Jerry Mccoy Hendersonville, NC (for the last two years) mccoyjl@juno.com. My Dad Bill McCoy (william) built the track on land owned by his uncle George. With help from Don Force for the earth moving. The seats were concrete blocks with board stringers on the hill sides. I remember making "flyers" from hand stamps to pitch out the windows of the small towns of bartholomew and surrounding counties. Dan Walls was a big help in getting the program started. Andy Granitelli and his "Roaring Roadsters" once came down to run a program to help out. My nephews have the family pictures similar to the ones posted on this site.

David Lange, I have lived just down stream from race track all my life. I am George McCoy's grandson. George owned the property the speedway at clifty was build on. My father Hubert Lange and mother Alverta McCoy had bought a right-a-way off of Birtha Stincamp for a road to go back to their house, which was West of George McCoys house. This is why there are two lanes with telephone and electric poles between them. I am the one who graded the lanes after the races. The last race I can remember was in 1963-1964. I remember my dad speaking of Bill McCoy. Feel free to email me if any questions you may have. Enjoyed all the pictures.

Hey guys, great site and forum. My grandfather had owned a construction business in the 40's-50's era here in columbus and at one time was partners with Jack Rhoades and a guy by the name of Teagarden. supposedly they are the ones who created the damn to form Terrace lake and the original Terrace lake road and at one time each owned 1/3 of the lake. unfortunately my grandfather passed in the early/mid 60's so i never got the chance to know the man therefore i cannot confirm any of the information im telling you and the only information i know of him is through my uncle. anyways my reason for posting was i remember a long time ago my uncle telling me that he remembered being with my grandfather when he and some other people took a generator and a bulldozer out somewhere here in columbus and build a small race track. i always assumed it was the old clifty track but upon reading previous post im starting to second guess my uncle weather he must be talking of another place or maybe just speaking to highly of his father. anywho i figured it wouldnt hurt to share this information. i also have some old photos laying around here somewhere of the old 25th st track and the indy speedway. its been so long since i have seen the photos that im unsure if i have any of clifty or not but will post when i have time to find them. also have a photo or 2 of my grandfathers business that i will also post on another topic.

Bobby Baker was a helluva race car driver on week ends. During the week he was a helluva fork lift operator at Reeves Pulley where we both worked.

I don't have any real vivid memories of the track like some here do, but I do know I was there at least once. It was probably a Sunday afternoon and what I DO remember was the utility poles in the middle of the road David Lange posted about. I was trying to come up with the name of a girl I went to school with who told me she lived back there and they used to play around the old track. I couldn't think of her last name until David posted. I believe it is her brother. Her name is Kathy. As you turned off of the highway onto the road that the drive back to the track was on, there was a small grocery store on the corner. It was a small two room structure, and had the simulated brick siding on it that looked like asphalt shingle paper, for lack of a better word. I am not sure if the owners lived in the back full time but the back was set up like a living quarters. I really doubt it because they had several children. The name of the family was stadtmiller, hope I spelled that correctly, and they had a son who was around my age. The father died and my next recollection of the family was that the widow and children lived in a huge two story house a couple of miles south, south of Mineral Springs. Someone has renovated the house and today it is beautiful. The old store was torn down in the 60's and a block building built on the site. One side was another grocery store but I don't recall what was on the other side. During the 70's it became a motorcycle shop. Have no idea what's there now, if anything.

I noticed we have a new member by the name of Eldon Goble, it has been many, many years, but that name rings a bell, would you have raced at the Columbus Speedway?

I watched Eldon Goble race at the Columbus Speedway in the early 50s. He never was able to catch Larry Crocket, but it wasn't for lack of trying. I moved away from Columbus in 1956 and lost contact. I don't know if Eldon continued with his racing career.

The following was in the Tim McKinney Auto Racing Column for The Republic on Saturday, February 26, 2011.
Saturday, March 12, 2001 is the date for Jerry Castor’s Old-timers Reunion at the Bartholomew County Fairgrounds. The 2011 Hometown Hero will be unknown until the reunion.
A replica of the sprint car of the first Hometown Hero Larry Crockett, 1955 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year will be displayed.

Mike Yates I guess I didn't know your dad, Emmet when I worked at Reeves but it's been a long time. I worked there 1951-1956.

Thanks George for posting this info and photos. This brings back a lot of memories for me. I attended races at both tracks as a youngster. We lived on 14th and union and across the street from Dan Walls, and I used to go over and watch them work on the race car,and then take it east on 14th street to test it.They would usually make a quick run over and back, then put it in the garage and close the door just before the police arrived. If memory serves me correctly,I think you were our paper boy in the early 50's.I think you were in my sister Betty's class. If it would be possible, would you be willing to share these photos with the attendees at the Columbus Oldtimers reunion being held at the Fairgrounds annually. This year it is on March 12th,one week from tomorrow. This is a well attended meeting each year, with race fans from all over the Midwest attending with their old racecars.
