Great photos, George, of the fairgrounds, referencing reply # 25, I have to ask, being long gone from the area, what happened to the Caldwell Mansion, and when did it, sort of, 'disappear' from the scene? As in this photo, in my mind, it no longer existed. Am I close? Are you ready to talk, talk, talk, my brain is in overdrive tonight? I have so many unanswered questions in my head. See ya'. Manana!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have a great evening. Nanc

Hi Nanc, the old Caldwell place has been gone for several years now, there is a bank on that corner now. It has been a tea room, used for awhile by the First Christian Church, and be for it's end was a apartment house. It was another Columbus landmark that should have been saved. I'm looking forward to meeting you and talking Columbus history, David has put a lot into this, along with the other members, it should be a great event. Will see you Thursday at the meeting, George

my cousin had stabled a couple of his horses at the fair grounds after it closed and was used as a boarding stable in the70's i think any way one or more of the barns caught fire killing his horses and a few others i know that is another reason the place was removed. there was always questions about how that fire got started.

Thank you Star for your memory ! Please consider joining our membership ( it's free) and placing other memories in the different folders. Myself I best remember the fairgrounds as my first "encounter" with a girlie show ! My dad would take us 4 girls around the midway and allow us one ride or game. As we passed this location he told us to keep our eyes covered ( which of course made us peek for sure ) and this was my first exposure to " Adult Entertainment" ! Of course this did not drown out the Barker's Voice which made us even more curious. I'm sure it would be considered harmless and tame today with the exposure our grandchildren are receiving from TV.... magazines....and " health Education " books at the library.

I lived just down the street on Caldwell and Dad and I would walk up to the races. I loved the smell of the alcohol fuel and the dust. I remember seeing Francis Overstreet driving an old Ford Falcon ranchero around town, never saw his Caddy. He would wear regular clothes and work the beer stand during races drawing beers for the customers! I remember thinking "this guy's a town millionaire"! My friends and I would also ride our mini-bikes around the track when no one was around during the days of summer break. Sometimes we kids would go around to the back of the horse barns on race nights and climb up on the roof and watch the races for free. We'd get "peppered" by the dirt marbles as the cars rounded the turns. OH, what fun!! Those were the true "Glory Days of Summer"

Hi Lyn and welcome!
Through the kindness of Norman Morris, I have a few pictures taken at the 25th St. Fairgrounds. The date on the pictures run from March 1981 through October 1981 (some of the pictures are posted on the Historic Columbus Indiana website, not the message board).
I don't know if the fairgrounds was still used at late as 1981. Something tells me it wasn't, but I didn't live in Columbus then and I could be very wrong in that assumption.
I also have pictures of the construction of Fair Oaks Mall. One picture is nothing but the workers preparing the land. The date of that picture is November, 1989.
FYI, in the World War II Thread, I posted a picture of Francis Overstreet, who owned the fairgrounds property.
For some reason, I was thinking that the 25th St. Fairgrounds quit operations in the mid to late 1970's, but don't take that as "gospel."
I do remember going to carnivals and fairs at the 25th Street Fairgrounds when I was in high school: 1967-1970. There were also fairs being held at the 4-H fairgrounds during that time, too. Seems to me that fairs were summertime events a the 4-H Fairgounds and Fall events at 25th Street(?)
Hope some of this info helps...

David,
If I remember correctly the last county fair at the 25th St. Fair Grounds was in 1956. I attended the 4-H fair in 1957 at the new location at state roads 11 and 58 and as I remember it rained the whole week, I remember having a date one night down there and my car got stuck in the mud coming out........well, that dose happen.
Beginning in 1957 Mr. Overstreet held what was called a racing caravel at the 25th St. Fair Grounds for a few years.
Thanks for the great pictures you posted, I am sorry that I can not ID any of the people in those pictures.

Horse Stables & Barns Year 1956I remember some folks maintained their horses at the various barns at the old long gone 25th Street Fair Grounds. Here is a 1956 picture from the CHS Log enlarged. It shows two riders at those facilities of long ago: Picture Info: Page 45 in the 1956 Log has the following ID. "After school Marty Foster and Mickey Lovelace hurried to the fairgrounds to ride their horses." Special thanks to Richard for finding the picture details and names.
