Shown is the first iron bridge built in the county at Thompson Mill, this being in 1869.This bridge replaced a wooden bridge that was carried away by high water. Cost of the new bridge was $28,000. Shown also is the Thompson Mill that was built in 1872, the mill built before it was destroyed by fire, it was built in 1850. The first mill built in 1826 can be seen in the back ground. The 1872 mill was torn down in 1957. .

Any information about this picture, date, location, would be greatly appreciated. Make a post or contact me, George Kelly. What a great picture! Notice it's "Uncle Joes Place" and "Uncle Joes Filling Station" on the signs. Are those Shell gasoline signs? I didn't know they went back that far. Since the town name is right on the front it must have been on the main road going thru the area at the time. Are those railroad tracks at the far left?

Ricky: It appears to me that the location is at the intersection of Kyle St. and County Line, the railroad and Kyle St. being on the left in the picture. The problem being, I checked the sanborn maps of 1926-1933 and it shows that area being vacant and the sanborn maps stop at that date, so maybe this picture is latter on in the 1930's. The auto in the picture looks to me being about a 1926 or there about model. Yes, you are correct about the Shell signs, I think I see three of them.
John Rondot is the owner of this fine picture.

Edinburgh or Edinburg Police PatchNote: As I stated a few years ago the spelling seems to change off and on by the local elected officials. When I was living in Columbus during the 1950s it was spelled Edinburg. Today, I am not sure how they spell it. As I said before "Beam Me Up Scotty." The year this patch was worn is not clear??? The question is what years did they spell it with an h on the end of the word?

This is the history of the town name as written on the towns official website at www.edinburgh.in.us : "Edinburgh, Indiana was the first settlement in Johnson County and is situated in the far southeast corner of the county. Edinburgh’s first settler was John Campbell who came into the area in 1820. The original plat of Edinburgh in 1822 contained 32 lots and was owned by Alexander Thompson and Lewis Bishop. It is not certain where Edinburgh got its name. Some early accounts say Alexander Thompson was a Scotsman by birth and the town was named in honor of his native land, Edinburgh, Scotland. However, other documents suggest Thompson was born in Virginia and was of Scotch-Irish descent. In another account, Edinburgh was described by the early settlers as “Eden” because of its beauty. The naming of Edinburgh remains unsure. The name originally ended in "h" when it was first platted and when the town was incorporated in 1853. The "h" was dropped from the name in 1899 and was missing for the next 77 years. In 1977 the Town Council restored the "h" to Edinburgh's name."Edinburgh or Edinburg Police PatchNote: As I stated a few years ago the spelling seems to change off and on by the local elected officials. Great picture George! I enlarged the picture to see what movie was playing during the picture time. The side of the building ad says "Hi Neighbor" and research finds the movie was made in 1942. So, I suspect the picture was taken around 1942. Go here to see a brief about the movie: www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/77917/Hi-Neighbor/ The Pixy Theater that was located at the corner of Walnut and Thompson St., date and event are unknown.

Great information on the Pixy Bob, thank you. I remember going to the Pixy in the late 1930s when we lived in Edinburgh. On Saturday afternoon admission could be had for a liberty head nickel.

Beautiful Picture Down Main Street Edinburg IndianaHistory Comment: You are looking East in downtown Edinburgh, Indiana. The main street buildings were all given a uniform look after being destroyed by fire in the 1870's.Source: Wikipedia Commons which states it is free and may be copied per the website.
