Am really not sure where to put this post, as my memories say 'Garfield, and Lucky One's say State Street' so will compromise. And just make it a 'general statement.' Oh, Lucky One, your post about Miss Hazel------------I just have to add my two cents worth. I really can't remember NOT knowing the lady, as she lived in the front apartment of my grandmother's house, with our backyards adjoining. We lived on 7th St. and my grandmother's house was on Cottage, just south of 7th and Cottage, 2nd house from the corner, east side of the street. Now all Cummins. Being one of the youngest kids in the neighborhood------frankly I was jealous!!!! Miss Hazel never, ever 'became your good buddy' until AFTER you had her in first grade at Garfield. Once you 'passed that milestone' in your life you got to do the 'fun things' with her. And each summer she would gather the 'old enough' neighborhood kids together for 'field trips around town.' The two trips I recall, one to climb up into the Courthouse, up where the pigeons roosted, and of all things, a 'tour' of the funeral home there on Franklin. I honestly have trouble realizing that the woman drove a car!!!!!!!!!!! All I remember of 'her transportation' to and from Garfield was via a bicycle with just a huge front basket. Know for a fact she did NOT have a car when she lived on Cottage. And rode the bus to get downtown. Her apartment in my grandmother's house was one of three. Hers was at the front, and included the front porch, and a gathering spot for the neighborhood kids, IF you were past first grade! As I recall the apartment consisted of a large front room, a small kitchenette, a bedroom, and I do remember when she approached my dad, who 'managed the apartments' for his mother, to have the very small bathroom remodeled to include a bathtub. That was just a real big deal for her. I don't recall her having a dog, but perhaps she did, I know my dad would never have said no to that, and one photo in the Garfield thread does include a picture of her dog. Thanks, Lucky One, you jarred some memories for me. Miss Hazel was the only one that I would consider to have been a permanent resident of my grandmother's apartments. Most often the other two were rented to military families stationed at Camp Atterbury. Have some treasured memories of those folks, as well. Nanc

Thanks Nanc. It is so nice to learn a little about her life. I was in her first grade class at State Street in 1958. I am not sure when she started teaching at State Street. I just thought she had always been there. She may have retired within a few years of that. She drove a car very similar to this one. I don't believe it was exactly this model but I am looking for it. This will give you general idea of color and shape. I saw her drive away in it many times. She parked on the west side of the old building at State Street. There was a small parking area for teachers just outside the chain link fence. I would watch her pass by as I was swinging on the old playground swings. She was a curiosity for me and I paid her extra attention. I am not sure why I was fascinated by her. Maybe because she drove such a big unusual car that really didn't seem to suit her. Were you close to her during that time period ?

Great photo, Lucky One!!! Big difference between 'that kind of car' and a bike in the way of transportation. We moved to CA in the fall of 1952, so beyond that time, I have no recollections of Miss Hazel. Altho' I don't recall for certain, am thinking that my grandmother's house was sold very soon after we left, as my dad was no longer in town to oversee the property and his sisters and my grandmother were living in Seattle and/or one in the Indy area. It was not too long after 1952 that our house on 7th St. (I have quite a bit posted about that area in the 1940s thread, about on p. 3, I think) was taken over by Cummins, and was sort of an urgent care place for employees. Perhaps Richard could date for us---------just when Cummins took over all of that area on the east side of Cottage between 6th and 7th, and the 'blvd.' was put in, which basically is where the adjoining pasture field to my house was. Up to now, as I sort through the treasures that my mom saved, I haven't found any photos of those neighborhood houses, altho' my head says some exist. Again, welcome to the boards. We all love it when people share their treasured memories of days gone by in Columbus. Nanc

This post is contributed from Jack Hinkle. Post sizing was done by Richard. Enjoy the names of these four schools and all the other names printed on this handout. This tourney was played at the new Maple Street Gym of Columbus High School. The teams were Twenty-Fifth Street Panthers, Wilson Wildcats, Booth-Sester Tigers and Clifty Wildcats.

Columbus Junior High Tourney (Basketball) February 4, 1956
Tourney Results Year 1956: 25th Street School Won
UPDATE: Courtesy of Larry Bray
Quote from Larry: Nice to see information about the past. I remember that tourney. We beat Clifty and played 25th St. in the evening championship. We lost to them. I "held" their top player, Dave Myers, to about 14 points, the high scorer, so obviously I let my team down. Dave and I became friends as we played on the same 9th grade team. His family moved that summer to Ohio, I believe. Also, the mention of Jack Hinkle. After having played baseball for 3 years in midget league, I came back at age 15 to play junior ball, and the 1st game as the opposing pitcher, Jack threw big curve balls to me and I struck out 3 straight times. Every time I did, Dad was sitting in a lawn chair behind the screen, and I could hear him go ...oooggghhhhh! I was glad I had ridden my bike to the game so I wouldn't have to ride home in the car with him. Oh, sweet 50 year old memories.

Today, I found a small booklet, dated November 1948, which sort of advertises the public school system in Columbus, with many photos of unidentified students from elementary school through high school. Thought it would be fun to begin posting this multi-paged booklet. The cover! (Stay tuned, this is NOT working, computer dummy here! WHEW, finally figured it out!!!! AND just an FYI, Richard didn't have to help me!!!! Nanc

Well, Jack if you are correct in that this is the First Grade at McKinley in 1948; then most of these kids were later the graduates of Columbus High School Year 1960. All the names you mentioned I remember well. That is an amazing picture that Nanc dug up a long time ago. Thanks for identifying what year and some of the kids of that time. I have never seen a picture of any of my classes at Lincoln School that was located on 2nd Street and Franklin. Must have been a treat for you to see this aged photo. What the heck that was only 60 years ago almost. Ha, ha, ha............. Jack

JackThis is one of the ' whoa' posts on the message boards from Bob and Jack, and really folks, what these boards are 'all about.' The more each of us contribute, the more valuable becomes this collection of Columbus history. It is not just one person------------it is ALL of us, sharing, and adding, and expanding. I just am certain that no other town/community in this US of A has these kinds of contributions to their history. Let's face it------------COLUMBUS, INDIANA IS SPECIAL------------------FOR MANY REASONS. Join in, please. I love it, and love you all. Nanc

Actually what you said is probably right, as my memory is not always clear. I remember Dave Myers as a really good football quarterback, and as good as Skip Lindeman was on your great 1959 team, I always thought Dave would have been a great addition to that team in some capacity. As a young teen, with "some" ability, I never made a High School team in any sport. As I have gotten older, I realize speed is the difference in sports. As a former High School teacher at Ben Davis High School, the teachers used to play basketball in the morning before classes. A phys. ed. teacher friend of my summed it well for me one morning: "Larry, you have deceptive speed, you are slower than you look". Ah, honesty! The truth hurts. But we all worked our tails off trying to be as good as possible. Another name from the past in our class is Ed Poole. He is a retired educator who has written a couple of books, and has a consulting company. He works with industry about production, relationships, etc. He just moved from Napierville, ILL to Boone N.C. Understand you are in Carmel, as we live in Avon. Great to see you and Bob and others, keeping our memories alive. Thanks, Larry Bray

Hi, and that was a neat page, Jack, from the 1935 Log. Names I noted: Dr. Dorothy Teal and Dr. Schmitt----------now I didn't think that Dr. Teal came to town to practice until WWII times when the male MDs in town went into the military. Guess I was wrong in that thought. Know Dr. Schmitt was our MD, then Dr. Teal for a period of time, and then Dr. Schmitt again later. Saw T. K. Smith's name----------minister of First Christian, he was at the Tabernacle, and minister at the new church til he retired. Bruing's--------------yes, a very nice women's and kids clothing store in town, on Washington St. between 4th and 5th, east side of the street, I believe. Nanc

Re: Lyman Overshiner I'm his granddaughter and for fun googled him to see what I could find, and your link was the most interesting with his signature on that page! I'd love to know what you remember about him, and whether you knew my dad, John. Grandpa was older when I was born, and passed away when I was a teenager. I'd love any stories about him or Dad that you can remember! Kay

Azalia Grade School Bartholomew County School SystemComment: The school apparently closed in the late 1960s. During the middle fifties the school provided classes through the 8th grade until county consolidation. Azalia school had sports teams prior to consolidation efforts. I read on the net that the school shown here was damaged by fire in 2008. Brief: The Peterville grade school that has long been torn down looked somewhat like this building. Peterville had a indoor gym which many basketball games were played among the grade school teams. I am not sure if Azalia had an indoor gym. I have posted this in case someone that is a member of the boards or readers attended this school before high school.
