell inside. Maybe they got rid of that (sure hope so!).
It was really great to see the inside looking as good as it does. I know it still needs alot of work, but just seeing everything took me right back to childhood. I was alot like you, Babs. I always felt special when I got my ticket and walked through those wonderful interior doors. The ticket taker stood to the left. His job was to tear your ticket in half. And what with the columns and the carpet and painted walls, it all gave me a special feeling inside.
By the way, the Crump looks very similar to the way it did in the 50's and 60's, only there used to be an aisle that ran down the middle. I don't know when they did away with that and added seating.
That Mellencamp day was surely a fun day. I stood in front of the stage so I could video the Proclamation. Wanda Hunter showed up and we talked for a good hour about things.
It truly was a great day...

Mike stopped by tonight and dropped this picture off. It's an interesting one, for sure. The two ladies are, from left to right, Violet Hawkins and Marilyn Sears. The picture was taken in September, 1938 in front of Miller + Yarling's Ice Cream Store. Across the street, you can see part of what the Crump Theatre looked like in 1938. This would have been 3 years before the 1941 remodel that added the vitrolite front. Does anyone remember this ice cream place? Mike's mom, Violet, worked there in high school. I think she was 17 years old when this picture was taken.
