The Bulldog That Served Two GymnasiumsPearl & Maple Street GymsColumbus IndianaA few years back Margo indicated a Columbus parade float had carried the CHS Bulldog during the 1953 to 1954 time frame. The bulldog was then affixed on wheels and first served as a roll out onto the basketball floor before the games. The bulldog was constructed by a CHS student at the time and his name is mentioned in this thread. The Pearl Street Gym was the first location it was stored and used. After the CHS Maple Street Gym construction was complete; it served the same purpose. To my knowledge the rolling bulldogs still is active at the North Columbus High School. The dog is now 58 years old with probably a few face lifts, or repairs over the years. Source: From the 1954 LOG of CHS.

A Late Congressional Article I Found, But Worthy Of Posting Related To Legendary Bill StearmanWashington, D.C.— Congressman Mike Pence today tribute to the late Coach Bill Stearman of Columbus, Indiana during 2003 in the House of Representatives.Quote: PENCE PAYS TRIBUTE TO LATE COLUMBUS, INDIANA, BASKETBALL LEGEND Washington, Sep 24, 2003 - Washington, D.C.— Congressman Mike Pence today paid tribute to the late Coach Bill Stearman of Columbus, Indiana. Stearman died Tuesday from complications that developed after he suffered a stroke. Below are Pence’s remarks: “Mr. Speaker, in Indiana, high school basketball is a passion. My home state has produced thousands of first-rate players and coaches since the 1940s. And one such hero passed away on Tuesday at the age of 79. “Coach Bill Stearman’s basketball acumen earned him legendary status throughout Indiana. His Columbus High and then Columbus North teams won 714 games, including two semi state titles, 12 regional championships and 27 sectional crowns. He amassed an impressive resume including two undefeated regular season teams before being inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983. “But, Mr. Speaker, while all of Indiana will mourn the passing of an outstanding basketball coach, Bill Stearman’s hometown of Columbus, Indiana, will mourn the passing of a great man and Christian role model to generations of Columbus High School students, myself included. “Mr. Speaker, on behalf of the City of Columbus, I extend heartfelt sympathies to Bill Stearman’s family, specifically his son Bill, his grandson William and his sister Katherine. Coach Stearman embodied both the Hoosier Hysteria of Indiana high school basketball and the Hoosier Hospitality of Indiana’s caring communities. He will be deeply missed.” End QuoteGo Here Full Text Article: mikepence.house.gov/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1050&Itemid=69

Memories To Dust When The Pearl Street Gym Went Down (UPDATED) Comment: Today a new member joined the boards and I thought it might be a name from the past. His name is Alan Mohr and if it is the same man that I remember he was part of a great CHS Basketball team during 1953-1954. Not only that he always struck me a very nice guy in those days and a pretty good basketball player. If it is Alan Mohr the one I am thinking of then I say; welcome aboard the Columbus history boards. He is a refreshment of that team and what they accomplished in a compressed view below: The Last CHS Team (1953-54) To Play @ Pearl Street:The last Columbus High School team to play in the old Pearl Street Gym was a great team with a record of 21 wins and 6 loses for the year. This was the first CHS team to go to the semi-state tourney in sixteen years. See names below picture. Comment: This team during that season went to the State Semi-State (sweet 16) and was defeated by Crispus Attucks, where Oscar Robertson played. The Bulldogs played Crispus Attucks in the 1st Game in that Semi-State run. The CHS Bulldogs lead at halftime, but Attucks ended up winning at a score of 68 to 67. Attucks Oscar Robertson really went to work the second half to put the dogs down. This was revealed to me from Jerry Records (bro). However, a little school named Milan won the state that year. The movie "Hoosiers" with Gene Hackman was based around that years Indiana tourney. The Line-Up Above: Back Row: Manager Jim Dudley, Harry Horn, Jerry Records, Dick Miller, Jim Wilbur, Bill Smith, Ken "Buck" Smith and Bill Stearman. Front Row: Alan Mohr, Joe Denny, Max Perry, Bob Risk, JC Gosnell, and Larry Whipker. Comment: I believe Alan Mohr was number 45 front row on the left. The last time I mentioned this team, etc. was Feb 6, 2007, so I guess it was about time to resurface some of the past guys. The following players and coach in the above picture are deceased as of the date 2/7/2011: Coach Bill Stearman, J.C. Gosnell, Bill Smith and Max Perry. History Of Milan Winning State In 1954:CHS played in the December 1953 Frankfort Holiday Tournament. This was just prior to CHS Bulldogs appearance in the Semi-State during March 1954; when Attucks beat CHS 68-67. Milan played CHS and won the Holiday Tournament by only 3 points, at a score of 52 to 49. Milan went on to win the Indiana State tounament. Years later the movie Hoosiers with Gene Hackman was made to reveal the history of Milan's games. That year CHS was a comparable team to Milan. JC Gosnell was our "Bobby Plump" (so to speak); JC was recongized for his play as a silver anniversary player by the state, just prior to his passing. JC Gosnell was an Outstanding Baseball player and pitcher as well. NOTE: This final history was provided by Jerry Records.

I just read the obituary of the great Columbus hall of famer Steve Hollenbeck. He was a star on that great unbeaten 1964 team that went all the way to the final four. Anybody got any memories or pictures of that great team.

Columbus North Girls Basketball Has Chance To Win State Title 201225th Street Columbus, Indiana Girls basketball semistate: Ben Davis forces OT but falls to Columbus NorthQUOTE:"Kyle Neddenriep Scrawled in capital blue letters on the dry erase board in the Columbus North High School girls basketball locker room Saturday were the words "Play every play." If it wasn't the most important message delivered to the Bull Dogs before their Class 4A semistate showdown with Ben Davis, it certainly proved to be the most prophetic. Columbus North advanced to the 4A state finals with a 50-46 overtime win over Ben Davis in a defensive slugfest at Southport High School that saw the young Bulldogs rally in the fourth quarter, lose a late lead, then finish it off in overtime. "It's a testament to their work ethic," second-year Columbus North coach Pat McKee said of his team. At the center of it all for the Bull Dogs were a pair of 5-9 underclassmen: sophomore guard Tayler Goodall and freshman guard Ali Patberg. With Ben Davis leading 39-35 midway through the fourth quarter, Goodall sparked a rally with two drives to the basket as part of her 18 points. Patberg scored 10 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, including a pair of game-clinching free throws with 9.9 seconds left. "They are mature beyond their years," McKee said. "Certainly on the basketball court and I think as people, too." Ben Davis (21-7) trailed 44-39 with 1:57 left in regulation after a three-point play by Patberg, who already has drawn interest from several high-major Division I programs. Jade Mills-Harris answered with a 3-pointer -- one of two for the Giants for the game -- to cut the Columbus North lead to 44-42 with 1:41 left. After the Bull Dogs committed a turnover, Ben Davis tied it with 59 seconds left on an interior basket by Amber Jones. Columbus North (23-3) played for a final shot, but Patberg's baseline floater was offline in the final seconds and the clock ran out on regulation." Max Perry was a neighbor where I grew up in E Columbus. Even as a youngster, he was a gifted athlete. He showed us how to "roll over" a high jump bar, rather than the hurdle jump. After school he played basketball in Hawaii and Utah. I think he later coached in Nashville, IN Larry

Bill Russell Inducted Into Basketball Hall of Fame (Former North CHS Player)
Columbus High School (CHS) graduate Bill Russell will be among 14 inductees at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame's men's induction banquet on Wednesday (March 26) at Primo's Banquet Hall in Indianapolis.
Russell, class of CHS 1963, starred under coach Bill Stearman and was the only freshman to start in the Hall of Fame mentor's long tenure with the Bull Dogs.
Russell set the school record of 1,272 career points and led Columbus to an undefeated regular season and lengthy stint ranked as the No. 1 team in the state as a high school senior. The team finished 25-1, its lone loss in the semistate to eventual state champion Muncie Central.
He went on to earn three letters at Indiana University, where he was regarded as one of the best defenisve players in the Big Ten and was a member of a Big Ten championship squad in 1967.
Later in 1967, he was drafted by the Indiana Pacers.
Russell previously was honored by the Hall of Fame as a member of the Silver Anniversary Team in 1987.
Russell becomes the 15th person with ties to Columbus High or Columbus North to be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
Others include Stearman (1943), a player and coach in Columbus, former Columbus High boys' coaches Everett Case and Cliff Wells, former Columbus North player and girls' coach Debbie Law Marr (1981) and current CN girls' coach Pat McKee.
In addition, nine other players with Columbus ties have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. They include Tom Arnholt (1968), Ray Eddy (1929), W.P. "Dutch" Fehring (1930), Steve Hollenbeck (1964), Tom McKinney (1966), Jerry Newsom (1964), Chuck Taylor (1918), Bob Welmer (1947) and Steve Welmer (1968).

CHS North Wins Basketball State Championship 2015 (4A)
Columbus North 62, Homestead 56:Senior Ali Patberg scored 31 points, grabbed nine rebounds and added five assist and the Columbus North Bulldogs defeated the Homestead Spartans (Fort Wayne). The Bulldogs were on the verge of falling behind by double digits, trailing 38-29 with 5:07 left in the third quarter, when Patberg hit a jumper that would ignite an 18-6 Columbus North run to close out the quarter, putting the Bulldogs in front 47-44. A two-point deficit is the closest the Spartans would come to retaking the lead. The Bulldogs never looked back. From the 5:07 mark in the third through the end of the game, Columbus North outscored Homestead 33-18. Josie Fisher led all Homestead scorers with 13 points. It was Homestead's first appearance in the state final. Columbus North's only other appearance was 2012 (runner-up). Source: Indianapolis Star Sports ____________________________________________________________________ INDIANAPOLIS —The incredible journey of Columbus North senior Ali Patberg and her remarkable teammates had one final leg to finish Saturday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. It was a thriller. Seemingly buried in the third quarter by a Homestead team that simply was playing better in the Class 4A girls basketball state title game, the Bull Dogs turned it around with astounding fury, eventually bringing Columbus North a 62-56 triumph. Patberg, who finished with a highlight reel 31 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists, led a 20-4 run that wound through the third quarter and finally touched down when Patberg dropped a 3-pointer that gave her team a 51-44 lead. “My team was behind me,” said Patberg, who spent most of the fourth quarter dribbling through a frustrated Spartans group that saw their dream of a championship slipping away. “They told me ‘We need you, it’s your time.’” It was literally 10 minutes earlier that the North faithful were sitting quietly in despair, wondering what happened to the best girls basketball team ever from Columbus. For the Spartans, it was simply a tease. Patberg wouldn’t, and couldn’t, allow anything to mess up her team championship, the first IHSAA basketball state title in her city’s history. She scored 19 points in the final two quarters after struggled for much of the first two despite having 12 points in the opening 16 minutes. It took her an uncharacteristic 17 shots in the first half to get that total. Something was amiss. When Homestead added the opening two buckets of the third quarter to push its lead to 37-26, it just didn’t seem to be North’s. Then Patberg produced another magical stretch of basketball. “I had worked too hard all my life for this,” she said. Homestead tried to make a final run in the fourth quarter, but Patberg controlled the ball 80 percent of the time. Maliah Howard-Bass made five of her six free throws in the final seconds, and the victory was complete. “The first quarter we just didn’t play good defense,” North head coach Pat McKee said of his team falling behind 22-15 and working through the next two quarters to wipe out that deficit. “We played sixth-grade defense. We were just chasing it around. “But after that quarter, we found our defense. That’s what got us back. “And, of course, Ali found her stroke.” Patberg was taken out of the game with a second remaining to take a bow, and she embraced her father, North assistant coach Ron Patberg, for several seconds before being swallowed by her teammates. “It’s unbelievable,” Ron Patberg said. “All these years and all those miles we traveled. It’s all worth it.” Source: Columbus Republic Sign into this web site and Click picture to enlarge Team members of the Columbus North basketball team hold up the winning plaque after the girls state basketball championship against Homestead on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Banker's Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

I attended Wilson Jr HS in 1953, 54 and 55 then went on to Columbus Sr. HS now North, and graduated in 1958. I remember that great 1954 team that went to the semifinals and lost to Crispus Attucks. Thanks for all the articles, they brought back fond memories.
