First off, I want to thank everyone who has helped to support the Historic Columbus Indiana website in the past.
This Board has been set up to acknowledge those individuals and businesses that have contributed to our overall success!

Hello all, I’m assuming you came to this Message Board from the www.historiccolumbusindiana.org home page. That site is the work of our Webmaster, Mr. David Sechrest. On May 4, 2003, David was taken to the Hospital for emergency surgery for appendicitis. During the operation the surgeons found his appendix had burst and part of his small and large bowels had been destroyed and had to be removed. Since that time, David has only been able to work a few hours at a time. His attempt to receive disability is stalled. He was hospitalized just days before he was scheduled to be interviewed. His interview was rescheduled after missing that appointment! I was in a local business last week and was talking about the site and the proprietors gave me a donation to assist in the maintenance of this site. I would like to use this thread to thank this business for its donation to this web site: HARDY’S COIN SHOPAuthorized Member/Dealer of NGC U. S. A VERY SPECIAL "THANK YOU " To the Hardy's !! Thank you Richard for posting this !!You might consider listing the process for making a donation also. I believe you have set up a fund at a local Bank ? If so... that information should be noted in this folder. I'm not sure if you set up the possibility of payments being received at paypal or not? . For those who may wish to assist with the site...please check back later to see this information. SEE Message BELOW Blessings and soft hugs..... Margo John 1:16

The Quest For Columbus Indiana History
The quest for Columbus Indiana history is in the hands and minds of the unwritten members, and non-members of this board. We urge that you write your experiences and knowledge about our great city, and not just read others opinions and experiences.
Oh, yes it is sometime interesting to read the posts and have the remembrances of the subject, but you have more to add, and maybe you have not contributed. I among others urge you to post your memories so your family and friends for many years out can enjoy the benefits of what you have to say.
Your, family, friends, kid and grandkids will possibly enjoy what you have to say about Columbus Indiana in the past, present and the future. What a great gift you can contribute to your community, and enrich more history of Columbus.
You don't have to use your real name and we don't really get concerned, if that is your wish. You can call yourself an initial or any name; but what you have inside your mind is the importance of "what we don't know."

To All Readers and Friends On This History Board
I was asked within the week how I keep up with the boards? The suggestion was "that I can't catch up with the number of posts that you have put on the boards." I thought about that for few days and came up with these responses:
(1) First, I joined the boards almost 3 years ago, which means I have had time to think in-depth of Columbus and Bartholomew County from a far distance on the East Coast area.
(2) It pushed me into reading historical books and research to be able to add something to the Columbus Historical Boards.
(3) I have maybe over 1435 posts on this Historical Board and have deleted probably 300 posts. But, many are of low quality in content and some are interesting and some more interesting than others.
(4) This Historical Message Board is not a contest of who can post the most posts, but who can contribute to the board of their past and present knowledge of Bartholomew County and Columbus Indiana.
(5) I am not the best English thinking and writer on these boards. I have made many mistakes in the wonderful English language, but at least I have tried to be factual and accurate to some degree.
(6) I have repeated myself in various posts at times and added to previous posts, but I have been informative to an additional degree on the same subject. If I bore someone on a certain topic or subject, then I apologize and I suggest you skip my post and press on to other items.
(7) It is sad and unfortunate that so many folks may be reading this history message board, but never adds anything to the listed topics. The hurt in this is they either don't care to because they may feel they are beyond that, or they are scared to make an appearance of words on the boards. But, one thing if you are reading this post and not posting anything; then my point is well said.
(8) Richard told me about 3 years ago. If you don't write anything then how will your grandkids and my grandkids be able to read anything beyond history books about Columbus Indiana and Bartholomew County if you don't write?
(9) Well, Richard was right and I have pressed forward with my postings of some interests and some that are not interesting. But, my question to all you readers that never post: What can you add to these boards and what can you leave to your kids and grandkids as Richard so well stated?
(10) So, the bottom-line doesn't mean much except what do you have to add to the Columbus Indiana and Bartholomew County History Message Boards?
In closing, I would say enjoy the Columbus Historical Message Boards. I would urge you to join and post your memories, and thoughts to add to the wonderful taste of Columbus Indiana culture of the past, and even the present. It is not a game of whom has the high numbers of posts and names, but what people have to say about the history of a great place we live in, or came from.
Note: This post is a re-post from yesterday because I posted it in the wrong posting area.

Quoted in part, from Bob/RERs post: To All Readers and Friends On This History BoardI was asked within the week how I keep up with the boards? Note: This post is a re-post from yesterday because I posted it in the wrong posting area. Bob, a wonderfully well thought out post. Each and every one of us has 'within our abilities' to contribute to the boards in some way. Think about some of what the 'regulars' post---------Bob catches the extensive research and covers a lot of sports; George contributes wonderful fire department info and shares his postcard collection; Richard, is our 'photographer about town' (and a real 'jack of all trades' on the boards) and makes his way around the area documenting subjects as they come up; David, well, he just 'knows the ropes' and how to delve deep into the local archives for information; Rhonda is the expert when it comes to historical markers and local buildings worthy of acknowledgement; Ricky, our non-native Columbus person, who probably knows more facts about Columbus than many of us; Babs always has a good story to tell, and taps into her dad's brain to verify various items, and then shares------------just as a few examples of the 'specialities.' Many of the rest of us contribute when a post comes up that triggers our memory bank. It is the energetic exchange and debate of many subjects that makes it fun. When the final piece of a 'message board puzzle falls into place,' it is truly a thrill. For me, I love to 'discover a treasure or a photo that my mom has saved' that is worthy of sharing with others. Lots of jokes come across through our email box, often making fun of 'computers and the confusion' they manage to create, as well as ones about 'old timers and their computers.' Yep, we are old timers, folks, with lots of memories. Don't let a computer baffle you------and if you have a problem, there are folks on the boards that will help you through the rough spots-----------plunge right ahead and master it------------remember it is not only the memories that you have stored in your brain, it is also how you 'manage these memories' that will keep your brain young, useful, and hopefully avoid those dementia demons. If you think that you are just too 'slow' on the computer to contribute, start out with just a short memory, remember, practice makes perfect and your typing/keyboarding skills will improve if you work at it. I also have to add-------------it is a sure guarantee you will make some wonderful new friends, as well as 'catch up' with friends from the past if you post on the boards. A perfect example of that is Jack, who just recently started posting. Way to go, Jack. Another way to think about these message boards---------------we are 'creating an on-line history of Columbus and Bartholomew County.' Not in a hard cover book that perhaps only a few may be able to access, but an on-going collection of history via a true grass roots effort and available to the world and always at our fingertips to read and enjoy. An Interesting Analysis of The Board Posts "The Columbus Historical Board Is 2nd To None Nationwide" As of this date there have been approximately 5,855 individual posts on this Columbus Indiana historical board. Now, using a minimum of 10 minutes to write, type, proof and post it might take 10 minutes to post one item under any subject. However, many posts take hours of research and posting time adds to it. But, for the sake of brevity I will use a standard of 10 minutes to complete one post. Now if we multiple 5,855 posts times 10 minutes, then that would equal 58,550 minutes of posts. Now, if we divide 58,550 by 60 minutes (l hour) we get 40 hours worth of posting or reading on the boards. Now, if we divide 40 hours by 24 hours then we have almost 2 days of solid creation and typing of all the posts. So, you say so what? Well, that means if you could stay up for 40 hours just writing and reading all the current posts, it would take you almost 2 days to write and read everything posted on the boards. Now, keep in mind you wouldn’t get any sleep for 40 hours and no breaks or coffee or eating etc. So, the bottom-line is what Nanc, Richard, Babs, David, George and many others have stated: “You can spend days or weeks reading the content in this Columbus Historical Site.” But, you also can spend days and weeks researching your mind of the past, and reading to add to the boards. A better example is this: If you write or read on the boards 2 hours a day, then it would take you 20 days to either write or read the posts. Further Insight: A post with pictures and writing can take up 20 minutes to an hour sometimes to post. Posting pictures is not an easy task, but worse if more than one. Some pictures have to be either expanded or reduced in size to even post on the pages. Even though I was conservative about the 10 minutes for each, it can take up to 30 minutes or more based on what you are trying to accomplish. Research for example in the Library of Congress is about as bad as trying to understand the decisions of our Congress at times. Many hours of books, internet and Congressional files can consume a lot of hours, and not turn up anything of value or interest. David, Richard, Nanc and George among others have researched the Columbus Library, Bartholomew County Historical Society, Courthouse Records and many other places that requires a lot of travel time, gasoline and researching. All of the posters have tried there hands at the Indiana Historical Society Web Site. Richard loves the challenge of going after the pictures of the past and the stories related. Last week he drove to 16th Street and took some great pictures of past businesses and shared them with board members through email. We had great conversations and memories about those places. This is an example of getting involved in the boards and the challenges and information you can come across. Example of Time Spent On One Subject: I thought the Cerealine story was so interesting and my lacking of knowledge; so I took the project for 15 months to find, purchase items and research the Cerealine story posted under industries. Pictures were hard to find, but in the files of the Library of Congress I found a lot of pictures and some information. I have no idea how many hours were spent on Cerealine but it was entertaining and a challenge and I would love to do it all over again. Even today I keep searching for Cerealine items. At some point Rickey said we need a dedicated page for that company. David in turn agreed and all the posts of the past were consolidated into the Cerealine industrial site. This is how subjects get established at times by someone posting things relative over and over again until a "dog house" is established as its home. Subjects Are Ongoing Posts: All posts are ongoing and subject to changing, updating, additions, modifications and deletions. This is what makes the challenge even more interesting and rewarding. Nanc Sums Up Her Thoughts & Experiences Here:“I started on the boards almost 3 years ago this coming March. And really at that point the message boards were in their infancy. I spent days and days just exploring the home page of all of David's collections, and this started adding memories. One really does sort of have to consider 'the boards and posting' as a hobby, just as one would like for scrap-booking or tying fish lures (am not a fisherman, obviously) or doing some kind of word project or knitting. It is all in the eyes of the beholder, I guess. I just prefer doing something that in the big picture offers to others. Kind of like my therapy dog work, as well.”

Dear friends, I have been wondering, as I updated my memories writings, about another possible thread for our site. In reading the Kentucky Explorer magazine, each month they print a reader submitted article titled, “ I Remember____” This would be one’s commenting what they remember of their dad, mom, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, neighbor etc. They are usually less than a page long. We might need to limit length if it would pose a problem. I have found the articles very interesting and educational. Perhaps some you could comment or add suggestions about such a thread. I don't know if this is where I should have submitten the thought, it could be moved to a better spot if needed. Bob Lane

In thinking more on the post I did yesterday, I will add to that the following. The Kentucky Explorer magazine is very much like this site but for the entire state of Kentucky. The "I remember____" pages are not about people I knew, but about people connecting with people. Things people did either because they wanted to, or because it was necessary for survival or love of family, or pride of city, state or country. Many things make someone you knew stand out for you. Maybe those "things" would remind us of what your loved ones had to do in their life. It could be another way to share the past. Bob Lane

We had a small meeting tonight, more social than anything else, but some tentative plans for next year's event have been set in motion with more details to follow as soon as possible. At 6 p.m. on Thursday evening about ten die hard members of the HCI committee met at Memphis BBQ on 25th Street. We had a good time talking and catching up.
For any who are interested the next meeting will be on December 11th at John and Marilyn Rondot's home in Timbergate. They decorate their lovely home with many Christmas trees so it is a real treat to see and everyone loves to go to their home and enjoy their hospitality.

Dear friends of HCIWeb, A few weeks back the Republic ran several interviews with survivors of the 1929 depression. I wonder if this would be an interesting theme for the message board? There are a goodly number of folks locally that did experience that hard time, and other similar downturns after WW2. Maybe notes from those who experienced such times and children of those who could share how they survived those times. Bob Lane

I never cease to be amazed at these Historic Columbus Message Boards, and the valuable contribution they make for so many....... You never know that which, to you may seem so unimportant, but is just sort of a part of the story/memory that you relate, and can be just a HUGE piece for someone else's 'puzzle.' That happened this week to me----------something that I had mentioned in a long ago post, and mostly just in the way of identifying people in a photo---------was just the ONE piece that someone else was needing for their 'puzzle.' It has been a 'real adventure,' and with the able researching skills of another message board contributor, in just a couple of days, more information became available to a new message board member than she had found in over 30 years of investigation. WOW! So, I urge everyone to put their memories, photos, etc. into place on these Message Boards------------we are preserving our roots and Columbus history------------and so many benefit. I must also thank David Sechrest for having this vision/Message Boards, as a tool for us to use. Nanc
