Yes, Nancy, Our Reunion was a great success !! The Weather was fine, the goldf tournament went great, and it was so neat to see the article in the paper on Monday morning! I wish it had been in Sunday's paper, so all the Classmates could see it before they left Columbus. However, it was a great article, and if you care to see a copy of it I will post it in the CHS Class of '55 Reunion Folder. We packed the Shriner's Club on Friday night , and again at the Harrison Lake Country Club on Saturday night. Lots of impromptu poker games, and a great Sunday Brunch hosted by Sally Swope Flint, that I was unable to attend. I also wanted to let you know we have 2 classmates in Columbus Regional Hospital that were unable to make it due to surgeries. Please keep John McMahan and Betty Hollenbeck Heath in your prayers. They both will be in the Hospital for a while. Also, I heard by way of Dave Mihay, that Bob Weldy in Naples ,Fl had a stroke, and was unable to attend, also. Will write more later but am out of time for now... Blessings, Margo

CHS Class of 1955 celebrates reunion
By Chrissy Nethercutt cnethercutt@therepublic.com
The last time Steve Schwaninger saw some of his classmates, a trip to the theater cost 10 cents, jive dancing was all the rage and everyone in Columbus ate at The Greeks.
“It sure doesn’t seem like it’s been 50 years,” he said.
Schwaninger, president of the Columbus High School Class of 1955, was one of more than 120 who came back to town this weekend for the 50th reunion.
As graduates began rolling into town Thursday, impromptu golf outings, dinners and euchre tournaments brought together old friends.
Bernie Kress, who drove from Florida, met several former classmates for breakfast Friday morning and said the stories flowed until he had tears running down his face.
“I feel like a little kid being back here,” he said. “I can honestly say (high school) was the best time in my life.”
Jack Larrison of Newburgh said in addition to the 1950s being a great time for students, it also was a great time for the high school, which later was named North.
Larrison remembered donating $10, which bought one brick, to the new high school gymnasium fund.
He also remembered how “great” the building looked when it was done.
“We were the first class to graduate there, and that made us so proud,” he said.
Shirley Lyster, who began teaching English at the high school in 1952, said she donated a week’s salary to the project and still feels like a seat in the gym is hers.
Lyster, in her first year of retirement from the high school, laughed and said her first years teaching in the early 1950s were some of the most “interesting” of her career.
She remembers students, including Schwaninger and Kress, hiding her notes behind the classroom radiator, lining the exterior of her home with candy canes one winter and hiding in her bushes as she came home from dates.
“But they were great kids,” she said. “I really liked them and they really liked me.”
Lyster, who attended this weekend’s reunion, said she has stayed in touch with many members of the class of 1955 and enjoyed learning what they have done with their lives.
“It makes you very proud to see these students and all they’ve accomplished,” she said. “It puts you in awe.”
Schwaninger said while he enjoys catching up with his friends about their lives since high school, “it’s more fun to talk about the things we did, and the things we shouldn’t have done.”
Janet Owen, who still lives in Columbus, agreed and said the best part about the reunion was the “remember when” stories.
“It certainly doesn’t make you feel like you’re 68,” she said with a chuckle. “Well, until you look in a mirror again.”

Classmate recalls era’s ‘best of times’
Editor’s note: The following are the recollections of Bernie Kress, Columbus High School Class of 1955.
I doubt if I see many of you after this reunion, so I present you with these few, but sincere, memories.
This was the best of times, and I have no regrets. Everyone was my friend and I, theirs. Perhaps I saw everything through rose-colored glasses, but to me, my classmates were perfect people in a perfect place at a perfect time.
I remember the hay rides and bonfires at the Swopes. My first real date, all wrapped up in blankets.
The Bob-o-link. Denny’s and The Greeks. Fish sandwich at Carmichaels.
The hot dog contest at A&W that I could never win. Driving around town just to be doing it. Waving at all the girls and hoping there was a party somewhere.
The Jive Kennel where you could meet anybody worth meeting at all.
Those many trips to Harrison Lake, Brown County and every back road in the county and writing my name on the basement wall at the Everys.
The Rio, Mode and Crump, where 25 cents would entertain you for hours.
Donner Park and the swim meets I never won and the summer days spent laying on a towel and splashing the girls or playing cards with the “Crew.”
The prom nights and the Four Freshmen. Jumping a curb and damaging my dad’s new car and never admitting it.
Skinny dipping in Haw Creek at Rocky Ford.
Swiping a cherry pie from the trophy case.
Those days paved the way to my tomorrow. I still cherish them and the words of our Alma Mater in my mind, and still see our world as a perfect place to be.
Bernie Kress, your classmate of 1955.

Notes from some of the classmates about our Reunion... Margo
Margo, Sandy and I want to thank you for all that you and the rest of the people on the committees did, to make our 50th very special. We know that a lot of time effort was given. We did have a wonderful time and we really enjoyed seeing so many of our classmates again. I started to say old classmates but thought better of it. We appreciate your sending us the Republic and Columbus links. I thought the picture of you and Steve was very good, but couldn't figure out who that was in the middle. We are looking forward to the next one. Thanks Again, Jack and Sandy Larrison
******************* TNX for note and the GREAT work you and the planning committee did. Tell them, and I believe I speak for the entire Class of '55, that they did a goooood job and should be soooo proud!!!
Good to see you too! ...... Charlie Ostick ****************************************************
Margo

Update on Betty Hollenbeck Heath. She is currently in Four Seasons Rehabilitation Center on Taylor Road, Rm # 207. Please send a card to help cheer her up, if you can. John McMahan is now home, and so is Bob Weldy in Naples, Fl. If anyone has email addresses for the CHS Class of '55 would you please send them to me privately in a message? Thanks and Blessings, Margo

I can't believe it's been this long since I posted any information about our class on this site. WOW !! I noticed all the visits to our Class folder..over 2,500 !! I think we are the only Class from CHS that still meets each month of the year. I am also in contact with a lot of our members who live out of town, or out of state. We have had several class members celebrating 50th Wedding Anniversaries throughout the year. Great to see each one of them in the Sunday newspaper. I think it says a lot about the integrity, and commitment of our class members. Sadly, I will not be one of them,as my husband, Bill, passed away before our 44th. The location for our monthly LUNCH BUNCH meeting has changed. We still meet the THIRD SAT. OF EACH MONTH at 11:30 am. We have moved to the Elks Lodge and Dining Room on Ray Boll Blvd, close to the local airport. They have a large round table, big enough for us all to gather around it. We share pics, from High School, or Grade Schools , and most recently the Flood. Several members were caught on one side of town and could not get back to their homes. Thankfully, no one sustained much damage. There is always a different crowd each month, as not everyone can make it everytime. We invite other members of our Class to join us for a great time. We order off of the menu, and they usually have two lunch specials for $5.99. Some of us just get their soup, or a coke. Come and join us on July 19th, if you can. Mark it on your calendar now,so you won't forget. Questions contact me at my email addy, please. Hope to see you there... Margo Mc Calip Hughey CHS Class of'55

This is a note to all of Margo's friends. I talked with her today and she is not well. Very weak and low physically, but still up spiritually. Those who will, let your prayers go up for her, and let her know by a note you care if you can. She is a precious Christian lady, and in need of our strength now. My, I did not realize it had been so long since I posted to this site. Doing fairly well, and keeping up my battle ( over 9 years, now) with the "Big C". Thanks so much for all of your prayers. They mean a lot to me. I have retired so many times, I'm tired of being retired!!
Just a gentle reminder that the CHS Class of 1955 still gets together once a month,at 11:30 am for brunch, ALWAYS the third Sat. We are now meeting at the Elks Dining Room, located on Ray Boll Blvd, out by the Airport. ANY MEMBER of the class is welcome to attend. We all order off the menu, some for soup, a salad, or myself a breakfast item. I believe we are the only class from CHS that still does this monthly. For our Aug. 15th get together we will be celebrating birthdays of Harriet Tirtel Dillman, Dianne Meneely Bradley, and Wanda Harris. Come and join us, if you wish. We always have a different crowd each month, so never know who will show up. If you have any questions you may send me a private email... CO-O-O-O-O- ........

Dear Richard or David, Not sure whether to place this here, or on the Main High School Folder. Please move if you feel it's neccessary..... The CHS Class of 1955 wll have their September Brunch on SAT. SEPT 26th at 11:30 am. This time ONLY we will be meeting at "The Greeks" .We are hoping other 1955 Class members that we do not have contact info for, will hopefully see this and join us. I believe we are the only Class that still gets together once a month, to chat, and catch up on family events. So, if you know a Class member that does not have computer access would you please advise them of the change for this month, only. We have already had our first meeting for our 55th Reunion next year ! Cannot believe it's been that long... Where did all that time Fly to ? Hope to see you there....
