While I had out my uncle's account of 'His Life and Times,' (John Hughes, CHS 1924, soon to be 102) I found some rather interesting information. Soon after graduating in 1924, he was seeking 'something to do,' and someone urged him to buy a hamburger stand that was for sale in the downtown area of Columbus. A good friend loaned him the money, and he managed 'to make expenses' for about a year, someone (?) came along and wanted to buy 'the stand' and he sold it for enough to pay off his loan. It was then that he went to work for the shirt factory. Apparently the shirt factory job did not pay as well as Cummins Engine Company, and a friend, Don Cummins, suggested making a job change, and was willing to teach my uncle how to run a screw machine, a job that needed a man. He relates that------he was one of those who continued to work during their move from the old building, across the railroad tracks from the station, (which, at the time he wrote this account, was a museum,) to the new east side location which was the beginning of their present location. I can see now that I have more to add to my list of 'Things to Do in Columbus!' Where in the world did he sell hamburgers??? So many stories that one can find to explore and research. Nanc

Evelyn Seward Columbus High School (CHS) TeacherNancs and I have been talking through email about Ms. Seward. She was a wonderful language and journalism teacher at CHS for many years. She taught a lot of my friends Latin during the middle 1950s. Research indicates she started at CHS in 1931 as a French, Latin and Journalism teacher. She may have retired from teaching around 1964. Question: Does anyone know if there is a relationship of the Seward Clothing Company posted above in the Log of 1924? Ms. Seward was supposed to be in the CHS graduating Class of 1925 according to Nancs and the 1925 Log, but she graduated early during the year of 1924. We welcome your knowledge and comments about Evelyn Seward and her background. Formal Education: Butler University A.B., University of Michigan M.A, Indiana University, and University of Grenoble France 1932 CHS Teacher Picture 1956 Teacher CHS

Thanks Bob, for posting about Miss Seward. As per the emails Bob mentioned, I had Miss Seward for Latin my freshman year at CHS, and the second year until we moved in late 1952. The one thing that I vividly recall her saying that she would really like to live until the year 2000. As I recall, she didn't quite make that. Somewhere within my memory bank lurks something about a connection to the Seward Company, as Bob mentions. IF you have never visited the Bartholomew County Historical Society, you really should. Upstairs in the library, one will find just vast amounts of information, in some cases rather deeply buried. In April 2007, my daughter, Paige, and I did find, as we explored the library contents, a cupboard that was filled with scrapbooks kept by Miss Seward, the other half of that cupboard had documents by Laura Long. For those of you close enough to do 'some exploring' I suspect that much could be discovered via these scrapbooks. Unfortunately, with Bob on the east coast, and me on the west coast, we can't do much. Hope that someone else will take the ball and do some research. We'd love to have 'the rest of the story,' and another piece of a puzzle put in place. Get involved. It is a lot of fun!!!!!!!!!! Nanc

The Seward Company Clothing Store Year 1924 Hart Schaffer & Marx ClothesWashington Street Columbus Indiana According to the directory information, The Seward Company store was owned by R.A. Seward and J.L. Schwartzkopf. It was originally at 410 Washington (in the address where Wildflowers Floral Shop currently resides - between the Heartland Center and Papa's Deli) from about 1907 untill 1923 when it moved to 417 Washington where this picture is from. It looks like it was in business untill about 1934 when G.C. Murphy expanded into the 417 address. The Seward store location is now occupied by SIHO insurance services.

Thanks, Ricky-------------and 'must be,' given the very limited resource materials at my finger tips. According to my 1952 phone directory, I see Robert A. Seward listed as living at 628 Lafayette. Altho' do not know the exact address of where Miss Seward lived, that address is about the location of her home, as it is on the west side of the street between 6th and 7th. So am 'thinking' that there is a relationship there connecting Miss Seward to Seward Clothing Company. Let's take it one step farther---------Miss Seward's Lafayette St. home, according to info I was told, was donated to the BCHS by Miss Seward, and not too long ago featured on the BCHS home tour, after some extensive rennovation. For a long time, info about the homes featured on these tours was on the BCHS website. However, now, that info is not on the internet for viewing. Inserting Just found, via an internet search, about the above mentioned home tours, a link, unfortunately not active, BUT did in the brief description of same----the mention of 'Hallie Seward.' From that, I did a Bartholomew County Archive search, and found that Robert A. Seward married Hallie Brown on December 29, 1907. So it 'seems' the dates would pretty much fit.Thinking outloud here, perhaps within the home tour description of Miss Seward's home, one would find additional information connecting it altogether to make a 'whole picture.' To glean this information, it would probably be as simple as contacting Michelle at the BCHS. Having talked at length with Michelle in April 2007, I believe that for a period of time she lived in the home in question, and................we'd have our answer via her. Oh, this is fun!!!!!!!!!!! I have some notes at home about the house but I'm pretty sure Miss Evelyn Seward and her mother lived in houses side by side on Lafayette Street. I'm assuming her father probably was R.A. Seward of the Seward store. I'll do a bit more digging later Robert and Haillie Seward are buried in City Cemetary: SEWARD, HALLIE - HORN & PFEIFER ADDITION LOT 28 WEST BURIAL NOVEMBER 25, 1959 SEWARD, ROBERT - HORN & PFEIFER ADDITION LOT 28 WEST BURIAL APRIL 12, 1951 Their daugter Miss Evelyn Seward died 8 May 1993 at the age of 83. She taught at Columbus High School for 41 years. Evelyn Seward grew up in the house at 628 Lafayette and willed the property to the Bartholmew County Historical Society upon her death.

Aha!!!!!!!!! And within a 24 hour span of time, with the able assistance of the 'Three Rs,' Robert/Bob, Ricky, and Richard, I believe that indeed, the question posed regarding CHS teacher, Miss Evelyn Seward's connection to the Seward Company, has been duly investigated, and pretty much have established and put together the pieces to the puzzle. Thanks to the 'Three Rs.' In an email that I had written back in May 2007 to Richard, he, who is always managing to come to my rescue, has shared my prior email to him--------------and I guess the 'why' I thought there was a connect with Miss Seward and the Seward Company. Apparently, I had 'quoted' in that email, from the then existing BCHS home tour information, the following, referencing the home at 628 Lafayette: In 1921 Robert and Hallie Brown Seward purchased the cottage. Seward was the owner of a menswear store on Washington Street , and his wife Hallie, daughter of Chalmers and Amanda Reed Brown, who lived next door at 632 Lafayette Now, to further set some of this in concrete------and I did wonder as I did a search on the Historic Columbus website for Evelyn Seward, on a few occasions, such as this one: www.historiccolumbusindiana.org/yearbooks/1969/t5.asp Miss Seward was referenced using a 'middle name' of Chalmers which was sort of a 'red flag' with me wondering if it was her mother's maiden name, BUT that didn't seem to pan out in my investigation in the Bartholomew County Archives-------------------but, aha-----------up in the home tour info-------- Chalmers would have been her maternal grandfather's first name. Just a smile in passing------I always say that I am not 'into genealogy' when it comes to history, I just like to verify 'the stories I have heard,' but guess just a tad of genealogy does creep in!!!! My good friend in Barstow, and cousin Gail in Columbus, are surely smiling, they who are big into genealogy!!!! Thanks, Barbara 'n Gail, some of it has 'rubbed off.' I think, the puzzle pieces fit!!!!! And brain exercise for today completed!!!!! Stay tuned, as the 'grapevine' says that Richard and George are out investigating some this afternoon. You never know!!!! Nanc

I gleaned the following from the 1921-23 City Directory. The Seward Company, 410 Washington Street. Owners listed as R. A. Seward & J. L. Schwartzkopf. Robert A. (Hallie) Seward is living at 628 Lafayette. In the 30's, Evelyn C. is also living at 628 Lafayette and Robert is listed as working at the Columbus Chamber of Commerce. The 1980 Columbus City Directory lists Evelyn C. Seward as living at 632 Lafayette. George found letters with The Seward Company letter head as the return address addressed to Evelyn C. both in Paris France and Butler Drive in Indianapolis, Indiana. As a side note, some of those letters sent to Indianapolis were ‘Special Delivery’ which had a 10 cent Special Delivery stamp in addition to the regular 2 cent stamp.

Way to go, George and Richard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great information, thanks. And altho' perhaps not where it should be posted, but thanks to both, George and Richard, for all their excellent postings about the Columbus Fire Department. Yeah, the message boards are addicting, even when you really don't have the time, perhaps, to dig into the history, but the rewards are so many. It truly is up to some of us to dig deep and document the Columbus history that we can recall. Go for it with gusto. Thanks to all. Nanc

Evelyn Seward Columbus High School (CHS) Teacher 41 Years
Interesting comment: I have been informed that the Director of the Bartholomew County Historical Society (BCHS), now lives in the donated Seward House at 628 Lafayette. Further, it is my understanding that all of the Seward family history papers and documents, that included her father, mother and family members are stored in boxes at the BCHS building in Columbus. It would be interesting to read her family history dating back when the Seward Company was established, and the Evelyn Seward donated papers to Columbus. As someone said Evelyn Seward grew up and lived in that house from 1930, until she moved into another Lafayette Street house.
If anyone would like to comment or add more to the wonderful story of Evelyn Seward, then just jump right in the conversation here. _________________________________________________________

That building was torn down in the 70's and Citizens Saving and Loan built a new bank on that corner. Irwin-Union currently has some offices in the building.

Picture & Statement 1924Source: This article and picture was in the back pages of the 1924 CHS Log. I searched at the Bartholomew County Public Library this evening. I located the following information about the F. J. Meyer store. In the 1898-99 Columbus City Directory listed a Frederick J. Meyer as living at 642 Mechanic Street and working as a clerk at the Vorwald & Brothers store. In the 1898-99 city directory Frederick J. Meyer (Barbara) and Henry Bruning, owned Meyer & Bruning selling Dry Goods, Carpets and Queensware at the northeast corner of 3rd and Washington Streets. Does anyone know what Queensware is? Would that be a brand or an object? In the 1902-03 book, Fred J. Meyer was the only listed owner of a business selling Dry Goods, Carpets and Queensware at 301 Washington Street. The 1903-04 book lists the store still located at 301 Washington Street. At this time it lists a phone number as 106 for the store and 448 at Mr. Meyer’s residence. In the 1907 book, I saw a change. This book listed the F. J. Meyer store listed as Dry Goods Merchant. Another change is that the store location is now at 433 Washington Street. I think most members of this board will recall the store at that location and the scales in the entrance. I think my family ‘always’ stopped to be weighed as we passed that location. The 1908-09 book had some information that I may have missed in the other books. It lists a Fannie Meyer as a clerk at F. J Meyers Dry Goods, Eda Meyer as a Seamstress, Louis A. Meyer, Widow of Henery and Mary Meyer Seamstress and all four as living at 1001 4th Street. The 1910-11 and 1913 books both listed the location at 435 Washington Street so I ended my search at that point.

Sawin Garage in 1924Columbus IndianaThe Statement Indicates Cars Weren't Common In 1919Where was it located?Source: CHS Log 1924 While at the Bartholomew County Public Library I also searched for the Sawin Garage. In the 1917-1918 Columbus City Directory lists a Charles (Gladys A.) Sawin as a salesman at the Newsom’s Garage. Here is a little extra, The Newsom’s Garage was owned by Count Newsom and was located at 316-320 4th Street. The page had an advertisiment for the Newsom’s Garage. At the top of the block ad was Paige! Was that a car of the time? Do you think it was a misprint? What’s your take? The rest of the ad is below... CHEVROLET “490"
Touring $550.00 Roadster $535.00 All weather Touring $625.00
FOB Flint
Hudson Super Six Back to the Sawin Garage from the 1919-1921 city directory Sawin Garage was located at 536 Jackson Street and operated by C. F. and I. W. Sawin. I. W. Sawin lived in Edinburg. No, that’s not mis-spelled. That’s how it was spelled in the 1919 book! Charles F. (Gladys A.) Lived at 114 4th Street. 1921-23 Book listed the Sawin Garage at 536 Jackson Street. Charles F. (Gladys A.) Lived at 115 4th Street. Isaac W. (Sarah) now lived at 721 Hutchins. This book also listed John L. (Florence L.) Sawin as living at 711 Maple Street. The 1923-24 book lists the Sawin Garage at 536 Jackson Street. The 1925-26 books lists the Sawin Garage at 536 Jackson Street, but with the folowing ‘new’ information. Isaac W. Sawin is listed as President and Ethel Powell as Sec.-Treasure. John L. and Charles F. Sawin are no longer listed as living in Columbus. 1927-28 book lists the Sawin Garage location at the ‘rear’ of 536 Jackson. The Ockland Garage is now listed at 536 Jackson Street. The Ockland Garage was owned by E. L. Schaefer.

Quoting from Richard's post, Recollections of the 1920s, regarding perhaps an automobile-------------PAIGE. In the 1917-1918 Columbus City Directory lists a Charles (Gladys A.) Sawin as a salesman at the Newsom’s Garage.

In this family, we are always very curious about that name, what w/eldest daughter--Paige. I did a quick internet search, and came up with this link. wcroberts.org/Paige_History/1927_Paige.htmlRichard also noted that the Meyers Company sold 'Queensware.' An internet search came up with the following history of same, perhaps the last line would 'apply' to what was available in the 1920s. www.oldandsold.com/articles/article448.shtmlNanc
