Something I wrote in 1992...
salutations!
suns up
tickling the windows
seeds of dreams stuck in eyes
dads already left for work
but the old spice lingers on
salutations!
rice krinkles and mr green jeans
milk goatee down my chin
mom does laundry in the kitchen
feeding ringer clothesfood
it bumps and chugs
makes squeaky noises
i'm MUCH more quiet than it
salutations!
shorts and striped tee shirt
pjs stuffed under pillow
shoebox full of baseball cards
with doubles in pocket for trading
salutations!
grass lingers wet
licks at my red ball jets
i jump off back porch
sideyard running green
quiet shades in morning shadows
sun sneaks a peek underneath as
dairy truck makes its rounds
it rumbles on down center street
salutations!
dallas is out
heard back door slam over there
he's such a funny looking kid
with those massive glasses
elastic band around his head
keeps his eyes from falling out
i joke to myself
knowing full well
he is my best friend
salutations!
dallas wears his thoughts
on his face
as well as remains of toast and jam
he has a poll parrot clicker
he's dressed like me
he'll let me click it for a fee
salutations!
boys on the prowl
at the side of his house
mason jar sits
quiet wide-mouthed waiting
praying mantis anticipating
salutations!
mom lugs the laundry out
i flip the fence
dallas throws me the jar
our catch of the day
stands still in the grass
mandibles resting on the glass
salutations!
mom eyes our morning endeavor
wearing scarf around her hair
wooden clothespin between her lips
we're headed to the railroadtracks
i shout
be back in time for lunch
she insists
salutations!
transistor radio at my side
roger w morgan in the morning
big boss temp sits shy of skyhigh
brian seals it with a kiss
salutations!
world transformed
straight from COMBAT!
rusty rail mark our trail
weapons on alert
as we step across the ties
iron bridge we're headed for
hanging in the distance
never get there by lunch i scream
as mortar fire erupts
we're pinned down
mattel machine gun at my side
cover me
dallas screams
jumps up and fights the tide
salutations!
wish we had a bottle of coke
they're ice cold at russells grocery
sitting so tempting
in that red and yellow coke machine
suns climbing high and hot
time out
halfway to the bridge
shade at the graveyard
its the oldest in town
supposedly haunted
as some see things
dallas drinks from his canteen
wipes his mouth just like on tv
salutations!
shirts off and tied around waist
suns doing its crispy critter best
we search for date nails
on the walk back
iron bridge ran out of time
salutations!
lunch is ready
wipe your feet
wash those hands
right down to the bone
speed limit 25
to the bathroom
salutations!
its kickball outside
interrupted by lunch
he's always a pain
its debbie's turn
and i'm on second
salutations!
lunch went over
to the palmers
they deserve him
all afternoon long
mr palmer doesnt come out
cept to yell at us
and sometimes keep our ball
salutations!
tomato soup grape koolaid
stains on my shirt
ears flapping in the breeze
i run out the back door
everybodys waiting
as i flip over the fence
i'm the one on second
salutations!
its fudgesicle time
and shade in front yard
too hot in the empty lot
heats kicked the very breath
right out of us
time to climb trees
salutations!
bikes decked out in papermache
balloons and streamers parade
marks in soft black puddles
melt away in the heat of the day
july and my oh my
school is so far away
salutations!
grab the 45 record changer
put it on the back porch
and plug it in
time to twist and hula-hoop
kool aid afternoon with cookies
snacks and grape mustaches
salutations!
state street school
looks so different
from a summer perspective
tetherball and knockhockey
foursquare and jump rope
that egg carton game with marbles
salutations!
dads home from work
gets a quick hello
and glance from the marbles
i smell chicken and bisquits
under the grape vine
its my turn to shoot
salutations!
dinners on the tables
yells from back doors
set off an pattern
plays through the neighborhood
answered back
with slamming screen doors
salutations!
laundrys flapping in the breeze
my back is warmed by sun
chicken smothered with lots of gravy
and jelly bisquit to the side
milk gulped down in record time
back out the door we fly
salutations!
horseshoes in the foundry dirt
talk of what's on tv tonight
its friday night and dads payday
dont get dirty
we're going grocery shopping in an hour
dallas has to go in now
i flop over the fence and bug my sister
salutations!
we're in the car headed for Marsh
all the neat toys above the produce
i throw stuff in the cart
only to have mom take it out
moms the one who does the shopping
dad just pushes the cart
salutations!
groceries in the trunk
i sit behind dad in the back
as the day sits on the edge
of night and balances awhile
at least long enough to get home
and load the table with bags
salutations!
its officially nighttime
tv comes on for the first time today
its friday night in 62
rawhide at 7:30
flintstones at 8:30
twilight zone at ten
only an hour and 15 minutes til selwin
salutations!
everyones in bed
i sit in the living room
with all the lights out
tv flashing dull and bright
casting its eerie glow
i sit right there
in front of the tv
popbottle to my right
potato sticks to my left
its THEM! tonight for my very first time
in that glorious black and white
salutations!
i'm getting sleepy
stretched out the day
as far as i possibly could
its dark in the house
as i feel my way to bed
thoughts of giant ants
and wonders of what
tommorrow will shed
suns up
tickling the windows
seeds of dreams stuck in eyes
dads already left for work
but the old spice lingers on
salutations!
rice krinkles and mr green jeans
milk goatee down my chin
