"Barns of Bartholomew County"This barn has it's own unique character, and is located east of Columbus near the town of Hartsville.

What with all the really neat photos of barns, Bob-----------the one I remember was 'the Mobely (sp) barn' out of town aways, in what direction---------am clueless. For some reason, the word 'mule' sticks in my mind. Help!!!! I'm a real blank, other than remembering the barn sitting in amongst some trees fairly near the ? road!!!! Nanc

Nanc, I don't recall the Mobely barn, but do remember the unique Crump barn on Rocky Ford Road as you drove toward the Air Base gate. It was on the left and it had it's own character and so did the house. It seemed the house never got finished by the carpenters.

A correction!!
The sculpture that looks like two red "c's" is NOT by Cesar Pelli. It is by Bernar Venet, and is called "Two Arcs de 212.5 degrees" and was done in 1987.
Cesar Pelli was the principal architect of the Commons and Commons Mall done in 1973.
My tour guide training was good for something! =)

Nanc, I'm taking a stab at this barn question of yours and will say the barn was East of town and probably North as well. I think it could've been near what used to be called "the Mobley curves" as you head towards Harstville?
These dangerous curves have been replaced by a new highway 46 that now gives you a more gentle curve and not those horrible sharp ones that used to be there.
Anyone have more details on her query about the "Mobley barn"?

Santa won't be as prevalent in the Commons Mall this upcoming holiday season as the old bearded one has been in past years. In fact, he won't arrive until the Saturday after Thanksgiving. His only other scheduled date is the following Saturday after that, and that's going to be it.
It's going to be sort of sad this year with Zaharako's closed up. I'm going to miss it, as will my kids. Visiting Zaharako's at Christmas time was a tradition, and with that, this thought will be continued in the Zaharako Thread!

Nanc Nancs, I believe Babs is correct. The Mobley Curves was/is on State Route 46 near the Mobley Homestead! On July 25, 1985, Landon Turner, Indiana University basketball star had an accident on that curve that left him paralyzed from the chest down and ended his playing career. See www.landonturner.com Bio, for more information. The curve is between one and two miles west of Hartsville and just west of the bridge over Fall Fork. The Anderson Falls is on that stream/creek and as a side note, it flows north! The following, is from an e-mail that you, I and our friend Charlie had on July 12, 2005. Is this the ‘Mule’ connection? I know Wm Mobley went under as he bought mules for the army in WW 1 and when the war was over he had thousands of mules he had bought for the army and they did not need them any more and that also dropped the price real fast so he was stuck.

Columbus is in the "news" again. Today's Republic has a short blurb on the front page about an upcoming tv special on DISH TV, Gallery HD channel on November 16th. The show is called "Artland USA" and will highlight some architecture in town. The show was recorded by a British-American tv crew this Summer.
If you have DISH TV be sure and watch for it. If I read any further information, I will try and post here. (No time was listed for the show as of now.)

Thanks Richard, I wasn't sure this was the barn in question but I did know about "Mobley curves" so took a stab that it might all be connected.
We did drive 46 through this area on Saturday and the curves are still there but not like they used to be.
Thanks for the verification. :-)

Babs, I do believe that the Mobley barn was located on the S-E corner of 25th and Cherry St. The barn was taken down for the new Big Boy restaurant.

Below is from the Twenty-fifth Street listing in the 1953 Book. Cherry ends se corner William H. Mobley & Son (livestock)

George, I had no idea where the barn was located, I really didn't. I was just bringing up the subject of Mobley curves and thinking perhaps the barn could've been located out of town someplace.
Thanks for the clarification for Nanc and anyone else I may have misled by my mention of "the curves".

Okay everyone, Today is election day, so "GET OUT THERE AND CAST YOUR VOTE". I've heard people say "if you don't vote you don't have any right to criticize the administration"...................so do your part, be a good citizen and make your voice heard.
Whether you are Republican or Democrat, go to the polls and cast your vote!!!!!!!!!!!
