Here is another large plat map for anyone interested. This covers part of the city of Columbus from 1879. I believe I've posted part of this before, but never the entire page (or as much I can fit on the scanner). Interesting to note that F. J. Crump home just above 10th Street. Francis J. Crump I owned property all throughout Bartholomew County (as well as other states). By far though, the most property he owned was in Columbus Township. I know you can't read the words, but in looking at where the Crump Theatre would be some 11 years after this map, it makes sense to me now why the names of the businesses are written as they are: each fall underneath each arch that went across the top of the bulding, thus each arch was in its own way, a separate business in one building. scale: 400' = 1 inch

On David's most recent map posting, the property just below 10th & Washington, listed as Wm. J. Lucas, is my great great grandfather. Capt. Lucas married Mary Elizabeth Crump, the youngest daughter of Francis J. & Emelia Smith Crump. In the past, I've posted several photos of the Lucas' elaborate home elsewhere on this site.

I'M NOT SURE IF THIS HELPS BUT IN THE 1920 CENSUS WHERE I SEARCHED FOR MY UNCLE WHO PURCHASED ACRAGE FROM JOHN CRUMP AND FARMED SOME OF CRUMPS LAND SHOWS MY UNCLE AND HIS WIFE AND TWO OF HIS CHILDREN VERY NEAR ON THAT CENSUS JOHN W CRUMP AND WIFE DAISY O AND TWINS SONS BORN ABOUT 1900 CRUMP WAS 46 AS WAS DAISY IF THIS IS THE ONE THAT DIED IN 1920 HE DIED SHORTLY AFTER THE CENSUS AFTER LOOKING AT THE TIMELINE THIS CANT BE THE JOHN YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT BUT MAY BE THE ONE LIVING AT CRUMP CORNER John Crump timeline as I understand it: 1843--born on the Crump Homestead 1857--moves into town. 4th St., across from the 1st National Bank 1861--goes to Madison. enlists in the union army 1862--discharged from the army due to sickness. returns home. 1863--moves to Marysville KS 1865--marries Emma Webber @ Marysville KS 1866--returns to Columbus with wife. stays less than one year. moves back to KS 1869--moves back to Columbus for good. reports state he farmed the old Crump homestead 1887--moves into the house on Lafayette. Stays there until his death in 1920. Considering we have the 1879 plat map showing his residence, just maybe he moved to the house on 25th and Marr Rd at some point after that.(?) Then, stayed there until he moved in to the home on 7th and Mechanics(?) More thinking aloud here. . . and a trip to the Courthouse if I can ever get this pain somewhat under control <sigh> BTW, that 1879 Plat Map I posted: The city had just changed the names of the East-West streets to numbers before the first edition was printed.

Can you see why I have such a hard time with my family history??! There are so many John Crumps, Francis Crumps, and Mary Crumps that it's enough to drive a person crazy! Pauline Crump once told me that every other generation had a Francis J. Crump, with a Francis T. Crump in each of the OTHER generations. AHHH!

Boy, ain't that the truth? ? ? From what Ricky and Jack have posted (at least at the present time), it appears that it was a different John Crump at 25th and Marr Rd. NOT the John SMITH Crump of Crump Theatre, Belvedere Hotel fame.

Regarding the same name among family members it must've been a common practice in those days because I know there are so many Nancy's, John's, Elizabeth's etc in my family. I often wondered if it was a family tradition or if they just liked naming their children after say a favorite cousin, uncle, niece or whatever. If you go to the cemetery and begin looking you will find this happened a lot back in those days or at least I know it did in my family especially on my dad's side...either the Kirts or the Freese side.
Very difficult indeed to try and figure out who is who! :-)

Found this on-line, and wanted to share. This is just one version. Apparently, families with German heritage, and families with Irish/Welsh heritage, had their OWN version of naming patterns, too! This is why there are so many "repeats" in our family trees!
Naming Patterns For Children
1st son = father's father 2nd son = mother's father 3rd son = father 4th son = father's oldest brother 5th son = father's 2nd oldest brother or mother's oldest brother 1st dau = mother's mother 2nd dau = father's mother 3rd dau = mother 4th dau = mother's oldest sister 5th dau = mother's 2nd oldest sister or father's oldest sister

I see that the Crumps spoken of, are from the States, did any of them immigrate from England? My Grandparents William Henry Crump , was born in Coventry, Warwickshire, England, his Father was William Crump as well, the mother was Elizabeth Crump. Would be interesting if they were from the same line of the Crump's (I live in Canada)

Great job! I can add my own branch of the Crumps: My grandmother Was Marjorie Weller Newton (b. May 12, 1896 OR 1898; D. CA. 1983), daughter of Minnie Crump and Joseph Weller. Her husband was Harry Groll Newton; their marriage was dissolved around 1923. I do not know any details about the death of a son, Joseph Newton, though had the impression this Joseph was Marjorie's brother.
Marjorie's only surviving child was Margaret ("Peggy") Newton Stevenson, born June 1, 1919; died March 8, 2013. She married Robert L. Stevenson on December 29, 1939 or 1940. Her marriage terminated by divorce in 1976 or 1977 (clerical issues in the court make the exact date uncertain to me).
Margaret's two children are and were: Joseph N. Stevenson, b. August 4, 1943 (the instant writer). He married Carol Oshiro on September 18, 1965. They have one daughter, Sandra Leilani Stevenson Schoreder, b. June 12, 1966. She married Jeffrey Schroeder Oct. 1, 1994. No children.
Marjorie Kay Stevenson, b. March, 1945, d. apprx June 20, 1975. Two children: 1. Christina Dawn Roberts Ghuman Tipton, b. 1965; by Bernard Roberts of Nashville, her husband. Christina assumed the surname Ghuman after Marjorie Kay's divorce and remarriage. Her husband is Davin Tipton. They have no children. 2. Patricia Shawn Ghuman. Daughter of Marjorie Kay's second husband, Victor (Amarjit Singh) Ghuman. I am uncertain of her birth date in 1974, She has two childfren: `A: Cody Ghuman, who assumed Historian mother's name after her divorce from her first husband. B. Gabrielle Ghuman. I am not certain of the birth dates of these two offspring.
