George, For the life of me I can not recall the 25th Street bridge. I do know back when I was a little kid, anyone who lived up on or near 25th Street it was considered you were out in the "boonies". I had an aunt and uncle who lived on 25th Street and there was nothing across the street from them on the North side but fields. Also I had a cousin who lived in a small farm house, where the Burger King now sets, so we would've crossed the 25th Street bridge many times. I can still see that little farm house but I can not recall what the bridge looked like that we would've had to cross to get to their house.

david the reason everyone is having so much trouble with the bridge is, it could not possibly have been the 25th street bridge. There was not a bridge or even 31 at 25th street at that time. the bridge on 25th st was a big iron thing like the 31 bridge. at that time there was no over-pass either. Highway 31 came in town over what is now old 31 thru the bridge by the ball park on 8th st . thru town and out what is now 11. I think the bi-pass (as it was called) was done some time in the 40's or early 50's margie.

In answer to George's Question:
The money raised was super fast lead by the President of Arvin's Industries, Mr. Glenn Thompson. The Gym was built and finished in 1955 and the first basketball game was played in the same year.
The story goes that Bob Risk was the first Bulldog to make a shot in the new gym in 1955. There are many other stories of who was first, including the cheerleader's claims. The William Stearman addition was built many years later which included the pool and exercise rooms.

George, I love this post card. The Palms was where we went to celebrate a big event in our family and I remember it well. The pink decor is just like I remember it and brings back happy memories. Thanks so much for posting this.

Irwin Gardens at 5th and Lafayette Ave. Card is not dated. Is this looking to the east and the house shown on the S-W corner of 5th and Pearl St. ?, anyone.

That view is from the Irwin house looking towards the east. If that house is on the corner (5th and Pearl), there are some one-story apartments there now.

Referencing replies # 142 and 143, and it is much too early in this neck of the woods to go 'scrambling' through the photos I took this summer. AND actually, in looking, no need to, as check out reply # 81, page 6, and reply # 13, page 1. One---the 'building' accessed by the many stairs, in my 'eye' is more due east, and sort of 'makes the wall' on Pearl St. Two---I think the postcard picture is taken from that pillared area on the north side, with the actual home on the west side of the Gardens. Sort of 'behind and to the right' would be the Irwin home, from where this photo was taken. This area is visible in both the above references, and this postcard would be taken from the pillared area on the right in # 13. Three---since I see no 'entry gates' in this postcard, perhaps you could get a date of sorts, using some other postcard that actually includes the gates. In our frame of reference, we would pretty much be able to say the gates have been there definitely since the 40s. One other note, in Tamara's postcard book, she notes that the gardens were added in the 1910s. Lastly---and I really thought that most of the homes there on 5th St. across from Irwin Gardens were 'the same' as I had remembered. No, one more observation, in this most recent card posted, on the right hand side, there is an urn and an 'open' space, like no fence. Look at the 1923 card, on page one, in that area, I would say there were pillars for some kind of enclosure in that area. There, I warded off the 'dementia demons' for today, by combing through my brain and making it work. And my brain tells me that a message board member that 'no longer chooses to acknowledge birthdays,' is another year older today!!! Have a 'happy!' Nanc

On our way to church this morning, I took a peek into Irwin Gardens and just to set everyone's mind at ease, the columns you see is this post card are at the North edge of the property. The main house would be off to the left (or West) of this gazebo. It appears to me that the angle of the picture is looking more Eastward with a slight angle to the South. The house you see at the right of the card I believe is still there; it being right next door to the one story apartments Ricky mentioned. So that would be 5th Street running along in front of the gardens.

This is a picture of dad and I at Irwin Gardens, it appears to be in the pillared area where the photo for the post card was taken, but the sculpture is not shown in the post card. I will have to go down to the Gardens and check out the location. This picture would have been in the late 1930's, so I guess the Sculpture may have been moved,or removed altogether by now.

Absolutely, a great photo, George, and to 'figure it all out' definitely worth while. That is what it is all about-----putting the pieces of the puzzle together. Thanks for sharing this bit of extra history of Columbus. Nanc

Picture appears to be taken at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church at the west end of Main Cross St. looking to the east. The card is postmark 1912, but the photo appears to be a few years earlier than that date.
