The 1st National Bank was on the southeast corner of 4th and Washington Sts.
Ross Crump worked there in the 1960's.
When National City took over, the front of the building was renovated. If you look at some of the old pictures on the Historic Columbus Indiana website, you can pretty much see the changes that one building has endured in its lifetime.
There is one old picture of the building from the very early 1900's on the website. If you compare that picture to one from the 1960's, you'll see a big difference.
The building was built in 1865. Francis Crump I worked there throughout the 1870's.
I still call it the 1st National Bank, and I'm sure it confuses some people. Sorry, I'm just used to calling it that. It seems that the building has gone through as many renovations as the Crump.

Some of you might remember this gimmick the bank used in 1971. The bills state that 1st National has been around for almost a sesquicentennial. Well, if you add 150 to 1865, you come up with 2015 and that's pretty far off from 1971!

Here's some REAL money from First National Bank. My great-great grandfather, Captain William Jones Lucas, was president of the bank from the late 1800's to 1901. Upon his death in 1901, his wife, Elizabeth Crump Lucas, became president. It is believed that she was the first woman to be president of a bank......in Indiana, and possibly in the United States. If you look closely at this bill, you will see it contains her signature in the lower right corner. It was common for banks at that time to have their own currency.

This also appeared in the August 3, 2007-edition of The Republic’s Looking Back column.
FROM 1957.
The First National Bank announced plans for a branch facility in the 25th Street Shopping Center and drive-up banking service at the main offices at Fourth and Washington Streets.
