I can't remember if this was ever discussed here before but does anyone know of any Sears catalog houses that were built in Columbus and still standing? I have had a number of visitors ask me during our tours. There seems to be a great deal of interest in these houses across the country.

Sears catalog homes were discussed on the message board I had prior to this one. I didn't save any of those old message board pages. Rhonda, and, if I remember correctly, George, know where a few are. One location is Lafayette, across from Donner Park, I think. Rhonda, is the other one we talked about so long ago on 22nd Street, also across from the park? Or were both homes on Lafayette?

Anyone here familiar with that two story block home on State Street? It would be on your right if travelling east. You can't miss it. It almost looks like it's out of place.
When I had the old message board, someone wrote to me and told me that it was a Sears catalog home. If I remember correctly, the current owner told them it was brought in by train and assembled.
EC took some pictures of it, and I sent them to a well known Sears catalog home expert in Illinois. She was kind enough to reply back and said it wasn't a catalog home that Sears ever offered.
While it isn't a Sears home, it might have been Montomgery Wards or possibly, built to order...
EC, do you still have a picture of the home I'm talking about?
It has a twin, on one of those side streets, possibly Hinman? Jones? I can't remember!

I recall that there was much discussion at the time about the Sears homes, Harry McCawley had a article in the paper about the homes. There was thought to be two of the homes in the Donner Park area. The location of 22nd and Lafayette ave. was mentioned and also just 22nd St. I remember that one of the homes was said to be near former mayor, Robert Stewart's home on Franklin St. I am really not certain about these homes, there would be a record of there construction some where, maybe start at the building inspectors office, but going that for back it could have been the city electricians office that approved the building permit.

This is a Sears home that is currently for sale. It is located at 2026 Lafayette Avenue. The reason I know it's a Sears home is because it was on our Columbus Herb Society garden tour about 3 years ago and the owners told us about the Sears connection.

We lived at 2026 Lafayette for over 20 years. Yes it is a Sears home. When we were remodeling, I removed some of the woodwork and found the Sears shipping labels. It is in the Sears home catalog at the Library, but the model shown is the "right hand" side model where the porch is off centered to the right. Frank Adams was our architect who designed the addtion we added in 1975. The folks who bought the house from us were the ones who added the extra landscaping.
