Thanks, Bob, for posting about Karl McCan. Even with my ever so brief a time at CHS, Mr. McCan and his efforts made quite an impression on me. I believe that the junior high art teacher was perhaps a 'Jane Shields' and her classroom was next to Mr. McCan's. I can recall the hallway leading to their classrooms being lined with the high school art students work for the proms. Seems to me they were often large paper mache figures-------was there ever a prom in the late 40s/early 50s with a 'carousal theme?' And a jungle theme? For me, I know that Mr. McCan made an impact on me, not that I am all that artistic, but his assignments were always so appropriate. One, being to use your initials to come up with a 'signature.' That 'assignment' is one that I still use when I sign items of importance. Anyone else recall gathering up your drawing board and going out into the neighborhood to sketch and then use watercolors to complete the drawing of a home or building that was unique? He also assigned a project to create a design that would be appropriate to use on fabric/textiles. Another fun experience. Super guy, multi-talented. Thanks for jarring those memories, Bob. Nanc ;-)

This is a re-post because I posted this in the wrong area on the board. The other post was deleted. David Sechrest said: 1952 Log Well, Nanc I remember the field trips of several old homes near the schools. One at corner of Maple Street and 25th Street was McCan's favorite near-by place, for the outdoor drawing boards and watercolors etc. However, today the house has be torn down. I remember Mr. McCan saying once that "I hope they never tear down this nice house" because it will effect my field trips outdoors and laughed. Anyway, at the new 25th Street school he continued jamming the halls like you said (at the old school) with prom things and paintings in preparation for various events. Interesting that you too had known him and was your teacher before moving. You know, we seem to always post things about sports, events, old Columbus History, famous residents and many more subjects, but I think we might think about continuing to recognize folks that didn't get much attention; but had a little inspiration to many youths of many years ago. Note: The house that was razed was a victorian home I think.

Joining Bob, in relocating a 'misplaced' post. N This is a re-post because I posted this in the wrong area on the board. The other post was deleted. Note: The house that was razed was a victorian home I think. The house I recall sketching and painting was west of the old high school, probably on 6th St., north side of the street, a brick home, with a sloping roof as part of the entrance. I believe that home still exists, but what with one way streets, here of late, I never actually drove by it to make sure. Pretty certain that somewhere in 'the treasures at my mom's' my 'rendering' of that house exists. Nanc

I SAW THAT MY MOTHER SAID SHE WAS IN 'ADJUSTMENT CLASS' I THINK WHAT THAT WAS WAS A CLASS OF PEOPLE WHO WERE MID TERMMERS AND THIS CLASS ALLOWED THEM TO MOVE AHEAD TO THE NEXT YEAR BY DOING TWO YEARS IN ONE SHE REFERRED TO THAT WHEN SHE WAS AT MCKINLEY IN THE MID TWENTIES SOME OF THOSE PICTURES ARE IN THE JEFFERSON SCHOOL CATEGORY Hi to all, and my memory says Wilson was a junior high, and as near as I can calculate was that in 1949 and 1950, when I went there. As I recall, it also housed, downstairs, an 'adjustment class' which in today's educational terminology would be some kind of special ed class. There is a real slim possibility that there might of been one 6th grade class, am thinking that it was taught by Esther McClure, mother of Sue Ann. Can't really verify that as both Sue Ann and her mom are gone now. Know that Sue's mom did substitute teaching in the elementary schools before they moved to Albuquerque, NM, at about that 49-50 time period. Her class in the Wilson building was also downstairs as I recall. and I don't recall it being a class that 'moved' like the rest of them did. 6th grade, a maybe. Nanc

I'm racking my brain...
What is/was the name of the elementary school out west of town (farther out than Booth-Setser)? It was on the south side of Hwy 46 just a mile or so east of the Grand View Lake turnoff.
Hi Mike!!
Lew Morris Class of 69
p.s. By the way, being the artist type I made 5 bucks a pair doing "senior cords". I still have mine, although I would be hard pressed to even get a leg in one side.

Mike stopped by this evening and brought his Senior Cords. I snapped a couple of pictures. They will be 50 years old in July!
