Hi, and this, too, I recall 'from my memory bank.' Within the Disaster thread-----------think mention of about 1947, and seems about right to my recollection. Now this would be a 'fun morning at the library to research,' IF one lived close enough!!!!!!!!!! Nanc ;-) David, That fire that Mike saw would have been the "Big Inch" natural gas line that ruptured in Reddington. It was so bright we first thought that there was a large fire in East Columbus, we at the time lived at 12th. and Lafayette Ave. It was so light around Reddington people said it was just like daylight. It seems to me the time was in the late 1940's?.

Yes, nanc. I do hope to get down to the library and look into this. I'll probably email Harry and see if he knows a date.
George, Richard, and others: did the CFD help out with this fire?

David,
Sorry, I can't recall if the CFD responded to this fire. I feel sure that Harry can find this article.

Wow! Pretty soon, you guys will have ALL the former Columbus fire trucks rounded up! It is so fun to mention the two that are downtown in station #1 when we do tours for the city.

Thanks Rhonda, very pleased to hear that the fire stations are included in the tours, yes, those two retired engines at station 1 have a lot of Columbus history in them, and now with the Seagrave we will have even more.

On the current tour route, we pass by old Station 2 on Central Avenue, Station 1, and IF we are ahead of schedule on the weekends, we also go past the new Station 2. I would really like to see us go back to an older version of the tour and get Station 4, and possibly Station 3, back on the route.

That is great Rhonda, I'm sure they would enjoy seeing those other stations.

This article appeared in the Evening Republican paper, seems the citizens don't want the horses replaced by motor fire trucks. The new American LaFrance ladder truck went in service May 3, 1918, and the new engine, also an American LaFrance went in service June 17, 1918. Chief Kailor has warned everyone to be on the lookout for them and to get out of their way. Chief Kailor said there would not be automobile parking on 5th. St. between Franklin and Washington St. in case of fire, the motor trucks will need a lot of room to get out in case of fire.

This article was in the Evening Republican paper July 17 1920. A couple years ago there was some local discussion about where the bell now in Donner Park originated from?, Commercial park was closed in about 1941 to make way for the new Christan Church site. At that time was the fire bell moved to Donner Park?.

The bell in question?, Shown here at station #2 at 27th and Central Ave. is the bell that came from old Station #2 at 13th and Hutchin Ave. The bell is now located at the new station #2 on Arnold St. at the air base. The city's first fire bell that was located in railroad square and later placed in city cemetery a long with a small cannon were sold for scrap for the war effort in1942. I don't believe Harry ever got a final answer about the bell. I still wonder if the bell now in Donner Park may be the bell from Station #1 on 5th. St.?.

What a sweet memorial and nice photo. I would love to hear more about Little George. He had a very kind face.
