George...thanx a lots for posting that library postcard...thats one thats hard to find. I guess I never quite figured out how that was positioned on the corner before and I didn't realize the old Tabernacle church was so close.
I really love the "new" library but it hurts that they had to take the old one down. Did they keep it open until the new one was finished or was it torn down first? Was there a controversy about taking out that wonderful old Carnegie building? Not a lot of interest in historical buildings back in the late sixties/early seventies... I was one of the morons who wanted to take out all the old...what were we thinking??

George, thanx for posting that Irwin Gardens postcard. I don't remember seeing that particular one before. When was the old Tabernacle torn down? You can date Irwin Garden cards by which church bell tower is showing. Anyone ever seen a picture showing both??
I always thought it was interesting how the Tabernacle church was so close to the Irwin house. There are pictures of Pastor Z.T. Sweeney as a dashing young man. I always thought that would be an interesting love story of how he courted and wed Linnie Irwin just across the street from his church.

Ricky, If I remember correctly the old library was open until the new one was completed, I went to the old one a lot when I was a boy. The new Christian Church on 5th St. was completed in 1942, as a young boy I watched it being built. The old Tabernacle Christian Church was took down soon after the war was over in 1945, there was a house next to the church on the corner of 6th. and Lafayette Ave that was also taken down and a small city park was built in that area next to the old library. Yes, I agree with you there has been several old homes and buildings in Columbus that should have been saved. I know we have a very fine city , one of the best, but we still need to save some of the old.

There was a lot of interest in the Library card, here is another one but not dated, if my memory is correct the car is a 1937 model so that would help date the card some what.
