This is a Re-post from "Everything Non-Columbus Section" per Webmaster David Sechrest's request. "Pixie Theater, Opera House and Masonic Temple" This is a postcard dated 1911My grandmother lived about four houses down from this place in Edinburg. My Dad went to this as a young boy when it was the Pixie theater and watched the old western movies. My Grandmother's last house is still standing today. NOTE:This building still stands today in 2006.

This is a Re-post from "Everything Non-Columbus Section" per Webmaster David Sechrest's request.Comparison Pictures of Edinburg Downtown Main 1909 to 2007 That is around 98 years apart for these photos Horses, Wagons & Streetcars Cars and TrucksStudy the building windows and roof designs. As you note they are the same as the early days. Edinburg buildings on Main Street have not changed much in over 100 years I suspect.

This is a Re-post from "Everything Non-Columbus Section" per Webmaster David Sechrest's request.'Beam Me Up Scotty' to Edinburg or Edinburgh or Edinborough IndianaRhonda and I have been discussing the spelling of the above town (take your choice on spelling). We both understand the first two have been used over the years at various times. It seems the longest run for the name has been Edinburg. But, then at some point someone put an "h" on the end of the name. Then maybe 25 years ago I recall seeing an entrance sign, to that take your choice name, and it was spelled something like Edinborough. Well it was a puzzle so I went on the net and of course I found someone said that the town folks were mainly Scottish descendants, but that seemed odd if you look at the phone book names. To continue with this mystery of three spellings, I went to two search engines and came up with the town demographics data, with two spellings. First One: (Edinburg) homes.point2.com/Neighborhood/US/Indiana/Johnson-County/Blue-River/Edinburg-Demographics.aspxSecond One: (Edinburgh) www.seta.iastate.edu/city/city.aspx?CityFips=20404&State=INFurther, if you look at the old postcards that George has posted you will see it spelled Edinburg. Now, the town entrance sign may say Edinburgh or something else. But, we know one thing for sure it is confusing to most that research the place. When I was a kid in the 1940s it was spelled Edinburg. My Dad and grandmother days it was Edinburg. Someone must like the Edinburgh or Edinborough Scotland twist of heritage I guess or someone didn't make it through the local spelling bee in the 1800s. Oh, well beam me up Scotty I give up. 'Yah ah' figure it out and brief Rhonda and me, please.

David, at about the same time that picture was taken, we lived in a upstairs apartment on the very right of that picture, at the time I was about 4 years old and remember looking out the front window at that clock. At that time the bank was the Edinburgh State Bank, before that I believe that it was the Blue River Federal Savings Bank, today it is the Salin Bank. Looking at a picture of the old Irwin Union Bank just a short time ago, I wondered about what ever happen to the clock, it looked much like the Edinburgh clock?.

This picture is from the A History of Edinburgh, Indiana 1820 - 1986 book. Note the spelling of Edinburgh, I believe the people decided several years ago to add the " h ". George

Rhonda
The information that I have on the home is that it was built in 1867 by a Alfred C.Thompson, up until 1980 it was know as the Thompson-McEwen-Bruce residence. After 1980 it was the home of Dennis and Jane Edwards, I don't know if they still have the home or not?. In the late 1930's we lived just 2 blocks south of the home on Keely St., I remember we would take our wagons to the home and go down the long walk. I believe that home just north , or at 106 North Pleasant St , is the home of Byce and Eva Mae Sconce at the present time.

Beam Me Down Scottie We Now Know The Spelling History (or was that Scotty)
This provides the Edinburg or Edinburgh history of the town spelling I wrote about in an earlier post. This is from the town web site itself:
Quote: "The name originally ended in "h" when it was first platted and when the town was incorporated in 1853. The "h" was dropped from the name in 1899 and was missing for the next 77 years. In 1977 the Town Council restored the "h" to Edinburgh's name." End Quote.

Yes, George. It is Jane & Dennis Edwards. I have e-mailed her copy of the post card photos and she is very excited to get them. I have invited her to visit the web site and come aboard as a member. She has lots of history on the house.
