In this thread, my hope is that this list will generate memories from some of these schools. At this thread is added, we have thirty plus schools in the Schools we attended group on the home page.
The source of this information was, History of Bartholomew County Indiana Volume II, published by the Bartholomew County Historical Society. It appears that this information was generated from 1879 Township Plat Maps.

In 1873, with a new state law, the State of Indiana created an Office of Superintendent of Schools and a Board of Education for each county. The superintendent was selected by all of the trustees. The Superintendent and Trustees were members of the Board of Education. The township trustee and advisory board were responsible for the buildings and the quality education in the township they served.
In 1888 around one hundred, schools were in the fourteen townships of Bartholomew County, Indiana. These Brick and Frame buildings were, in most cases, one-room schools. Listed below are one-hundred and one of those school locations.
Clay Township Schools:
The first school in Clay Township was in an unused log cabin across from the Sand Hill Church. Joseph Hart, Revolutionary War Veteran and founder of the church, served as a teacher in that first school.
Trotter-Keesling School #1 – was located at the southeast corner of Road 650 East and Road 300 North.
Meier-Hull School #2 – was located at Road 500 East south of Road 250 North Intersection.
Bonnell School #3 – was located on the north side of Road 250 North east of Road 350 East.
Beech Grove School #4 – was located at Road 50 North (Hartsville Pike) at the northeast corner of Road 425 East.
Petersville School #5 – was located on old SR 46, now East Twenty-fifth Street, west of Road 500 East. NOTE: This school location wasn’t on the 1879 map, however historians reported this was the location of School #5.
Trinity School #6 – was located on Road 650 East north of Road 50 North.
Clifty Township Schools:
Anderson School #1 – was east of Newbern on land farmed by J. Anderson. When it closed in 1914, some of the building materials were used to add a second floor to the new brick Newbern School which was located on Road 850 East south of Newbern on land sold by John M. and Minerva Bayh for $150.00.
Dark Corner School #2 – was located in the southeastern part of Clifty Township.
Boyer School #3 – near the farm of D. S. Boyer south of Newbern.
School #4 – was on the crest of a hill at the north edge of Newbern before being moved down the hill and across the creek. This building at this location was used as a high school before becoming the town hall.
Buck Branch School #5 – was north of Newbern.
Middle Fork School #6, was also known as the Isgrigg School and was located Southwest of Hartsville.
Columbus Township Schools:
Talley-Cox-Foster School #1 – was northeast of Columbus near those landowners.
Crump-Bonnell School #2 – was located north of Columbus in the center of Section 7 on J. S. Crump land.
Schatzmeier School #3 – was located northwest of Columbus, south of Lowell Road on the east side of Road 200 West on J. W. Cater’s land.
Wright School #4 – was West of Columbus, near the southern boundary of Section 21, on the Driftwood Valley Turnpike on property of Dr. J. F. Wright. (Note: the Driftwood Valley Turnpike was built by Joseph I. Irwin).
Mt. Pleasant School #5 – was located on the Carr Hill Road, one-half mile west of Road 300 West on land owned W. A. Abbett.
Wagner School #6 – was on the southeast corner of Road 200 South and Road 150 West. The school was built on the property of J. Godfrey with the Wagner property being across the road!
East Columbus #7 – The original East Columbus School was located on Lot 59, at the angle of Burnsville Pike (later SR 7, now SR 46 and known as State Street) and Gladstone Avenue. The building at that location was closed after being damaged by fire and a two-story building was opened at State and Pence. A second building was built in 1928. That building is used by Bartholomew County today.
Central School #8 – A six room building was built at Seventh and Pearl Streets in 1859.
Brush Creek School #9 – was located on the southeast corner of the township on land owned br F. Dinkins.
Clifty School #10 – at the intersection of Road 300 East and Road 150 South. Today that is the location of the Columbus Grange.
Quick School #11 – was north of Columbus on River Road about a mile north of Rocky Ford Road on land owned by J. M. Quick.
Flat Rock Township:
Big Woods School #1 – was near the southwest corner of Road 575 East and 900 North.
Andrews School #2 – was on Road 900 North west of Road 425 East.
St. Louis Crossing School #3 – was at the southwest corner of Road 800 North and Road 350 East intersection.
Hawpatch School # 4 – was located Road 200 East and Road 700 North just north of Hawpatch Baptist Church. Hawpatch was also referred to as Bryant College School.
Island Creek School #5 – was on the south side of Roade 700 North west of Road 525 East in Section 24.
Frog Pond #6, was also known as Linke School, was on the west side of Road 350 East north of Road 600 North.
Clifford School #7 – was on the northwest corner of Main Street (550 North) and Road 250 East.
Quick-Butz-Newsom School #8 – at the northwest corner of Road 550North and Road 100 East. The number 8 school was known as all of those names over the years.
Steenbarger School #9 – was located on Road 450 North one-half mile east of Road 500 East.
School #10 – was on the south side of Road 450 North west of Road 500 East on property owned by W. O. Lambert. A new school #10, was located north of the first School #10, on property Lorts Family property. This second school #10 was also known as the Lorts and Beech Grove School.
German Township Schools:
German Township was among the first townships to build brick schoolhouses.
Lovers Lane School #1 – was located at the northwest corner of Road 900 North and Road 250 West.
Taylorsville School #2 – this building was located on the south side of the Tannehill Road. In 1881 a new building was built in the Northeastern part of Taylorsville. A January 3, 1903 fire destroyed this building and a new larger four room building was finished at this location in 1904.
Schuder School #3 – was on Road 550 North about on half mile east of US 31.
Steenbarger School #4 – was located on Road 700 North one half mile east of Road 50 West.
Heck School #5 – was at the southeast corner of Base Line Road and Road 950 North.
NO SCHOOL NUMBER 6 WAS LISTED IN 1879
Ensley School #7 – was located on the north side of Road 950 North west of Road 175 East.
Harrison Township Schools:
Hoover School #1 – was located at the southwest corner of Road 550 West (Coffman Road) and Road 225 South.
Dipper School #2 – was on the north side of Road 100 South, a short distance east of Road 525 West. (Road 100 South also known as, Youth Camp Road, Two Mile House Road and later as Goeller Boulevard).
Lawlis School #3 – on the south side of Road 150 North one half mile west of Road 500 West (Mauxferry Road).
Owl Hollow School #4 – was on the south side of SR 46. It burned early in the 1920's and was not rebuilt.
Central School #5 – was on Old SR 46 east of Road 650 West. (Today, Old SR 46 is Base Line Road).
South Bethany School #6 – was on the north side of Road 170 South east of Road 825 West.
Perry School #7 – was located on the south side of Road 150 North (Georgetown Road) three-quarters of a mile west of Road 700 West.
For thirty-five years, Harrison Township also had a German Lutheran School, which was a branch of St. Peter’s Church in Columbus and was located on the north side of 525 West north of Road 100 South. This school opened in 1877 and was used to 1912.
Hawcreek Township Schools:
Fletcher School #1 – was located on the southwest corner of Road 950 North and Road 1075 East in Section 2.
Hawcreek School #2 – was on the southeast corner of Road 900 East and Road 900 North.
Simmons School #3 – was located on the south side of Road 900 North one-half mile west of SR 9.
Solomon School #4 – was on the east side of Road 670 East one-third mile north of Road 700 North.
Fishel School #5 – was on the west side of Road 900 East south of Road 750 North.
Possum Glory School #6 – was on the south side of Road 700 North one-half mile east of Road 1050 East.
Hartsville School #7 – was located in Hartsville.
Plessinger School #8 – was on the on the northwest corner of Road 100 East and Road 500 North in Section 27.
Clouse School #9 – was also known as the Patterson School on the west side of Road 700 East one-fourth mile south os Road 600 North.
Hope School #10 – was located in the town of Hope, Indiana.
Duck Creek School #11 – was located on the north side of Road 450 North three-quarters of a mile east of State Road 9, west of the United Brethren Church. That school was also known as Shiloh, Powell and Handley Schools.
Trotter School #12 – was on the west side of Road 900 East at Road 620 North.
Big Foot School #13 – was on the south side of Road 800 North between Roads 1050 and 1075 East. This school was also known as The Lambert School.
Jackson Township Schools:
School #1 – was in Waymansville on Main Street (State Road #58) on Lot #10.
Sutherland School #2 – On State Road 58 near Road 1050 South which is southwest of Waymansville.
Dettmer School #3 – on the west side of Road 500 West south of Road 930 South.
Mt. Healthy School #4 – off Road 800 South west of State Road 58.
Spray School # 5 – was on Road 420 South one-half mile south of Road 700 South.
Nineveh Township Schools:
Haven’t you heard of Nineveh Township? Nineveh Township was dissolved when Camp Atterbury was formed during World War II.
Records School #1 – was on the Kansas-Edinburgh Road one and a half miles east of the village of Kansas in Section 6.
Stucker School #2 – was in Section 19.
Drybread School #3 – was west of Kansas in Section 2.
School # 4 – was in Section 14.
Nevill School # 5 – was near the Brown County line in Section 15.
Hog Bottom School #6 – Was in Section 16. This school was also known at The Renner School. A new Hog Bottom/Renner School was built near the original building in 1887.
Ohio Township Schools:
Schwenk School #1 – this school was also spelled Swank, was located on the north side of Road 400 South a quarter mile east of Road 550 West. It is believed that this school was built during the Civil War in 1864.
Sprague School #2 – was on the west side of Road 770 West at the intersection of Sprague Road south of Grandview Lake.
Gilmore School #3 – was on the side of Gilmore Hill east of Road 800 West, (the Beck’s Grove Road at Toad 590 South. After the Gilmore family moved from the area and the Romine family moved into the area, the school was also known as The Romine School.
Conner School #4 – also was named after a family in the neighborhood was located on the east side of Road 550 South, one-half mile east of State Road 58. This building was also built in 1864 during the Civil War.
Rockcreek Township Schools:
Purvis School #1 – was east of Burnsville on the northwest corner of Road 1100 East and Road 200 South.
Burnsville School #2 – was north of Burnsville, on the west side of Road 925 East at the top of the hill.
Moffatt School #3 – was located on the southwest corner of State Road 9 and Road 650 East in Section 6.
Mitchell School #4 – was on the south side of Road 400 South one-half mile west of Road 750 East in Section 18.
Rockcreek School #5 – was in Section 9, on the north side of Road 400 South at Road 900 East.
Beaver Swamp School #6 – was located at the southeast corner of Road 300 South and Road 1100 East in Section 13. The 1879 showed a swamp on the south side of the road east of the school.
Grammer School – was built in 1899 at a cost of $2,950.00 after Grammar was founded in 1890.
The Burnsville or Grammar Schools was used for a two-year High School. The building used was the school which had the lowest number of pupils that would attend that school year.
Sandcreek Township Schools:
Anderson School #1 – was on the south side of the Burnsville Pike (later State Road 7.
School #2 – was near Road 450 South and Road 250 East northwest of Elizabethtown.
School #3 – was in Elizabethtown at Second and High Streets.
Sandcreek Friends North School #4 – was in Section 27.
Sandcreek Friends South School #5 – was near the Azalia Friends Meeting House at the south edge of Azalia.
School #6 – was on the south side of Road 750 South east of Road 450 East in Section 36 east of Azalia.
Union Township Schools:
Haven’t you heard of Union Township? All of Union Township, except the northeast corner, was dissolved when Camp Atterbury was formed during World War II.
Bevis School #1 – was in the northeast corner of Section 32. This area was not taken when land was purchased for Camp Atterbury.
Precinct School # 2 – was in the northwestern part of Section 31.
Ohio Ridge School #3 – was in the lower part of Section 27.
Catherine’s Creek School #4 – was in the southwest corner of Section 2.
Union-Pyles School #5 – was in the southwest Section 6.
Lowell School #6 – was on a lane running south from Road 310 North west of Road 330 West.
Wayne Township Schools:
Walesboro School #1 – was on the southeast corner of Road 400 South and Road 50 West.
Waynesville School #2 – was on the east side of State Road 11 at Road 650 South and was a two story school.
Jonesville School #3 – was located on the northwest corner of State Road 11 at Road 950 South. The Jonesville School was also a two story building.
Eckelman School #4 – was on the south side of 950 South west of Road 200 West.
Kobbe School #5 – was on the east side of Road 200 West of Road 625 South.
Sweet Ireland School #6 – was on the east side of Road 300 West south of Road 350 South.
Price School #7 – was at the northwest corner of Road 950 South and Base Line Road.
Green Corner School #8 – was on Road 800 South east of Road 100 West.
