Friends of CHS 1953. This is Bob Lane, however, if you remember me at all it would be as Bobby. I graduated with the 52 bunch, but I went to school most of my young years with those who were in the 53 class. That being so, I will talk to both. This is a wonderful website. Many thanks to David Secrest and his many hours of labor to make it come alive. I encourage you to join in. Register and logon to let us know about you. I am hoping we will be able to create a chronicle of our class that will make interesting reading for our children, even our grandchildren. I’m thinking if each of us would write some small chapter of our lives and post it on this site, it will happen. Just a small snapshot in words of who you are and what made you who you are. Tell us of your life in the 40’s and 50’s or later. There is a thread for those thoughts on this site, but come back as often as you can. If you are not comfortable with a computer, your grandchildren will gladly teach you. Ask them. Tell us of that first bike, or the trip to the woods with your father. Tell us about that great vacation to New York City, or Washington DC, or Florida. Give us your impressions of first grade, the first date, slipping that garter snake into the girls cabin at camp. What did you enjoy in scouts, in music lessons, which teachers were very important in your education mission, and why? Don’t tell all in one session, spread the joy and happiness out over weeks, months or even years, but write. God is good. May He shower you with His goodness. Bob Lane

Hey 1953 Classmates, Why aren't we communicating on this board? Lets get with it! Someone make a comment about something! Wasn't our 50th reunion terrific and the book Joy put together was simply wonderful. Tell us what you remember most about your four years at CHS. How do you feel about the old building being torn down to make way for a new school? Babs

Because of our flooding I did not attend the recent meeting of the committee on our reunion to be held in August. However, a friend did inform me that the dinner at the Elks is probably not going to happen. Seems they are changing their minds about the charge, wanting a certain guarantee on the number of people who will attend, etc. So that portion of our get together is up in the air. As soon as I learn more I will post the information here for anyone who was in the Class of 1953.

Bob, No new details that I know about for our 55th reunion get together. I will try and find out something this week and post it. I think the fish fry is still set but its the main event (dinner) they are thinking about moving someplace else.
I guess for those of us who have already paid for this we may end up having to pay more if they go someplace that wants more for our dinner. Hopefully I will learn something this week.

The Elk's club dining room has changed ownership recently. It is now owned and managed by the couple who own the Power House Brewery ( used to be the CB) Now that things have settled done out there, you might give them another call. Our Class of 1955 meets monthlyfor lunch there, and we NEVER know how many will show up. GOOD LUCK !!
Are you inviting other CHS Classes to the Fish fry? Inquiring minds want to know...... ;D

Margo, I will pass this information on to Jim Abbott so the committee can pursue it. Just after the flood was when I was informed that it was not likely the Elks would be where we had our dinner. It is perhaps the new people that were making waves about wanting to know how many, perhaps changing the cost, etc. I don't know as I didn't attend that meeting. I will see that the rest of the committee does know about the new ownership though and thanks. Also about the fish fry, I can't answer that either but normally our class does not invite other classes. I don't know why, it would seem like a good way to stay in touch with people who also attended CHS during the same time frame. I will also ask about this. ************************************************** Latest update. Jim Abbott emailed me back and it now appears we will still have dinner at the Elks Club on the airport but The Pines will be catering the food. Also "no sorry" to the inviting of other classes. I gather the class treasury is paying for the fish fry at so much per head and there is just not enough money to open it up to anyone but our class. Hope this will clarify the details for those who asked . Another meeting is planned for next week, so if there are any changes I will post it at that time.

Babs, I am a 52 grad, but only because I was able to get a few extra credits. I was told in April of 52 that I would grad. that year. I was with the 53 bunch all through Jr. High and high school. I was hopping to attend at least some of this celebration. I would, of course pay my own way. Do you think I could get an invitation to some of the events? If you could find out and get back with me as to who and how I could connect I would be so pleased. Thanks, Bob Lane

Bob, I've copied and pasted your post and emailed it to Jim Abbott and when I get a reply back from him, I will let you know. I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be invited....especially since you went to school with our class all through Junior High and High School. I'm fairly certain Jim will reply "positively" so hang on till I hear from him. I know we have invited class mates who didn't graduate so you would fall into that category by your graduation ahead of us.
Did you see that I sent you a personal message? If not next time you log on, check the top of the page and you will find I did. I also emailed Margo about your thoughts. Thanks so much for your kind offer.

We had our final meeting this afternoon and it seems we are going to have a really great turn out for our 55th class reunion.
Friday night, August 8th, we will be having a social hour and then a fish fry at the Shriner's Club. Beginning time for the social hour is 5:30 with the fish being served at 6:30. Afterwards we will again visit and catch up with old friends. Other classes, are invited to join us around 7:30 to socialize. Sorry we just don't have enough money in our class treasury to feed other classes but we would be most happy if you would like to join us for socializing afterwards.
Saturday night(August 9th) we will meet at the Elks Club at the Airport at 5:30 , dinner is being catered by The Pines in Seymour for our "main event". If you have not turned in your reservations (they are required) please do so immediately as Jim Abbott said he needs to have the exact number of people attending by August 4th. The fish fry is free and dinner on Saturday is $10.00 per person.
Hope to see a really great turn out and I'll be at the Welcome table! :-)

Dear class of 53 friends, What a joy it was this evening to see some old friends and some I didn't know so well or at all. You were all pleasant and talked as if we had been close all these years. I guess friendships really won't go away even with time. Some I wish had been there, maybe next time if I am still on planet earth. May God bless you and yours. Bobby Lane

Glad you enjoyed the evening Bob. We did also...but it did end pretty early. Guess we "old timers" don't stay around to party very late!
See you tomorrow night at the Elks Club I hope. Oh you asked for the list of attendees and I just emailed it to you. Some who said they would be there tonight did not make it (health problems, etc.) so hopefully a few more will show up tomorrow night.

The 55th class reunion for the graduating class of 1953 from Columbus High School is now "history" but what a reunion it was! I've not been able to attend every single one of our reunions but of the ones I have attended, this one was by far the best. It was kept casual, relaxed and simply wonderful. Everyone I've talked to has said the same thing. So for all of you who missed it for whatever reason, you really missed a great time. The fish fry at The Shrine Club on Friday was terrific, only to be topped just a bit on Saturday night. The Shrine Club catered the fish fry and The Pines catered the dinner at the Elks on Saturday. Food was great both nights, fellowship was wonderful and as they say "A good time was had by all!" Miss Shirley Lyster was our special guest and she delighted us with her story about meeting the Challenger crew and being witness to that fateful day in Florida when the Challenger exploded on blast off. It seems some of "our boys" were not too kind to Miss Lyster when she began her teaching career at CHS and she also told of a few things some of these boys pulled on her. I never knew anything about any of these things the boys pulled but they surely did make her life miserable for a while. Still she said she loved us all, in spite of the torture we put her through. I actually thought our generation was a bit more respectful of our teachers, but guess I was wrong.
Not sure if there will be a 60th but if I'm still about will be sure to post so everyone knows whats up.
Kudos to everyone involved and especially Jim and Rozanne Abbott for chairing the reunion and making the decisions on the place, the food and the agenda.
IT WAS A FUN TWO EVENING EVENT!!!!
