Please leave any pictures and memories of Columbus Indiana gas stations here.

Last night, for the first time, I watched American Restoration. I think that's the name of the tv show.
Last night's show centered around a guy who brought in a push cart that was once used to hold and dispense gasoline. He wanted to have it completely restored. If I recall correctly, the push cart held 60 gallons of gas. The story goes that a person pushed this cart around town and filled up cars. It was made out of metal, which looked like it was heavy in its own right, and I can't imagine the weight after adding 60 gallons of gas to the cart!
I wonder if these were ever used in Columbus. Or, do you think they were more a product for bigger cities? Or possibly, smaller towns that had no gas station? I want to learn more about the use of these push carts.

Here is a picture I received from Keith and Karyn Konetzka. I don't think I've ever posted this picture before. I wish I could enlarge this picture, but since it was scanned at 150 dpi, it would turn out too pixelated if I tried. I don't remember these Phillips 66 signs. Does anyone know where this station was located? Love that greenish/bluish car by the gas pump! Is that a Merc? (I've been watching the Mecum auto auctions too much! LOL)

Is this the same Phillips 66 gas station as the one posted prior? It looks different to me. (from Keith and Karyn Konetzka) Jackson Street?

David, we watch that show and saw that gas cart, I had never heard of such a thing, ha ha , I bet they had a hard time finding attendance for that thing. We enjoy the show very much, also the Pickers is very good. In one of your posts you mentioned a gas station at State and McKinley, I do remember there being one there, and just east of there on State St was a station ran by a man named Humes, and on the corner of State and Cherry was a Gulf station, Fleetwoods I believe, this being in the early 60's.

George, regarding that Texaco gas station picture in post #4, it may not be Columbus. There were a couple of pictures in the Konetzka collection that were from other cities. I think I posted this in the 1950s Thread. I'll check it out tomorrow and see if we were able to locate it.

David, I just can't seem to place the Texaco station, maybe it was located else where, yes, please let us know if you do find the location. The cars in the picture are a good indication of the time period.

Jack's Gulf Station Located at 935 8th Street & California intersection Jack's was open during the 1940s and early 1950s and offered like all stations then, full service on the fill up. He provided maintenance, lub and oil. Jack's was not far from the 5th Street kids group near Union, and our home at that time. Bicycle tires, footballs and basketballs (if you had one of these) were mostly aired at Jack's. Of course he sold pop and small bagged Chesty potato chips, and nuts in glassed dispenser. Jack closed the station in the 1950s and retired not far from our family on 13th Street. Many kids used the air dispenser at Jack's and of course Jack would help the old and young when the airing of tires were needed. Gulf Built Standard Looking Facilities & This Looks Like Jack's Gulf:Comment: This is a repost of my March 7, 2007 from Triva. George should remember this one near his home also.

Looks like the roof of the Cerealine building sticking up on the left in the Texaco photo. That would make George's location correct!

2nd picture was at 5th and Jackson, picture looks like it was taken from south side of 5th street "Leo Ryan's Standard Oil Station". Harrison Ford was across the street. Some other stations Hoosier Pete on 3rd street, Tucker's Gulf also on 3rd, Lucas at State and Reo not sure of brand. Otto Gaten Texaco a block east on State,

I sure do remember it Bob, stopped there many times in the early 50 's for gas. I also washed my cars there many times, Jack would let us use the wash room and his soap and towels for 50 cents. Jack was a fine person and took excellent care of his customers.

And another from Keith and Karyn Konetzka: That is the TEXACO station which was located on the northwest corner of Second and Jackson. It had originally been an Indiana Refining Company station (one of the first service stations in town) and became a TEXACO when The Texas Company acquired The Indian in 1931. My Dad (who was the TEXACO distributor for many years) and Uncle were partners in running this station (as well as the "TEXACO Grill", which was located on the "US31 By-Pass") for some time after the Second World War.

Here's a picture which is currently for sale on eBay. The fellow who has it says that it is marked "Columbus, Ind." at the bottom, and was taken around Christmas time, 1926. Can anyone place this store? I'm thinking either somewhere on Jackson Street or, maybe, the north side of Eighth Street west of Jackson. After further review, I'm almost wondering if it was this station which sat at the northwest corner of 5th and Jackson. The canopy was removed, and some other remodeling done, but it does look similar.
