I attended Jefferson school for the 4th, 5th, and 6th.grades, years 44-45, 45-46, 46-47. Those years Miss Nettie Whitehorn was principal. The old school when built was the 4th. Ward School, had wooden floors and steam heat with the old cast iron radiators in the rooms, the coal fired boiler was in the basement. I do recognize some of the faces in the 1942 picture, that being Jane Sohn, Janice Harrison and Norita Miller, the pretty cheerleaders for the 6th. grade basketball team, which I was Captain of the team. Also in the 42 picture I think I see James K Dickey, David Gunder and Bob Smith. In the 45 picture I recongnize most of the class.I remember there was a swiming pool in back of the school, open in the summer time by the City Park Dept. Some of the students ate lunch at Jim Berry's grocery across the street from the school. Everyone walked to school back then, some as far as 8th and Brown st. It was a great old school. I Attended Jefferson School 3rd,4th, 5th, and 6th Grades, 47-48, 48-49, 49-50, and 50-51! This is a Photo of My 5th Grade Class, 49-50. Photo Courtesy of Louise (Jackson) Brinkman.

Buying gas these days seems to be more a matter of convenience and price as compared to the loyalty established between gas station owners and customers back in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. Full service stations have all but disappeared in this modern age. When I was a kid, dad always filled up the car at one particular gas station, but for the life of me, I cannot remember where it was. I believe it was the gas station that was once on the nw corner of State and Gladstone, Please leave any pictures and memories of Columbus Indiana gas stations here. My Father had a gas Station at the Southeast Corner of 2nd and Jackson in the 40's.I have a Photo of a Receipt Pad from then, but don't know how to Attch it. Can You Help? When I tried to Attach My Photo,it said the File was too Large!

I was wrong about Hazel Fodrea being our teacher in High School. After looking at my HS yearbook, I noticed that it was Hazel McKain that I was thinking about. Sorry for the error.

When I was in High School, Hazel Fodrea was one of our teachers. That was from 1953-1957. She was known to the students then as Happy Hazel.

I attended East Columbus School in the 1st and 2nd grades, which would have been in 1944-1946. I recognize one of the students from the 3rd grade photo of 1943. On the front row in the middle, with the dark dress and long black hair is Charlene (Stoneking)McCue.

Hi George.I remember when you had the Cushman and delivered our papers. Betty is doing well, except she lost her husband Lynn Lowery a year and a half back, and she misses him very much.My father also had a garage behind our house across from Dan Walls. Hope to see you at the racers reunion this Saturday. Thanks again for all of the info and photos that you have provided on the boards.

Thanks George for posting this info and photos. This brings back a lot of memories for me. I attended races at both tracks as a youngster. We lived on 14th and union and across the street from Dan Walls, and I used to go over and watch them work on the race car,and then take it east on 14th street to test it.They would usually make a quick run over and back, then put it in the garage and close the door just before the police arrived. If memory serves me correctly,I think you were our paper boy in the early 50's.I think you were in my sister Betty's class. If it would be possible, would you be willing to share these photos with the attendees at the Columbus Oldtimers reunion being held at the Fairgrounds annually. This year it is on March 12th,one week from tomorrow. This is a well attended meeting each year, with race fans from all over the Midwest attending with their old racecars.

My parents took my brothers and sisters and I to A.Tross when we were young,as my Father was an Auto Mechanic and times were hard in the 40's and early 50's. I remember Aaron Tross waiting on us,or one of his son's,Bob and Joe.Then in the summer of 1956 I needed a job,and I was hired by the Tross brothers. I worked there part time while I was in High School, mostly just Friday nights and Saturdays,as that was their busiest times. When I graduated from High School in 1957,they hired me full time of 47 hours a week, and I was paid 39.90 after taxes per week.During the week I was a stock clerk, marking and stocking the clothing in the back room and basement. On weekends I would be a sales clerk. The one standing rule that they had, was, don't let a customer leave the store without selling them something, and they would really pressure us to follow the customer to the front door. They would be very upset if you didn't make a sale, especially Bob. Joe was more jovial and friendly to customers and the employees.I worked there until July of 1958,when I left and went to Arvin. It definitely was a unique experience working there.
