Hi, and welcome back David and George, and I pray that all health issues are under control. Know that you have both been in my thoughts and prayers. Thanks to all for confirming some of my memories. And JK, that one "big" Kroger's is the only one that I can recall. And Gregg, I don't remember the inside of the Standard store at all. While on grocery stores-----am thinking there was one out toward 25th St., perhaps called "Ricketts." Seems to me that it was the only one open (probably late, late 40s into early 50s) on a Sunday. My mom only had access to a car on Sundays, so often on a Sunday afternoon, after church, or horseback riding, Mom and I would go there to do her shopping. Love all the input!! That is what makes these message boards so very special. Nanc

YES,there was a Rickets grocery. My husband and I shopped there a lot, could get pork shoulder, hamburger and jowl bacon,3lbs for a dollar. Potato's were 39 cents for 10lbs I would go to Five Coates on first street, (I think) and get eggs 5 dozen for a dollar. You could also buy small chickens for a cheap price. We ate pretty good for about 5.00 Katie

Ricketts grocery as I recall was located on Cottage Ave. between 24th and 25th St. on the west side. The store owner was Carl Ricketts and his son Gordon also worked in the store, as I remember the store opened in the late 1940's and was a grocery until some time in the late 50's at which time the building was divided and Mr. Ricketts had a Liquor store in the south half and doctors Rank and Rau were in the north part of the building. The Liquor store was there for several years.

The last time I was in Rickett's would have been late February of 1968. I had just been discharged from the army. I was 21 years old, and I hadn't renewed my civilian driver's license yet. The guy behind the counter would not accept my military license or ID card. Hence, I didn't drink any beer that night! I also never shopped at Rickett's again. I do recall that we used to stop either there or at Riley's IGA on Central on the way home from church for groceries quite often.
