Hi everybody yeah I really am still around. Just had a brilliant idea. my neighbor owns the property where they will be dumping the blocks etc from Central School. If we could hang on to some then next year we could sell them. We could paint some with years maybe some of us graduated as an example. I am going to get some for decorating out front. Maybe put the address on one or whatever. They could be used for most anything. If we could get some one to haul them, I can store some. I don't think they would need anything special, just space. Just thinking ahead for next year.

Wonderful idea, Margie, know for a fact that would probably be a worthy item to sell, as our church out here did just that when the new church was built. They sold 'them' as doorstops, with some of the Sunday School classes doing some of the decorating. Some were sold just plain. See ya'll soon. Nanc

Wow Margie !! What great info !
I have already had several requests from out of town classmates wanting a brick or at least some memory of CHS!! This would be a great fundraiser for us as I have not heard of anybody wanting these precious blocks.
May I ask does anybody have any idea what is entailed in cleaning them up? I've never done it before and I'm sure it might be a labor intensive project.
NEWS FLASH ~ ~ Ricky Berkey has started a folder about our EVENT on The Republic's Sound Off web site . Thanks Ricky !! I just added a little more info to it. So far we have had 32 hits in only two days...Not too bad . It is a little trickier to browse for topics of interest. It makes me appreciate the way our revered webmaster Dave has set ours up! KUDOS to You Dave for a job well done !!
Ricky and I both posted info concerning this web site and hopefully the readers will also browse through ours.

hey Margo
We could just furnish the blocks. If they wanted a special treatment of any kind then that would be up to them.

My thanks, also, to Ricky and Margo, as well as Babs for 'advertising' the 'event' on April 14th, in The Republic. As I read through 'Sound Off,' a thought came to mind...........With the change of location to The Commons, having perhaps a tad easier access than Donner Park, as well as 'the season of the year' change, what a wonderful opportunity to see to it that some of the 'oldtimers' in town get a chance to attend. I urge 'some of us youngsters,' to make an effort to bring a parent, a grandparent, or an elderly family member to the 'event.' Might also be an opportunity to be of service to an 'oldtimer,' residing in an assisted living facility, by offering to take them to the event. It is all about 'memories and history,' and a 'grass roots' look at Columbus past, and what a contribution it would be to have some of these folks at the 'event.' To hear 'the stories' that these folks have in their memory banks could be as enriching as the guest speakers and the displays. Yes, the 'event' is a well organized affair put together for the community to explore Columbus history. How much fun it would be to be a part of a impromptu conversation with an elder member of the community, think about it, and be a part of adding a special 'something' to the day. Paige, my eldest daughter, and I are looking forward to seeing you all at the Commons on April 14th. Gosh, a tad of humor here------perhaps Paige is bringing her aging mom to the event! In reality, the story goes thusly, upon my return from last year's event, Paige said------"Mom, you had just way, way, too, too much fun in Columbus, I want to go to the next event." Nanc 'n Paige

Great News from My Standpoint!!!!!!
Dear Richard & David & all Members:
My wife and I talked today and we have determined to come to the Columbus Historical Celebration April 14th. We will stay in the Columbus area for a few days. After, we go to the celebration on Saturday, then we would depart the next day to other adventures.
We are looking forward to the agenda that Rickey put under the Columbus Republic "Sound Off" pages. That was well written and very informative and should help draw more folks to the celebration.
So, now we will have members from the East Coast through the mid-states all the way to the West Coast. Now, that is coverage and good attraction history, for the celebration. Well, we are excited to be able to come to the event and see and meet others.
Cheers, Bob & Carol (Historical board name RER)

Margo:
Just this one 5th Street Gang member will be coming. Brother won't be coming.
As far as coming by the Commons Friday night we will try to do that if possible. We will be visiting other folks locally too and sometimes we don't have control over all the times, but we will try.

How terrific that we have visitors coming to our 2nd annual event from California and now South Carolina as well! :-) Not that I should call either Nancy or Bob "visitors" but they are traveling a long way to come to our event.
What is that ole saying "you can take the boy (or girl) out of the country but you can't take the country out of him (or her)?" It seems that is just the perfect saying for these two individuals. A person may move or live all over, but home is always home. I felt it too and since returning to Columbus I've never been happier.
Welcome to all and lets hope we have a few "surprise visitors" as well. :-)

Love your road map, Bob. It is better than what we now get from AAA, for sure. Very clever.
See you plan on having a tenderloin while you are here too! :-)

Someone, don't know who, has gotten our "event" into the REMC monthly bulletin. So even though it is not a huge notice, this will be read by a lot of REMC customers in the next few days.
Way to go, whoever did this for us!!! Thanks a million. We will take all the free publicity we can get.

Thanks Babs..Have not seen it yet. Need to stop by their office and get a copy since I am now a Duke Energy customer. A notice should also be in the April issue of the Columbus Arts Council Newsletter ~ I'm hoping. Thanks to Lynn Bigley and our own Michele. I sent in a revision as some of the info was incorrect..hope it made it in time.
Diane Doup is to post one in the Lincoln Central Neighborhood Family Center newsletter also.
She was very complimentary when she saw our poster I dropped off to her. They are sponsoring an Auto Clinic the same day and did not feel they could do a display table also. She said to be sure and let her know next year.

3rd ST. Bridge takes you out of town ~ ~ unless you were planning on driving into a LOT OF TRAFFIC !! Would not wish for you to get a ticket first thing ! However I think we would all come up with the money to bail your Wife Carol out of Jail !! Giggle Giggle.. Sorry to hear that "Bro" can't make the trip. We will miss him for sure...Grandma Margo

Most everyone that frequents these message boards are aware that I am 'into stories,' when it comes to memories, and always attempting to verify the ones that I have heard over time. My dad, at age 14, about 1924, journeyed by car with his Stevens aunts from Martinsville to Yellowstone National Park. Now that was quite an experience, and one that my dad frequently referenced as I was growing up. To date, I have found letters that my dad wrote to his mom, detailing his trip. One of these aunties was head of the English department at the Martinsville High School, and I can just picture her sitting my dad down and insisting that he write home frequently. Additionally, I have his photograph book documenting this excursion, beautifully lettered in white on the black pages. Many is the time that I have heard my dad reference 'The Blue Book.' Altho' I have never seen one, it seems that this was the 'road map' that they used on this trip. From Columbus to the Chicago area the roads were really not too bad, and fairly well marked according to 'the tale.' From there-----------to Yellowstone, no longer did they encounter many paved roads. 'The Blue Book' apparently did NOT have an actual road map as we would know it. Instead it contained a verbal account of the directions to a given destination. Such as: Go east on the gravel road out of 'MainTown,' go to the fork in the road where there is a barn, usually with a black and white cow standing under a big tree, and bear left. www.ianbyrne.free-online.co.uk/gulfdate.htmAnother link with examples of 'the directions.' maps.lib.msu.edu/miroadmaps/bluebook_route_sm.htmWith that said, not to be outdone by 'creative Bob Records' and his planned trip to Columbus to attend the Historic Columbus celebration on April 14th at the Commons, I hereby submit 'Nanc and Paige's Blue Book 2007,' account of our upcoming journey to this event. 2007 Blue Book 'directions' for Nanc 'n Paige -Depart home in Orange County, CA late on the evening of April 10, begin journey to the Ontario Airport, this late departure will avoid most freeway traffic -Use curb side baggage check in, proceed to the Security Check -Go through Security Check in stocking feet, and pray you can get through without any delay -Proceed to boarding area prepared to be bored, with book and carry on backpack in hand -Sit in uncomfortable seats until boarding instructions are given after midnight on April 11 -Board plane eventually and hopefully leave the ground in a timely manner -Try to read oneself to sleep, not likely, as stimulating coffee will probably be served, expect NO food -Arrive Houston in early AM -Seek a rest room and a Starbucks, find appropriate gate, and wait for next leg of this journey -Board plane when called, repeat as previously noted -Arrive Indianapolis before noon on April 11 -Claim luggage, clearly ID same with odd colored ribbons to expedite this procedure -Locate Hertz Rent-a-Car, complete paper work -Board shuttle to pick up car at destination away from the airport proper -Make way to highway headed for Columbus IN, keeping fingers crossed may be of help in this -Stop in Franklin to visit with uncle who resides at the Masonic Home, the road to his residence is across the street from a farm on the edge of town, and easily missed -Proceed to Columbus and check in at hotel and begin our exploring, as with DST it will still be daylight -Thursday and Friday verify 'stories' at the public library and the historical society, and explore the town including visits with friends -Friday night join others at the Commons to set up for the event - Adjourn from there to the downtown Dairy Queen to visit and chat, hope that many can join us about 8:30 PM on Friday- SATURDAY, APRIL 14-----------SEE YOU ALL AT THE CELEBRATION AT THE COMMONS Nanc 'n Paige

Great travel plans for you and Paige; Nanc. I'm just a little suprised you do not need another restroom break after the Starbucks in Houston !! LOL
Just wanted to let you and Bob know that John Rondot has a collection of state maps. He is trying to collect maps made in every state before any of the interstates were built. Anyone going flea market shopping might keep their eye out for any of these. I'm sure he would be pleased to add to his collection.
