Can You Believe This Number All At The Time Shown Below? (March 2008) On Mar 10, 2008 there were 106 folks (@ 11:17 am) nationwide reading and posting on the Columbus Historical Message Boards. I have never seen that number before in three years. Thanks to David Sechrest, Richard the Administrators of these boards for making such a success for residents, former residents and people interested in Columbus Indiana history. The Talley: Most users on-line was 106, Mar 10, 2008, 11:17am (I may be wrong there might have been 130 at one other time) Come on folks contribute words or pictures to the boards!

Hi,
I never went to your school but have been checking up on this directory thing. It appears that they may also be involved in debt collections. They use the response to find phone numbers and other contact information. The only ones in our area (S. Calf) who have received these inquiries are those who owe... curious! Jut thought you might want to know.

THOUGHT I WOULD ADD MY TWO CENTS I RECEIVED THE ALUMNI CD ALTHOUGH IM NOT SURE THE PRICE WAS WORTH IT, I HAVE BEEN USING THE INFO TO CONTACT OLD FRIENDS AND ALSO HAVE BEEN SHARING OLD MEMORIES. I HAVE CONTACTED 4 OF MY OLD FRIENDS IN CALIFORNIA BUT I DIDN'T ASK THEM IF THE COLLECTIONS PEOPLE WERE AFTER THEM. ALTHOUGH THERE IS INFO ABOUT PHONE NUMBERS AND ADDRESSES THE PERSON WAS NOT REQUIRED TO GIVE ANY INFORMATION THAT COULDN'T BE TAKEN FROM THE WHITE PAGES. THE EXCEPTION WAS E MAIL ID, SOME PEOPLE SENT THAT INFO SOME DIDN'T I MIGHT ADD THAT I HAVE VOLUNTEERED TO GIVE INFO THAT WAS GIVEN BUT I WOULDN'T DO THAT WITHOUT CHECKING WITH THAT PERSON FIRST. Hi Doug: I don't seem to be able to connect much to your point about using this site for debt collection. The site is a historical message board and many folks don't sign on or even join. The Talley that I posted before your comment was the number of readers that had viewed the site, not whom are members, but guest readers. I suppose if a person is behind in debts they can assume most anything in these times of our country. However, I don't see any merit to what you have presented. I future suspect that most members and guests are present or former residents of Columbus, Bartholomew County and Edinburg. If you are talking about the former student directory this board had nothing to do with that publication. I have heard that most folks opted out not to publish anything. It was a personal choice for people to call and give information. The historical board didn't encourage anyone to call them and release personal information.

Well, I am rebuilding the website pages for the umteenth time. I'm playing around with the welcome page again, as I want to add Google search and AdSense, which I signed up for. Maybe if you all click on the links, it will help in the cost of things.
I'm building the pages this time using Adobe's Dreamweaver program. This is a new program for me, and right now, things are slow going. I'm working on the code and layout and getting used to using Dreamweaver. I've worked with it for about 3 hours so far and I do like how things are turning out.
So hopefully in the next few days, the website pages will be finished. The yearbook section's going to be a chore, as many pages as it has and I want to include Google's AdSense on all my webpages. The last total page count was 1,731, and that doesn't include some. I use FreeFind to index my website. The company also provides the search engine I use. Since I'm running real close to the max amount for keeping the service free, I don't have FreeFind index some of the sections of the website. I have a feeling that once all the yearbooks get added, I'm going to have to pay for the service.
I've decided to go ahead and add Columbus High School Yearbooks through 1973. That was the last graduating class of Columbus Senior High School students, and a year after Columbus EAST opened its doors.
I have no intention of doing any yearbooks beyond the 1973 date. That will cover all the graduation classes while Columbus only had one high school.*
*with the exception of East being open in 1972...

Quick question here: Is anyone else having troubles keeping the post you are reading from scrolling back to the previous one? Its been happening to me each time I come to the Historic Columbus boards. I will be reading and all of a sudden, the whole thing will scroll backwards and I am once more in the previous post or possibly even two previous posts. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with my computer (AGAIN) or is it just a temporary glitch? Thanks. Babs

Babs, I'm no expert, but the same thing happens to me when photos are still opening in a particular thread. Once everything is opened, the posts stabilize.

Thanks Gregg, but it isn't that. I will be reading and the post just literally slides backwards for me. In this particular thread, I was reading the post David put in about him rebuilding the website, so no pictures were involved. I think it took me two or three times to read through that thread because of the scrolling backwards. However, I will try to wait and see if it does just happen when pictures are involved. I do remember one thread was where Richard had posted the index for the Sanborn maps, and yes it did happen in that area and the whole index was not yet in so maybe I will try to be a bit more patient. Thanks again.

Welcome Vicki, but I don't remember Bobby Kennedy in Columbus. Now, the future President John F. Kennedy did visit Columbus and the Columbus High School, well before he was elected. He came to our convocation before 1960 and spoke to all the students in the now Columbus North Gym. He was a class act and smooth and definitely a political figure for sure. Comment: We welcome all your comments and input for our Historical Columbus Net. Thanks again............ Bob

However John Kennedy DID NOT speak. He had had a sore throat and was under doctor's orders to NOT DO ANY PUBLIC SPEAKING. One of his assistants read his comments, then a few teachers and students got to meet him afterwards. He was an exciting personage to see, especially for someone having grown up in Columbus, IN. My next "meeting" with him came after he won the election and was president. I was attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY. It was November 1992 at the Army/Navy Game in Philadelphia, PA. The entire corps of cadets and the entire bridgade of midshipmen were both on hand. President Kennedy sat on the Navy side the 1st half and on the Army side the second half. A good time was had by all. The only bad news was, Navy won. Jerry McCoy Hendersonville, NC 5/25/08

Sorry Bob, I put the wrong year for the football game. It was 1962 not 1992. Navy won anyway. :-(

I am not sure where this should be posted. Often we read of computer crashing and much data being lost. I have wondered how much of this great site is backed up in case something like that happened. It would be tragic to lose all this history. You folks at the head probably already have tasken care of such a happening, but was just wondering. Bob Lane

Bob Lane Hi Bob--------and certainly a very good and important thought. My understanding via Richard and David------with the cooperation of the library---------the site is 'backed up.' Am sure that Richard and David can explain it much better than I can. Nanc

Yes, the library did embark on an archiving process back in September of 2007. Myself and the Library Director met with David and Richard to discuss the options of making back ups of this information for future generations. The library bought software and I proceeded to archive the entire Historic Columbus Indiana Message Board. I made a copy on CD and gave it to David to keep with his files. It was our intention to do this on a regular basis and store the files on our secured and backed up servers. However, everything did not go according to plan.
This message board is hosted by a company called ProBoards. They make message boards available to individuals and groups at the right price…free. Unbeknownst to us however, they consider archiving the site a violation of their terms of service. Even more troubling, they perceived my archiving as an attack on their servers. As such, they blocked access to the site from all library computers. Several attempts by David and me to assure them that we did not know it was a violation and that we were not trying to cause damage to their site fell on deaf ears. The library was without this precious resource for several months as we tried to get this resolved. Thankfully, our access was finally restored!
However, this incident has caused us to rethink the entire archiving procedure. An electronic backup done by us is out of the question at this point. So, we had to look at other ways. There is a project called the Internet Archive (http://www.archive.org), sponsored by many entities including the Library of Congress, Hewlett Packard, and the National Science Foundation that aims to archive the internet. If you put the address in the “Wayback Machine,” it will take you to various versions of the site over the years. Of course in testing it for this post, the site does not appear to be working! I assure you that it did work at one time, and I am hopeful that they are just doing updates or something. When I tested it, it seemed to be about 4 months behind in terms of the last archive. However, everything was fully preserved.
I would be happy to entertain any other suggestions that people have. At the very least, we have in our possession the site as of September 27, 2007.

As some message board readers may be aware, this past week, RER/Bob made quite a wonderful ‘find,’ LIFE/Time photos of Columbus in 1950, over 200 of them………….as several of us ‘thought’ about these photos, we decided in the interest of making sure that using them was ‘legal,’ we sent an inquiry directly to LIFE/Time for their input and permission to use the photographs.
We have had wonderful responses and cooperation from LIFE/Time. They have given us the guidelines that they expect us to use in order to post these photos on the message boards for the enjoyment of all, as well as, us offering the ability to have readers add historical comments that clarify the photographs.
Bear with us as we work to fine tune this process so that anything we offer on the message boards is clearly within the LIFE/Time guidelines. Check back frequently to see how we are progressing on this endeavor…………as these photos so offer a beautiful look back to 1950 in Columbus.
This is truly exciting, it really is. Photos will be forthcoming, just give us time to put it all into place. Watch for a new thread---------LIFE/Time Photos 1950, or something similar.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to one and all, and this date, March 17, 2009, is surely a red letter day, no, make it a green letter day for the Historic Columbus Message Boards. I say GREEN, because it is ‘all systems go.’
As of this morning, shortly after 9 AM/EDT, we were granted a final approval by the LIFE/Time representative, Mr. Jeff Burak. The test photos that RER/Bob currently has posted are totally within the guidelines required to make use of these wonderful photographs of Columbus in 1950. I must add here, it has been sheer joy to work with Mr. Burak, he has been so helpful, and almost more importantly, so very prompt in responses to us. Thanks, Mr. Burak.
Thanks, too, to Bob and Richard, as they burned a lot of midnight oil last night to get ‘us close’ to a final product, and this morning Bob made the final adjustments Mr. Burak expected. NOW, the next step----------we need to determine exactly where this LIFE/Time collection of 1950 Columbus photos needs to be on the message boards.
March 18, 2009 update: The thread for the LIFE photos is now in place, check it out in Columbus by Decades.
Altho’ not a great deal of time has passed since we first were aware of this valuable collection of Columbus photos, many hours have been spent to reach a final product, legally suitable for posting on the boards. In the very near future, bearing in mind that a few of us need to catch our breath, complete information will be available and we can begin to post these photographs for historical input.
This has been a ‘fun ride,’ for sure. With even more excitement to follow. Be prepared to add your historical thoughts to these photographs. It is all about preserving Columbus history………………

Once again, 'garbage posts' are on the message boards........very annoying, and frustrating, however administrators will remove them ASAP. In the meantime, please do read the valuable posts on the boards. Most recent posts are in the 'Copyrighted LIFE 1950 photos' thread found on the home page, please just go directly to those posts, and ignore the 'current garbage.' Thanks. Nanc This is the location where this 'garbage posts' are originating. We think is is best if you don't click any of the posted links.
