Thanks, Rod, for all the wonderful photos and articles you have been sharing. Know that many will enjoy your efforts. What really amazes me----------because I do check the message boards every day unless I am out of town with no computer access--------this 'County Stadium' thread is one that I totally had missed. Duh!!!!! Thanks, Rod. Nanc

Starting with the Future Home of the Playmakers picture all stories and pictures are from the 1973-1977 years. We all had a great time and each girl has their own story to tell. I know when I got to meet the old Playmakers that was in the upto date picture it was really neat. I only wish I could get togeather with all of the players and coaches as 33 + years have gone by. Shehan softball architect
Source Republic September 17, 1998 By Jim Small
When the Cubbies and the Rainbow Warriors took the field last Sunday at County Stadium. I doubt if any of the girls noticed that Diamond No. 1 is named in honor of Pete Shehan.
The Rainbow Warriors are aptly named. During one shift in the field the girls wore the following colored jerseys, by position:
Catcher, navy: pitcher, teal: first, silver: second, red: short, red: third, white: left, purple: center, maroon: right-center, green: and right, white.
The Cubbies wear blue shirts with red numbers.
The Warriors were no match for the Cubbies Sunday. Daughter Vanessa said she thought the score was 19-1.
I didn't check with "official" scorekeeper Bob Wissman.
Barton did us in.
Kaitlyn Barton plays second (and other positions) for the Warriors. She single-handedly wiped out the Cubbies one inning, catching a pop-up and doubling a runner off second then covering first on a bunt play and making the putout.
Our pitching was strong and the final result was never in doubt, but the uneventful game yielded some excitement for the Smalls when Vanessa took a ground ball to the mouth and had a tooth knocked out.
Her main concern was over losing the tooth--as in not being able to find it.
In this league, she's one of the youngest players (a third-grader, and one of our pitchers is in grade 8).
Although she has made contact at times, she collected her first hit in her next at-bat.
However, we're not recommending she lose a tooth every time she wants a hit.
In the beginning
Shehan and Rod Eliot (his name is on Diamond 2) got the ball rolling on the county softball diamonds in 1972.
Eliot owned the Ponderosa here until he sold it and moved to Arizona.
The two did most of the behind-the-scenes work that got the first diamond constructed.
Then the county took over the facility, including financial responsibility.
County Stadium has since grown to include four diamonds, restroom and a concession stand, which Pete says will be replaced with a new one soon.
The Keith Wellman "plaque" that was on Diamond 3 (where youth baseball plays a lot of games) fell off. The fourth diamond doesn't have a name on it yet.
I could recommend two guys--either Wissman or Ed loweth, who spends more time at County than just about anybody.
He helps the coaches, scouts players and encourages everyone.
