Did anyone get a chance to visit with Betty and Norm Ryle and their extensive dispaly of Columbus items ?? I did not make it over to the table and I think most of us had to stay fairly close to our own. They are friends of mine and have been collecting items for quite a few years now. They have them on display at the Senior Center every once in a while and I enjoy looking at them in AC comfort. My. oh my ....how did we exist without AC in our early years Margo

Another local brand that was on display Saturday, July 15, 2006. I can recall seeing the Pennant brand in the 1960's. This display is the courtesy of Norman and Betty Ryle.

On July 21, 2006, Margo asked if anyone else took, some took pictures on July 15, 2006 celebration to post them so the venders and those who couldn’t attend that day, could see who was there and what was displayed.
I’m far from a professional photographer, but I have a few more photos. The contrast from the sun outside and the shade inside will make some hard to view.
I’ll start with pictures of the great music we had that day. Craig Thayer played at 3:00 P. M. and was followed by Mr. & Mrs. Tim Grimm at 6:30 P. M.. The brother of our Webmaster, Dale Sechrest completed the entertainment at 7:30 P. M..

Notice in the lower left of this picture. I believe that’s an Ice Pick with the holster. The four colored card next to it was used by the housewife to order the ice she needed for the Icebox. The color matched the number and the number was the amount, in pounds, that was needed that day. The milk man and the bakery man had to take a basket of the product to the door and read a note left in the milk box or behind the door, or knock on the door. The ice man knew how much ice to take to the door with him! Efficiency in the early days!

I finally got a chance to look at the DVD slide show which David produced...how impressive. Richard, that CDrom you gave us...what a treasure chest! Thank you both!
I just wished I had gotten involved earlier in helping plan and carry out the big day. Thanx again for letting me help out. It was a big success in my estimation.
I saw a picture of my buddy Rovenne Quigley speaking, what did she have to say? I must have been out traipsing thru the cemetery at that point.

I thought I would post here all the comments and compliments that have been appearing in The Republic's "Around Town" column about our First Event .
July 15th Saturday- - - Day of the EVENT
Orchids to .... Dave Sechrest and his planning committee for the hard work organizing the Celebrating Columbus History event at Donner Park, from Margo Hughey.
July 18th - - - Tuesday Orchids to... Tim and Jan Grimm, Dale Sechrest and Craig Thayer for the terrific music at the Columbus; Celebrating Our History event, from Babs Olkiewicz.
July 19th - - - Wednesday Orchids to ...… all who provided entertainment, displayed items or participated in any way at the Historic Columbus Indiana Celebration, from Margo Hughey
July 20th - - - Thursday Orchids to ...… David Sechrest for coming up with the idea for Columbus: Celebrating Our History, from your committee, by Babs Olkiewicz
July 25th - - - Tuesday … all vendors, The Republic staff, residents of Columbus and all who came out to support and participate in the Columbus - Celebrating Our History event, from David Sechrest, the committee and Babs Olkiewicz.
July 27th - - - Thursday
Orchids to ....… the gals in the CHS Class of '55 lunch bunch, Junior Trail Blazers and other horse people, Babs Olkiewicz, Dave Sechrest and Historic Columbus committee, Richard Bray and Charlie Snyder, for making my visit to Columbus truly a trip down memory lane, from Nic Stevens. ( I know this is Nanc Stevens but true to The Republic they sometimes misspell names in this column.)
I hope I have not missed anyone
I just wished those who are scanning this as a visitor would maybe get just a small glimpse on how hard the Planning Committee worked to provide a Day that ran very smoothly even with the hot and humid Indiana Weather.
Ricky.... I am with you. Hoping we both can help quite a bit more during the planning of the next one. I have heard lots of nice comments on your City Cemetery tour. I would suggest you contact the paper or the Senior Center at least when you plan an evening tour or when it cools down. I know a lot of people would be interested in doing it when the weather is cooler.
Blessings to all who worked so very hard... Looking forward to the next one !! Margo
