Having spend most of my high school years in So. Cal, this question really never came up in my mind---------the drive in restaurants, the ones complete with car hops, were open year round in my youth out here. Today, Dec. 20, 2008, while out 'pulling together some loose ends for Christmas, we stopped at the 'Zonic Drive In,' an establishment that has been in town/Fullerton, CA, for a number of years, and really only fairly recently seemed to be a thriving business---------While chomping on a burger and fries---order taken and delivered by a car hop-----we got to 'questioning our memories..............Was the A & W Root Beer drive in on 25th Street open year round--------or was it closed during the winter months......... I suppose I could pose the same question about the Dairy Queen on 25th St., as well. Sort of sticks in my brain that perhaps the Bob-o-Link, Junior (I believe it was called) and that being the drive in restaurant part, was open during the winter months. Input, anyone? Nanc

I think both the root beer stand and the Dairy Queen closed for the winter. In fact, I know the Dairy Queen did as it was to this very place on closing night that my grandmother and grandfather went that night when he was hit and killed across the street from the DQ. When my grandmother picked him up from his business she requested they get "one final cone" before the closing and then as he returned to his car, he was struck and killed by a reckless speeding teenager driving East on 25th Street.

Nanc & Babs:
During my time in Columbus Becker's Root Beer and the Dairy Queen on 25th Street closed in the winter months. I remember the owner of the Dairy Queen told me once he vacationed in Florida in the winter.
Talking about curb service here on the East Coast and southern states, they have fast food places called Sonic. The young girls that are car hops wear roller skates to deliver the food to your car. Interesting concept but a little dangerous at any age.

And yes, we were at 'Sonic/Zonic,' not sure of the spelling, yesterday, and the car hops were on skates, too!!!!!!! Nanc

When I was in high school and especially my 1969/1970 years of cruising, Becker's was open all year. They didn't close up during the winter months. I specifically remember it being bone chilling cold outside and sitting in a car at Becker's.
I think the Dairy Queen on 25th Street closed for the winter months, tho...

I must be the elder citizen of this group. I worked at the A&W when it first opened. Thirty cents an hour and all your tips. The drive was not paved at that time, as I recall. We had to get to work on our own but Bill Becker took us gals home at closing time.
I did not work there for a long time. I got another job that paid ninety cents an hour!!
Ahh, the fifties. A golden age.

? 56 or 57 worked thru summer at Becker's. One of my Ex-girls was a car hop. Great gal and was excellent at her job. Remember Bill talking about his flying career. In B-29's if am recalling properly. Recall we could have an A&W and a dog per shift. And, all the popcorn we could eat.
